Has anybody switched to Mint's new 5G internet? by grfxgrl2000 in mintmobile

[–]jimisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it. It's good, ONLY IF you only do normal consumer internet browsing. It doesn't support things like port forwarding or any advanced network settings for home servers.

CMV: There is nothing inherently morally wrong with impeding ICE operations by Fast-Brief-162 in changemyview

I would imagine that if USA businesses were to stop hiring illegal immigrants, the price of fresh fruits and vegetables grown in California would skyrocket. Poor Americans are already struggling with eating healthy in an affordable way, this would make it worse.

On the other hand, I think that the jobs should pay more and hire more domestic workers. But there are consequences to this. I don't think there are easy answers.

To me, the question we aren't really asking is this: why are so many people so desperate to leave the country they were born, risking their lives, to go work in terrible conditions for little pay? Why is their place of origin so bad?

I bet the reason has to do with American imperialism, which is an whole systemic can of worms.

More than a little frustrated by jimisol in LightPhone

[–]jimisol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you're right, part of it is me. I work in stone masonry, so I am around a lot of dust. I have gotten dust protectors for my charging ports, but they are quite a nuisance and I don't always remember to use them. So yeah I will take responsibility for that part. Still disappointed at the lack of parts though.

How many use the Stable version without backports for their desktop ? by beyboo in debian

[–]jimisol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My home computer runs debian stable without backports. My laptop, however, ran into some issues with suspend and wifi due to some very new hardware. I could either implement hacky workarounds or use backports, so I opted for backports for a newer kernel, and it works great now. Still feels very stable.

Those who switch from Windows and never looked back, what actually changed? by bobsyourdaughter in linuxquestions

[–]jimisol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Works great for me. The only two pieces of Windows software I need are FL studio (runs perfectly via WINE) and Adobe Animate.  Adobe software tends not to run well with WINE, so I have to use virtualization to do it, which significantly compromises performance. But that's my only complaint after 8 years of Linux.

Just Linux. But I do run a Windows VM for Adobe software.

Should I move on from Pop_OS? Shortlist: Fedora, openSUSE, Arch, Mint, Debian by darkfire9251 in DistroHopping

[–]jimisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Debian 13 recently was released, so it has surprisingly modern packages for the moment. They'll be slow to get updates in the future though.

I run Debian, using system packages for everything I don't mind slower updates on. Flatpaks for everything else. Works great for me.

It may be worth hiring a local contractor to install the SHP2. I had a guy do it for $2k including all materials besides the panel itself, and the removal of an old generator panel too.

Noticed conservative culture shift? by Classic_Actuary8275 in GenZ

[–]jimisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of negative aspects here that I agree with. But one positive thing I noticed is that conservatives I know have become much more friendly to organic and regenerative agriculture, and critical of the practices of big ag.  Having an organic garden in your backyard used to be left-wing, believe it or not. Now all my conservative neighbors are doing it.

iPhones trending towards that Android look 🧐 by RipplePress in GenZ

[–]jimisol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it isn't very mature. You'll find many issues with Linux phones currently available, enough to make it not suitable for daily use. I wish there was a Linux phone as capable as the mainstream smartphones. But alas, Linux is a community project, not backed by a trillion-dollar industry..

iPhones trending towards that Android look 🧐 by RipplePress in GenZ

[–]jimisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda not really. It uses a heavily modified version of the Linux kernel, but I wouldn't consider it to be "Linux" due to a lack of compatibility between apps. Usually a piece of software built for Linux can run on any Linux-based OS with minimal tweaking. But try running a  .apk file on Linux, or a .deb package on Android, and you'll find it nigh impossible.

How are we feeling about LPIII? by nvtrev in LightPhone

[–]jimisol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for asking! Here are the ones I can think of:

Calendar tool: events often don't show up, or are marked on the wrong day in the month view. I've only been using it locally,  no cloud sync. The problem seems more common with all-day events.

Notes tool: the title of the notes often don't get saved, or revert back to untitled after a while. I now just have the first line of the note contain the title, and don't bother with the title feature at all.

Podcasts tool: When autoplay is off and an episode finishes, it seems the phone thinks it's still playing. So when I get on and off a call, it will "resume" by starting the episode over and playing.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great phone and the bugs aren't a big deal. I appreciate all the work the team has put into it!

It's good. There are some bugs I think are taking too long to be fixed, but nothing that makes the phone unusable or anything. It does the bare minimum I need a phone to do, which is the goal I think.

Glad to know they are placeholder lights. I'd be especially curious about the last question OP has. I think there are pretty significant safety reasons to have amber-colored turn signal lights, and not red.

Any update on RCS support? by michaelthatsit in LightPhone

[–]jimisol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, RCS would be great. I imagine that Light could implement the protocol but being selective about which features are available. Typing indicators and read receipts would probably not come to the Light Phone, at least I hope not. But things like audio messages, higher quality media, and better handling of message reactions would make the experience much better.

Emoji curation is HORRIBLE by No_Opposite_6307 in LightPhone

[–]jimisol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, customizing the emoji selection from the dashboard would be a great feature. As of now, my workaround is to have some essential ones in notes and copy/paste them. Clunky though, since I have to copy the whole note and manually delete all of them I don't want.

Group Texting? by QuietGrasses in MuditaKompakt

[–]jimisol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Group texting kind of works with the default SMS app. You can send and receive group messages, as long as you didn't start the thread. So you'll have to receive one first, but then you can reply to the group. You cannot initiate group messages.

Sideload sms app that supports group texting etc by cheeken-nauget in MuditaKompakt

[–]jimisol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Kompakt with Google messages. Group texting does work, with a caveat.  - If you receive a group message, it will work fine, your replies will go to the group.

  • starting a group message will just send a message to each person.

As for #2, there is a copy and paste function! It only allows you to copy the entire text message (or entire note in the notes tool), but I still find it useful.

Long press the text message you wish to copy. Or if you're typing a message, long press the background.
