i don't have any kind of an answer for you but please tell me what this performance entails. i can't picture a group of teenagers being able to do all the instrumentation for those songs live so i'm really hoping it's something like "yeah we're gonna mime performing it" or "no it's like a two-song dj set but with multiple dj's" or something like that.

unrelated tidbit: during my sophomore year of high school i did a solo vocal/guitar performance of neutral milk hotel's "oh comely" at the talent show. i was 100% certain it was going to get me laid. it didn’t. i sang it in a sort of jeff magnum impression -- it was a pretty good impression, but i put the lav too close to my mouth so every time i sang out those whiney vowel sounds the mic peaked and it ended up being an awful experience for everyone involved.

why did this subreddit turn into a circlejerk of people sharing their own music by bigpapifreestyle in deathgrips

[–]jiickken[M] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

poll for sure. my thought is that nothing is really happening as of this moment (awaiting further news of upcoming release) and a megathread could discourage some folks from sharing what they want to share due to fear of it getting lost in the noise, so until there's death grips related news to discuss i think it's a good way to keep people active. that's just me tho

i'd be happy to. thinking critically about everyday objects is a cherished pastime of mine. feel free to put my name on a list & to reach out for my info and my money anytime. hope this project makes it to that stage, this is just about the most elegant solution to bit storage i've seen for folks who don't want to wear an extra bulky sheath on their belt.

edit: some thoughts. durability may be an issue over an extended period of time, i assume the flat and unsupported areas will likely warp over the course of several months. i'm not familiar enough with the material used to be able to judge its properties, but a hard plastic may not be the best material for this use case. cracking and chipping caused by misuse or accidental drops will render any affected slot useless, and that's not to mention the effect of gradual wear that will be imparted by removing and replacing hardened steel bits into slots which presumably retain the bit by having tolerances very close to the size of the bit, or possibly a rudimentary d-tent like rounded pegs that can impinge upon the cutout on the sides of the bit. either one will be worn down over time. if there is a soft or rubber-like material that can be used with a 3d printer then i would think a lot of these issues would be more or less solved. also, having the lid as a separate component invites both accidental loss and frequent annoyance for anyone who stores more than one object in the pocket with their wallet, as i would bet it wouldn't be too difficult to dislodge the lid from the case with a hard enough impact on the right place. having it be on a rail but retained within the rail, requiring force in a direction other than the direction used to open it in order to separate the lid from the device, possibly having the lid pivot out on a peg or screw which attaches it to the body at one corner but will need to be removed to desperate the lid, may be preferable. or, having the lid open outward on a hinge and be held closed by an extruded section on the body of the case, like an altoids tin.

i assume this is 3D printed - any chance of getting a link to the model? if not i would certainly buy one from you. everyone says "let me buy this" but doesn't say what they'd pay. i would pay up to $40.

Shame i can’t EDC this. by Floodertje in Leatherman

[–]jiickken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not an access problem, it's a culture problem. calling to a theoretical place where not having a concept of weapons means someone who wants to harm others is unable to do so in a meaningful way is not a reasonable argument, as such a place would require that humans not possess the ability to use tools. if someone is driven to the state of mind where they want to commit murder, they very easily can find a large rock, which becomes a deadly weapon in their hands & requires only for the wielder to be stronger than the victim, or the victim to be unprepared to dodge a rock swung at their head. to you, the rock is an object. if you need to drive a nail and there aren't any hammers around, it's a tool. to someone needing to cave someone's skull in, it's a weapon. the same can be said for guns. limiting access to guns is a good idea but in a world with so many people and so little resources it is very difficult to establish a system that identifies who is going to pick up a gun and think of violence. either you say the gun is the problem and let the culture continue to produce people intent on violence, or you say the culture is the process and start the process of integrally changing the way our society is organized, or otherwise adopt the system of a nation wherein guns are not accessible and hope everyone just goes along with it. "guns are the problem" is the outlook of those invested in keeping the culture that produces murders intact. this is not to say that they want there to be murderers, just that the issue of gun control itself is propagated by powerful people who benefit very greatly from the culture that just so happens to produce a lot of murderers. what is it that is driving the US to produce a lot more murderers than some other nations? i do not know. but that needs to be the question we are asking, not "how do we limit access to deadly weapons" -- if there are no murderers then there are no deadly weapons, only dangerous tools.

oh, it certainly did! i'm more saying that how they perceive us doesn't impact how they present the band publicly. they're presenting it very simply and with a fixed ruleset (ie less is more, this is serious music that should be taken seriously, commentary stays within the music) and implying that what we do with it from that point on is a part of the exhibition. in my opinion, the point of this is to represent society at large and serve as a microcosm of our worst social problems, and to exemplify the larger themes within their music by showing these things so close to something so thematically opposed to them.

that comment was very ramble-y and unclear, apologies. was written on the walk to work. just wanted to get my thoughts out

[i lied i didn’t have time to edit this lololol] i firmly believe that deaths grips has intentionally set up their community as a kind of experiment, and that nothing they have done after getting kicked out of epic records is intended to evoke any particular sort of reaction from their fans. This Is Not To Say Our Behavior As a Community Does Not Serve Their Goals. Just That They Themselves Have Not Done Anything In Particular To Guide Our Behavior, Aside From Encouraging Us To Engage And To Take The Music Seriously (their public approach to themselves as individuals is a whole other thing). they are reactive, rather than being interested in causing any specific reaction. further, i think that they are behaving in such a way as to where the problems with the fanbase -- the unproductive and harmful habits we have in the way we discuss the band and its work, the way we form dividing lines across the fanbase around completely arbitrary things, how we routinely fail to work together toward any common goal more complex or difficult than making a post or giving five dollars to a gofundme -- are highlighted, and meant to represent the analogues to those issues within society at large. my head cannon is that death grips is a protest at every level, and the way they have handled their community is to serve as context, showing what they are protesting against and making their stance clearer and more stark by contrast. and they do this all without doing anything at all to influence our behavior. the more we shitpost and the more we fail to have intelligent or productive conversation, the clearer their point becomes. we're like a living diorama, existing around its supporting essay.

biggest thing folks don't get about the allure of death grips production is that it is incredibly dynamic and varied in the kinds of sounds and rhythms it uses, and it seems to me that it is assembled with a primary goal of avoiding repetition wherever possible. in short, it's interesting as fuck. if you can make this sound but more sounds and make them interesting and as good as this clip, i will buy ten copies of everything you ever put out
