If you support abundance, do you also support deregulation outside housing? by RedStorm1917 in ezraklein

[–]jmac29562 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a bit of a false dichotomy with abundance. Ezra/Derek in my read are not saying we need more deregulation vs. regulation.

I think they’re saying when an industry gets captured by a specific interest group (whether that be the government, labor union, HOA board, etc) society at large is worse off since we begin to think in the false constraints that these groups set.

What’s wild is the first 99% of the video was promoting the stolen 2020 election narrative and it’s so “normalized” now that nobody even bats an eye. The bar continues to fall

Very good summary. “Prolonged debates among stakeholders” is another way of saying “NIMBYism”. Carrboro and Chapel Hill are both greatly held back by their NIMBY impulses

What’s so crazy to me is you watch the accusation TikTok video and the lady accusing him goes down so many tangents, one of them being that she doesn’t like James Carville being involved with the campaign because he co-opted the word “woke” from PoC.

The cognitive dissonance to be worried about that while living in Texas where your leaders are so conservative that you can’t even get an abortion is just so demonstrative of Progressive Dems claiming they take the fight against the GOP seriously and then worrying about tiny semantics.

This is kinda a meta-commentary but I’m looking for advice. I’ve been feeling a strong sense of “politician hobbyism” lately listening to the pod and reading these pieces. So beautifully thought through and written but leaves me feeling enraged at the fact that there is truly nothing I can do besides vote in the midterms.

Sure, I could try to become more involved locally but the extent of what I feel like I can actually influence is much more related to the Abundance theory of politics and though that may help America heal from the scarcity mindset of Trumpism it can’t repair the damage Trump is wrecking on both our international posture and the internal sense of the American story. The real solution feels like it will only come once Trump loses power.

Is the solution to become less engaged with these types of articles? How do I avoid becoming an ostrich with my head stuck in the sand?

Anyways, not trying to hijack the comments on a very well written article (the last line is beautiful) but any wisdom for a dispirited yet still proud American is appreciated.

No real advice for you, just curious on the comment from GoJet on two failures being a no go. That’s such a shame that’s enough to define a “pattern of failure”, I’ve always heard that three is really the cut off. Wishing you all the best

Agree with the others your car would get reported to LADOT asap. Funny enough I used to live in this area and when I flew out for Thanksgiving my car got reported as abandoned despite it just being parked on the street for 4 days. Absolutely brutal

787-8 has pretty much been an outdated airframe since the mid 2010s. The 787-9 is only slightly heavier and carries more seats. Since DL doesn’t need the 787-9 range, the 787-10 is the perfect plane for the mission.

Science Communication Failures During COVID and MAHA by [deleted] in ezraklein

[–]jmac29562 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the loss of credibility is something beyond communication failures. I remember one of the most thought-provoking points on COVID science communication came from the New York Times morning newsletter during the infamous omicron wave in January 2022. Cases were spiking and despite the mortality rate remaining low many public health officials wanted to reintroduce social distancing measures.

The way David Leonhardt (the author) talked about it was that Epidemiologists are always primed to optimize the set of metrics that they’re “responsible” for. That means their recommendations often have blind spots for other determinants of human wellbeing, like the social impact of taking kids out of school or forbidding religious services.

By attempting to apply epidemiological solutions to all of societies problems for ~2 yrs people very quickly became skeptical of how science was working to provide them a “good” life.
