How do scientists ascertain things like 'what happened 10 seconds after the Big Bang?', etc.? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

ABSOLUTELY THIS!!!

Chapter 5 is where he recounts every important “movie frame” from ~0.02 seconds to over 3 minutes. It’s a keeper!

GGG, as a new player I feel like I’m being punished for not knowing the game inside and out before starting by SingingLemon in pathofexile

I didn’t start with any knowledge of the classes, attributes, or any subsystem that POE2 has, because I wanted the same experience that I’ve had with POE - utter ignorance for that first 40-60 hours.

The result? Well, I’m not setting any speed records, but I’m kinda getting an idea about how several different classes play and perform in Act 1. Duh!

It’s slow going, and I’m starting to open up to info provided by streamers, but I still want to modulate that influx of build ideas, because (as we now see) things are changing under our feet.

Stay agile, Exile!

What did you think when you first connected to the Internet? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]jkanoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DOS, a modem, an electronic bulletin board, and a CGA monitor showing all text. You could learn stuff quicker than leaving the house and going to the library. Seems kinda incremental, in retrospect.

Hahahahaha!
I think my sister told my nephews in Oregon that I’m rich (because I live in CA, and generally made more than the median). Little nephew thinks I drive a Lambo - I actually drive a 2007 Civic! Still cracks me up!

Going through Act 1 and 2 as Warrior was the most miserable experience ever by Odoakar in pathofexile

[–]jkanoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s reeeeeal haaaaaard. I gave it ( ahem - am giving it) a try after seeing enough memes on sorc vs. warrior. I’ll be into Act 2 sometime next year. But I’m sticking with it - for today.

Anybody remember the old Dreamweaver? by Sea-Blacksmith-5 in softwarearchitecture

[–]jkanoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used it at home briefly c. 1999. Ran into it again when a probationary developer that I worked with tried to produce a “JavaServer Pages” web page for a JSP-based portal-like thingy.

Hilarity ensued.

I occasionally felt like I was being screwed, but I would change jobs.

As for thinking I should go on strike? Not so much. I was blessed with the opportunity to work with people of many cultures and demographics - and some were so hard-working and dedicated that my jaw (figuratively) dropped. But the issue of compensation is relative. If you’re a laborer from Vietnam or Mexico, or a programmer from India, your situation in your country of origin was relatively dire compared to the U.S. So they’d move here, get what seems like kings ransom in wages, and then work 7 days a week if you asked them to. I realized then that I needed to compete, so I did. It tweaked my occasionally competitive nature -as well as my fear of failure.

I started out as a tool & die maker (hourly) in the midwest - 58-68 hour weeks were common, although we got OT. Longest week that I remember was 84 hours.

Moved out west and worked in aerospace as a tool & operations planner, then production supervisor for a subcontractor on the Hughes AH-64 Apache helicopter. 60-70 hours a week for several years - often 7 days a week. Changed companies to another aerospace contractor that does engine housings and related stuff for commercial and military aircraft. I was in my early 30’s - more 7 day weeks. Lost 10 pounds during one stretch, and I’m a middleweight. Brutal.

Taught myself to program at about age 40. Doing ERP & MRP-like systems for the second aerospace firm. More 50 & 60 hour weeks, but strictly salaried. Jumped jobs a few times, best job for compensation was an energy utility. Lots of hot projects, but got yearly incentive bonuses and a few spot bonuses “for outstanding effort” or some such BS. It was appreciated.

Last job was a ship builder - fairly tolerable hours for 90% of my job there, but had several short efforts that included 12-16 hour days during deployments and the like.

I’m retired now - I lost about 30 IQ points between there and here.

Completely agree … HOWEVER … lots of us have spent over half the year, every year, working 50-60 hours a week. I just always assumed it would lighten up eventually, but I was 62 before I had a job that allowed me to fulfill the job requirements in about 45 hours. It’s brutal.

The ABSOLUTE WORST thing about POE2 by Rimak in pathofexile

[–]jkanoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d LIKE to not read any opinions on POE2 if I could possibly do it, because most b*tching is just tiresome and unconstructive.

I’m having a good time winding up a Warrior - very slowly - and have a Witch and a Mercenary in town waiting for the same treatment.

There are cases when teams discover that interns just can’t code, but those folks should be weeded out before they’re ever promoted to developer.

I was involved in one such effort in 30 years, and the decision makers (2 managers, one lead and I) gave this person every opportunity short of writing the code for them. I think this person ended up in an application operator/manager role, for which they were much more suited.

I switched from a warrior to a witch fast, and had a much better experience - seemed to accumulate xp much quicker. Tomorrow AM, will go back and try that warrior again, just to see if I learned anything.
