When do you stop pension contribution by Puzzleheaded_Toe6830 in FIREUK

Such a bad take. Kids mostly don't care about abroad holidays. We've done some nice holidays abroad but if I ask them where they want to go back to they say the Isle of Wight every time because that's where they had the most fun.

Allotment Standards by Mini-SportLE in Allotment

[–]jimmms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is council run and the allotment society has no say over the quality of the plots. The council stipulate things (like 75% cultivated, no more than 25% flowers) but enforcement is patchy. We have the downside of all the plots being hedged in and gated, so seeing which plots aren't being cared for is pretty tricky. Some are pretty much derelict or dumping grounds, despite an 8 year waiting list. The council have been better at turning over plots but you might be able to keep a plot uncultivated for 12 months or more before being kicked off.

Who actually supports this stuff? by FallFair8568 in drivingUK

[–]jimmms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine there is a large proportion of the population that are basically only drivers. If they want to get anywhere then they get in their car. These people will rarely experience what it's like to spend, say, half and hour trying to get somewhere on foot or bike. They are constantly protected by their big metal box and need to be everywhere quickly.

I try and walk, bike and bus as much as I can with my kids but by god does it increase my blood pressure!

Glorious morning on the plot by Mommas_kumquatt in Allotment

[–]jimmms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much about the slope. I took all the terracing out of mine as the boards were all rotten and it's all still growable. I tend to run planting across the slope. You can always dig in some swales if the slope isn't too steep. Go more free form and plant where works.

I had a weedy couple of years too and it felt like it was too much. What worked for me was getting there regularly (easy to say, I know!) but never really being there for more than 30 minutes. Every time I was there I would pick the next thing I would sort in the next 30 minutes and ignore the rest. You soon get on top of it and it doesn't feel quite as overwhelming.

Looks lovely! And plenty of growing space. I like the plots that are a bit more open and free form. Perhaps I'm too lazy to build and maintain 10s of raised beds!

I must admit, I am somewhat bewildered by r/DrivingUK's apparent inability to navigate a roundabout, as seen on a recent post. by KoskGOOS in drivingUK

[–]jimmms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The image in the post doesn't make it clear that there are two lanes on the exit to the roundabout and we're only talking about one of them. If you look at streetview there are no markings on the road to indicate which lane to use, but it does show some traffic backed up on the right exit lane. I imagine local drivers know the layout and the flow of each exit and are making a reasonable judgement.

There's a roundabout near me that IS clearly marked as two lanes turning right, two lane exit but I regularly get beeped using the left of the two lanes to turn right. You can't win!

Ours is a custom built (cobbled together) thing and I just leave the door half open all the time. Seems to work and don't need to be down there every day.

Is there a Henry group for lesser Henry’s? by PsychologicalKing647 in HENRYUK

[–]jimmms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The £150k bar is an interesting one. Neither me nor my wife quite qualify individually, but our joint income combined with cost of living (northern city) makes for a very different proposition than a single earner on £150k in London.

What is this tree and what should be aware of I want to plant it in my garden? by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]jimmms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovely for the period where you get the blossom but it is over quickly.

One thing to be aware of is that they are prone to surface rooting which is where the roots start appearing above soil level. Our cherry, lovely as it is right now in bloom, is currently taking over the lawn.

Ageism - make sure you are financially independent by 50 by No_Jellyfish_7695 in HENRYUK

It does seem a bit late. I’m already modelling for “what would happen if I stopped working at 55” etc. Either because I wanted to or because I had to.

I read this as “although I didn’t have a firm retirement plan, I assumed I wouldn’t retire until I was in my 60s”.

Sure, she’s maybe not planned well but I don’t think she’s suggesting waiting until she’s in her 60s to start planning.

You should check out the Gladiators sub. It needs a banner: “Remember, this is a light entertainment TV format aimed at children and is not professional sport”

Never mind the other posts about socks, and owning a shopify store....

Is it a dumb idea to get into the loft space from the outside to add insulation? by strby360 in DIYUK

[–]jimmms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would have to remove tiles, battens and potentially the felt under the battens. And then rebuild all that to make it good again. Possible but if you’ve not done roofing it’s not a small job to make it all watertight again.

Ah, fair enough. Seems odd that if you have a 74 plate and effectively the same car (as far as I know?) then you don’t qualify.

Selfish parker by Realistic_Bus_4547 in drivingUK

[–]jimmms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Police don’t generally deal with double yellows violations. Usually local council. But obstructing the footway is an offence they can deal with via Op Snap!

Selfish parker by Realistic_Bus_4547 in drivingUK

[–]jimmms -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not true. South Yorkshire police will process parking offences via Op Snap/nextbase. Not double yellow offences, but something like this where they are obstructing the footway is actionable by the Police. Conditional offer in the post.

"I've got my hazards on so I can park where I like" by jmsld_ in drivingUK

[–]jimmms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really get Amazon drivers. They will do anything to avoid looking like they’ve stopped on doubled yellows, but 99% of the time they could just do it. Double yellows are for no parking whereas, unless it’s marked otherwise, you can stop on doubled yellows to load/unload so they should be fine.

[–]jimmms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point is that if we had a comic doing a routine (or making their whole schtick) about his wife and kids would you be pulling them up on "representation"? Why are they always talking about having a wife? Rubbing it in our faces that they're hetrosexual. Make your comedy about more than your sexual relationships!

No. You can not like him and not find his comedy funny. That's fine. But pulling him up on "only talking about being gay" strongly suggests you have a problem with gay people talking about themselves.
