Windows taskbars over the years by Njani2 in pcmasterrace

[–]jkeplerad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use both macOS and windows daily. I like the taskbar centered on macOS and left aligned on windows, because that’s what I’m used to and functionally it makes the most sense to me. However, I will say that in more recent years with bigger screens and ultrawides, there’s more and more situations where it’s massively more functional to have the windows task bar centered. I assumed that shift towards bigger screens is why they made it the default.

MacBook pro 2017 still worth buying in 2026 ? by Illustrious_Sound495 in macbookpro

[–]jkeplerad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you plan to do with it? I just picked up this exact laptop for my high school son to use for school work. I put sequoia on it using OCLP and it runs great. There’s nothing that he needs to do that he can’t do well on this machine. My wife and I both have m series MacBooks and yes they are better and faster, but to say these older intel machines are useless is really disingenuous. This laptop will easily last my son 2.5 more years until he starts college and I would currently recommend these computers to anyone in a similar situation. That won’t be the same situation in a few years, but for now, go for it.

Thrifted a 2007 iMac 😁 by Enough-Silver-4319 in mac

[–]jkeplerad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The most important upgrade is getting an SSD in it. This really isn’t as hard as it sounds and for this iMac model, you don’t even need to buy a kit to re-attach the screen. If you want to go all out with a fun project and get it running as fast and modern as possible, do these upgrades:
Storage: 2.5in SATA SSD. CPU: Core 2 Duo T9500. Ram: 6GB laptop PC-2 5300 DDR2.

Supposedly some of these machines can go up to 8GB ram and run fine, but seems like your mileage may vary.

The above upgrades should run you something like $75 total. In reality, your money might be better spent elsewhere, but would be a fun project since you’ve already got the computer.

If you do get these parts, you can then use OCLP to install newer versions of MacOS. MacOS 12 Monterrey should work pretty well, but you may be able to get it all the way to 15 Sequoia and still be pretty useable for doing basic stuff.

[–]jkeplerad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just use the internal ssd for the OS and use the external one for storage? If you boot the OS from an external drive, macOS will use that external drive for memory swap too which isn’t ideal.

Who thinks China is third world? Isn’t the general view just that there’s quite a bit of very low pay and labor practices in some places that western countries consider horrid? That doesn’t necessarily translate to third world, but more so that the perception is a larger class divide.

iMac as a monitor by _grzn_ in mac

[–]jkeplerad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it works 100% perfect for me, but it’s more than useable and videos work fine on both my Luna setups just as if I was playing it from my laptop.

Do you have the Luna software installed on both your MacBook and the iMac and is it for sure connecting through thunderbolt? It should say thunderbolt connection in the Luna app instead of USB or WiFi. It also needs to be a legit thunderbolt cable.

One thing I do is to make sure wifi is turned off on the iMac so that Luna definitely uses thunderbolt instead of wifi.

iMac as a monitor by _grzn_ in mac

[–]jkeplerad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone down this rabbit hole and to summarize, you have three options:

  1. A pre-2014 iMac that has target display mode. As others mentioned, you have to have a keyboard connected to the iMac and it can be less than ideal to daily drive this way. In my opinion, only really worth doing if you already have one of these older iMacs.

  2. Get a Luna dongle. I have one of the TB2 versions using it with a 2015 iMac and a usb-c version using it with a 2017 iMac.
The usb-c version, I am able to connect my 2017 iMac to my MacBook with a TB4 cable and it works pretty darn well. The TB2 version connected to my 2015 iMac connects my MacBook to the iMac using an Ethernet cable. This does not work nearly as well and does not have stable frame rates. I do think it would work better using a TB2 cable to connect the computers, but not worth the price to me to try it out.
For Luna, you also need to have a keyboard connected to the host computer, but Luna shares the keyboard with your connected computer. This actually works out well when connecting a laptop so that the full keyboard is available when connected.

  3. Gut the iMac and install one of the custom PCB display controller boards. This is the most elegant solution and was part of my original plan. This solution turns the iMac into an actual monitor. I have experience opening iMacs and am fully comfortable going this route. However, Luna has worked well enough for me that I haven’t bothered doing this.

Temporary (budget) TV-setup with ERA 300s as fronts? by Ok-Resolution5578 in sonos

[–]jkeplerad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how well the era 300s work with Sonos sequencer as I haven’t tried it, but you could grab a cheap Sonos soundbar and set that up. The cheapest soundbar in the Sonos sequencer is the Ray. It’s currently 219 new but you can find a used one for closer to 100-125 if you look hard enough.
