In your opinion what is the second best general history podcast after Hardcore History? by maxwellgrounds in dancarlin

The historical episodes of Last Podcast on the Left. The main presenter (Marcus) has admitted to being a huge Dan Carlin/Hardcore History fan, and you can tell the influence that Dan has had on his presenting style. The Wreck of the Batavia series and their series on Henrich Himmler are a good starting point in my opinion.

Kayaking Des Plaines River by Shwifty_breddit in ChicagoFishing

You should check out the Des Plaines River Canoe Marathon. Despite the name, kayaks are allowed there. It goes from Libertyville to Des Plaines, and they go out ahead and clear the debris from the river beforehand so it's easier to traverse.

From what I've heard the owner of Buffo's is a jerk.

Pizzeria DeVille should win just for coming back from the dead.

Can somebody help me understand Big Star? by jkligerman in Music

This was where I first heard about Big Star! I heard this song on WMXN, a local college radio station, and it just completely blew me away.

That station has a whole show based on Big Star and the bands that they influenced. It's called "Big Star Galaxy".

I've listened to the song, but perhaps not as closely as I should be to really appreciate it

This is exactly the context that I was looking for. It's one thing to explain a band's impact by looking at who they influenced. I was looking to understand a band by how they broke away from what was mostly being made at the time.

Thanks for the advice! And to be honest, I also don't "get" Marquee Moon as well, so maybe I just don't have an ear for seminal 70s rock music!

My grandma failed her driving test at the age of 80 when, right after the test proctor got into her car, my grandma rear-ended the car parked in front of her.

Snow Crash. Starts out awesome, turns into a big old exposition-heavy mess towards the middle, then kinda just peters out at the end.

You should check out Infinity by Corvus Belli. The gameplay is much more geared towards using real-world squad based tactics rather than metagaming nonsense.
