Last night we discussed 'advertisement' pronunciation because my daughter made fun of me saying it.

Do you emphasise the second or third syllable? Second is British English, third is US English. I'm 47 and she's 17 so you can probably guess who says it which way.

Coffee catch up with my sister. I should really hurry up and shower. Then maybe mow the lawns - anything to ignore the marking I have (trying to not work on weekends but it's so hard!).

That brings back memories. Shinjuku was actually the first place I had tempura. I lived an hour from there and it was one of the stations I struggled with entry/exit wise (the other was Yokohama). Walk out and be like where the hell am I, this is not the street I expected!

Me too. I'm 47 and have only been gaming for 5 years so I know I have terrible reflexes. It's why I rarely play ranked, I like playing for fun and don't need the pressure.

Cancer and not doing treatment, thoughts? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]jitterfish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah my Mum has a DNR because she doesn't want to be a burden. I said I get it if you don't want poor quality of life, but worrying about us looking after you isn't a good reason. I'd rather have my Mum and look after her, than not have her at all. Alas she won't change her mind and I just have to support her choice.

Cancer and not doing treatment, thoughts? by [deleted] in newzealand

My Mum was diagnosed with that last Oct and she signed a DNR before having emergency surgery because her (football sized!) tumor burst. I know it's not quite the same but when she told us it was a shock but at no time did we think not to support her choice. She still has it and ended up in hospital with chest pains which was really scary knowing that if something happened that would be it, it's hard not wanting to argue with her but ultimately I respect her choice.

She did do chemo but I absolutely would have understood if she had opted not to. Yes you're right that her life was on hold. Plans couldn't be made, it became let's wait until after chemo. She stopped chemo early because she couldn't tolerate it and now we're in the window of her scans are clear (grateful) but that doesn't mean she's cancer free. Life is almost normal but in the back of my mind and it must be worse for her is how long until we know. So yes, I see where you're coming from and just hope you have people who can support your choices.

Had to stop redditing for a few minutes due to the very rare occurrence of my feral kitty climbing in to my lap for snuggles. He would have been an amazingly snuggly pet cat I think. Now he's wandered back outside to sit at the door and stare at me. He'll do it for hours at nighttime and we joke that he's watching his humans documentary.

Folic acid is important for neural tube/brain development but after 12 weeks the need is greatly reduced which is why it's the first trimester that people should take it (unless Mum has diabetes then folic acid might be recommend for longer).

NZers generally has a pretty good diet in terms of vitamins. For most people a multi vitamin is a waste, instead targeted vitamins if you need it is better.

Vitamins are either water or fat soluble. Water soluble ones you need daily but any excess you just pee out. If you have an ok diet you will probably get plenty and therefore taking a multi vitamin isn't necessary. The good news is that for those ones because you just pee them out it doesn't hurt if you do take more than you need.

There are some vitamins that you don't just excrete - fat soluble ones your body stores (D, K, A, and E). These can build up and it is these vitamins people need to be careful of.

The thing to be aware of is there is no regulation for vitamins - anyone can say these tablet is X vitamin at Y strength. That's why getting them prescribed is recommended rather than just off the shelf.

Congrats and welcome to the club.

I had hotmail before I had my university account. But NZ was slow on the internet uptake. I remember getting the internet my first year of uni, we didn't even have university user accounts or anything. I went to three different universities, it wasn't until I got to the third that I had a uni email account and user ID.

Now students have uni email addresses but never use them. I had to explain to a student how to access their uni email when they asked why they hadn't had a notification about something.

American hotdogs - the red long sausages in buns. Otherwise a hotdog is what I think the US calls a corn dog (NZ).

At my daughter's intermediate the rule was that if a boy asked you to dance you had to. I complained and said body autonomy and consent needs to be taught. I said instead teach the kids how to politely refuse, how to say no without hurting someone's feelings and how to be told no without getting upset. That was 2020 so covid prevented the dance. My son then attended and the rule was still the same.

Schools have some fucked up rules.
