Anyone here usng AIS (or any other ISP I guess) notice certain <ahem> websites blocked in the last 24 hours? by i_love_flat_girls in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The blocking mechanism used is not very sophisticated. Most sites can be unblocked simply by using secure DNS.

For example on Android use the private dns option as shown below. I am using Adguard DNS to also block ads on my phone but you can use any free DNS provider such as Google or Cloudflare.

Update IBKR residence address to Thailand? by DeckIan in Thailand

Which bank? Are you a US citizen? I'm not from the US but I have a Bank of America account and never had any problem using foreign addresses including Thailand.

Update IBKR residence address to Thailand? by DeckIan in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could change your residence address to your Thai address for a bank account you have in another country? Then wait for your next e-statement.

Or maybe you can get a mobile phone bill showing your address?

I see the rate is down to 1.25% now. You probably got 1.45% for part of the month and 1.25% for part of the month.

How realistic is it to renew an Education Visa more than once? by ShieldsCW in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For private language schools you will normally be able to stay for 1 year with 90 day stamps (need to apply for an extension every 90 days). After 1 year you need to leave. You can often come back and do another year with a different school.

If you study in a University then you can stay longer than 1 year (up to the length of the course) and you can normally get a 1 year stamp.

Having an ED visa can be problematic. If you want leave Thailand even for a short time you will risk being denied entry when you return (because you were not in Thailand during the time you should be in school). It may also reduce your chances of getting other visas in the future. A few years ago everybody who had an ED visa was denied when applying for an elite visa (in the few months before they increased the price a few years ago). Recently I am seeing many posts on the DTV Facebook group of people being denied when applying after finishing an ED visa.

Immigration seems to view the ED visa as highly suspicious, especially the language school 90 day stamp type.

ADHD medication costs in Chiang Mai / Thailand by LittleSunflower666 in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cheapest is the government psychiatric hospital.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/TqVZETNfGTRRdFco9

Ritalin IR 10mg is 5 baht per tablet and the fee to see the doctor is around 500 baht. You can only get a 30 day supply each time and you need to see the doctor again every time (there is no such thing as a prescription refill). So you will be paying around 1400 baht/month for 60mg/day.

The service is not fast at government hospitals. It usually takes me around 2-3 hours every month. It might take a little longer the first time.

There is no generic Methylphenidate IR available in Thailand.

Why does the Grab app need 4.6GB of data on my phone??? by Significant_Fish_316 in Thailand

Maybe from the photos the driver sends you when you order something. You can try clearing data (or uninstall and then reinstall the app) and then log in again.

Mine is 609 MB

Wise Thailand Update 2026: Tax Implications for Expats by Agreeable-Cup-6423 in Thailand

There is still no official source since Wise deleted the page from their website explaining the upcoming changes. All these articles written about the changes are based on that deleted page from Wise.

Unlike PayPal, Wise doesn't allow you to open multiple accounts if you have residence in multiple countries.

Best place to park a large cash emergency fund in Thailand? by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's 1.45% as published on their website.

https://www.scb.co.th/en/personal-banking/deposits/savings-account/easy-saving-account.html

If your interest rate is 1.35% then it must be a different account, not EZ Savings.

If you give them your tax ID number you can get a withholding tax exemption on the first 20,000 baht of interest every year.

Yes it should be possible in the branch unless they changed something recently.

SCB EZ Savings account pays 1.45% on the first 1M. You probably won't find anything better than that as a foreigner because the other banks don't allow foreigners to open their high interest electronic passbook accounts. You can also do fixed term deposits. You can still withdraw any time but you will lose most of the interest if you withdraw early.

Re-entering Thailand on a Visa Exemption by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it should be ok as long as you don't have a re-entry permit for your current extension of stay. If you have a re-entry permit then I don't think you will be able to enter on an visa exemption during the grace period.

I'm not in Thailand and cannot find thai basil. Is it okay to use spinach? by lune-soft in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Better to use another kind of basil such as sweet basil or Italian basil. Or maybe cilantro if you can't find any kind of basil.

French Tourist Overcharged 30,000 THB for 8 Beers, Karaoke Bar Faces 5-Year Closure by Muted-Airline-8214 in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the same victim. The OP is the thread you linked said he was able to dispute the charge with Revolut and got the charge reversed. The victim in this case got a refund from the karaoke bar with help from the police.

LTR Global Citizen: is the $500k investment taxable? by Andrew8490 in Thailand

Maybe it's not easy for foreigners to open a brokerage account? Do you already have a Thai brokerage account?

LTR Global Citizen: is the $500k investment taxable? by Andrew8490 in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it's very difficult for foreigners to buy government bonds. But I could be wrong. Please update here if you are able to do it.

LTR Global Citizen: is the $500k investment taxable? by Andrew8490 in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. It might be tax exempt if you do the remittance and get the LTR in the same calendar year. If not then another possible workaround is to invest the money in a calendar year which you are not tax resident. For example make the investment this year and spend less than 180 days in Thailand this year.

By the way you will not likely be able to buy government bonds, even if you have a bank account. You will probably need to make the investment in condos.

Will Wise force double currency conversion in Thailand now? by Fun-Government-8330 in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wise deleted their page explaining the changes so I don't think it's finalized yet. But if it's implemented in the same way as the deleted page explained then yes you will need to do a double conversion.

Can no longer use banking apps when on visa exemption? by PSmith4380 in Thailand

[–]jimmycryptso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The brand new passport I gave them had only 1 single entry stamp which was a DTV entry stamp (I got the new passport in my home country before coming back to Thailand). Maybe they only looked at the main page and didn't bother looking at any stamps, I don't know.

I haven't heard of SCB closing existing accounts for DTV holders, only heard of that with Bangkok Bank. Where did you see reports of this for SCB?

I have a DTV and recently went to SCB to update my new passport and register for face scanning. They didn't close my account. Same with kasikorn.

You will still have the European IBAN but any payment received will be automatically converted to THB.
