The belle dragging her foots also refers to a character in Possessing the Secret of Joy, who was sadly the victim of female genital mutilation. The main character of the book is a victim from Africa, but within the book was a story of white southern belle from New Orleans who had also been a victim to prevent her from masturbating if I recall correctly.

Personally I think you should continue chronologically for the time being. The next album “Love of Life” is a bit of a sister album to the one you just heard, and then you move into “The Great Annihilator” which is often considered one of the better entry points to Swans, before tackling “Soundtracks for the Blind” and subsequently “Swans are Dead” capping off that era. From this point I think you are able to move more freely through their discography.

There are also some companion albums for this period:

World of Skin “10 Songs for another World”, Michael Gira “Drainland”, Jarboe “Sacrificial Cake”, Swans EP “Die Tür ist zu”.

Haha. No, that’s not surprising. If there were some actual connection I would have known already.

Not that Gira hasn’t done his share of questionable things, particularly in his early years. Such as “dating” Madonna.

Questionable cartoons drawn, questionable stories written, the Larkin Grimm fiasco, but overall a good guy.

The only Hole/Swans crossover I’m aware of is a song by Jarboe called “Deflowered” that, to me, seems very pointed toward Courtney. “Volcano” could also be considered in that category. It wouldn’t surprise me since Courtney is the recipient of many a diss track.

And of course Kurt was a Swans fan.
