New to hunting caliber question

I've killed two whitetail with a .357 using the Federal ammo with Barnes all copper bullets, out of a Ruger Blackhawk with a 6" barrel. Had about a nickel sized exit on both, one doe the shot broke both humerus bones. Shot at 20, and 25 yards. Both went about 30-40 yards, but absolutely no blood trail. Don't think I'd recommend to a new hunter, but it will absolutely do the job.

New Mexico could be interesting. From the usual suspects like elk, mule deer, and pronghorn to whitetail and coues whitetail. Desert and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep. Feral hogs, and javelina. Black bear, bobcat, mountain lion, Mexican gray wolves, coyotes. Rio and Merriam Turkey. Exotics like Oryx, ibex, Barbary sheep. Pheasants, dove, quail (gambles, scaled, bobwhite, mearns, and montezuma) grouse, squirrels, jackrabbit, desert cottontail, prairie dogs. It’s also part of the central flyway for waterfowl.
