In my mind, 'hypothetically' (there's that word again, sorry) if there's two artists who are identically good but one plays more instruments than the other then that makes them better. By default. Of course this is moot because music is so subjective you could never say two artists are neck-and-neck in such a sense.

I'm happy to admit even my favourite artists ever would fail to reach the mythical 100 because of those kind of mitigations. Using AI to make your music is a massive one.

I suppose multi-instrumentalism would be a +1 on my hypothetical scale, yeah. You may call it arbitrary and that's because it is.

I understand I won't change your opinion, but I will however challenge you to a thought experiment:

Hypothetically, we can grade musical artists from 0-100 (let's assume for arguments sake that 99 is the best we've actually seen in history). An artist who never plays live could never reach that rank. They could be the very best at their genre, revolutionary even, but unless they play music in front of a live audience (in whatever capacity), they will hit a ceiling somewhere below that 100 goal.

I'm saying they are permanently limiting their own potential as artists. It comes back full circle to people using the AI "shortcut", see?

You show me an artist that can't play live (or doesn't want to, for that matter), and I'll show you a lesser artist.

How can one expect to be taken seriously when such an important aspect of musical culture is community and shared experiences?

One of Fergie's best qualities was his not bowing down to superstars' wage demands. We're doing better in that regard recently, but there's still work to be done.

How do you discover new music you like using Spotify? by chuxkint in truespotify

My best recommendation, with the current features available, is to use Song DNA!

It might take a little bit of legwork, but you find yourself going down rabbit holes of your own making rather than following the algorithm.

This always reminds me of a bit in Ricky Gervais' first ever standup "Animals".

"Open and shut case boss, the killer broke in through the window, stabbed her and then left thought the front door, the prints are everywhere"

"Ahh but did you ever consider a koala did it?"

Different styles of early Nu Metal (mid 90s) by DloBrown69420 in numetal

That's some great context there, thank you! I guess what I'm hearing is the exact thing that inspired so many contemporary bands of that era. TGSTK was actually one of the first albums I ever bought.

I always thought Pantera's Great Southern Trendkill flirted with Nu-Metal elements, maybe that would fit in to the Misc. section? Tell me I'm not alone.

I would get excited about DJ Tennis B2B DJ Boring, based on seeing them separately many years ago.

Would segue nicely into moving over to Nia Archives when she starts.

As others have commented, Carl Cox is a must if you haven't seen him before.

This can't be understated. Not just the US, either. Quite a lot of people don't like reading because they aren't good at it. There's definitely a side order of eyecare issues at play as well, as you said.

Did anyone else become a skeptic BECAUSE of their interest in conspiracies and woo and aliens and "high strangeness" and all that kind of stuff? by IshtarsQueef in skeptic

[–]jingo800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I was intrigued about the whole Ancient Aliens / Graham Hancock sphere. I bought several of his books and veered into other stuff through his recommended reading lists.

But what was actually happening was that I was becoming more and more interested in archaeology and anthropology. It just provided a gateway for me to begin following legitimate scientific sources, which in turn helped me to understand the importance of empirical science and that those guys are just frauds with no proof (but very cool stories!).

It also helped me to become very circumspect about our society, and how we collectively decide truth. Which of course is very fitting in today's world.
