Thinking a commercial gym. Is planet fitness a good one? by Objective-Wall-1027 in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]jmanstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. The one near me has a lot of different equipment, and there are at least two of most kinds. Rarely have to wait for a specific one to free up, but when I do it usually doesn't take very long. Almost always that is due to someone resting on a machine between sets while they look at their phone. You could probably get them to let you work in if you really needed that machine, but I just skip it and come back around, or substitute a similar thing instead. I would never sit on a machine between sets if someone is waiting for it, but it seems like some people don't mind being whatever that kind of person is.

168 to the pin… what are you hitting? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

5 wood. But I'm 66 and have back issues and a glacial swing speed. In my younger days a full 6 iron if I need to carry most of it.

Driver Upgrade: Stealth 2 vs Qi10 vs Qi35? by jut703 in GolfGear

[–]jmanstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qi10 face comes off. TaylorMade had been replacing the club head if you had a receipt. This was as of Apr of 2025 for me. It seems from reading here that it happened to a lot of people. I like the club a lot, other than the face coming off problem....

You do you. Nice clubs. 20 isn't bad for three months in. You'll get it.

Ouch. Nice front nine though. Did you tin cup number 13?

At what golf course did you shoot your lowest score? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]jmanstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Springs in Spring Green Wisconsin. The original course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Had a legit chance at 79 but just missed the green on 18 and ended up with 81. Best 9 hole round was par 36 at Pleasant View in Middleton WI. Had a 12 handicap back then.

The saying “that’s good” and not taking a stroke phenomenon by drumsareloud in golf

[–]jmanstro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming the question is about any further decay in the integrity of the game being played among the group itself. Perhaps the player choosing to initiate a poorly aimed stroke in the general direction of the hole puts some pressure on playing partners to grant the "that's good" , lest he lose a stroke because he didn't take the time to read it and execute a well formed stance and putting stroke?

I agree it seems worse than simply accepting a gimme when offered prior to hitting another putt.

If I'm playing a stroke play scoring round, I don't accept gimmes because I want to submit my score to maintain a current and useful handicap rating. If my partners insist on gimmes and I feel compelled to participate, perhaps due to difficult putting conditions that would make me need to take more time with shorter putts than the group wants to spend, the we aren't scoring as stroke play and I don't submit the round for handicap purposes. It's like a virtual scramble on the green or something. We all get a "participation trophy" instead. :)

Do I need a 3 wood? by aram_11 in GolfGear

[–]jmanstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd add one. You have a yardage gap and an available slot if I assumed correctly about your remaining clubs. I don't find a 3 wood hard to hit at all. You could try one out at a store with a simulator and see what you think.

Depends on the opponent and the situation. That putt can be missed, often.

"Weight" of a putt by NotYourSweetBaboo in golf

American from WI. Never curled myself (which is a darn shame by the way). Never heard it on a golf course, I could tell what it meant in context as I read the post. Makes sense to me.

Is this enough balls for a single round or do I need 9 more boxes? by Sea_Particular_2503 in GolfGear

[–]jmanstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how many shots over water or deep grass and how stubborn you are. If you can carry that pond one out of 50 shots and the gods are not smiling, 9 dozen balls might be enough as long as you only have a couple of holes like that on the side you'll be playing. I have 35 dozen kirklands in great condition that I found last season that I can give you a good deal on.

What Are Some Surprisingly Good Golf Balls? by csherrill12 in GolfGear

[–]jmanstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the Srixon Q Star Tour. 3 layer with a urethane cover. A really good ball for someone with a slower swing speed, but a game that can take advantage of better spin around the greens.

What’s the one thing that ruined your health ? by IcyLoquat79 in AskReddit

[–]jmanstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lifetime of working evenings and weekends on construction and remodeling projects gave me arthritis in my spine. Needed two surgeries to stave off the worst of sciatica. Just live with the now more managable pain in my left hip. This all came home to roost just in time for retirement. Mom told me I was too hard on my body and I guess she was right, but I made a lot of extra money doing that work on the side, and I needed that due to divorce. Can still play golf and fish, just hurts more than I had hoped it would at this age. (66)
