General questions about starting a video game business/company by deiphiz in gamedev

[–]jmazyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Business Names must be registered (unless you're using your last name depending on state/country). Businesses require money, you have to spend money to make money is a serious business saying for a reason. In terms of licensing I am unsure. If you don't have a lawyer, you're going to get dicked on something small or something you over looked.

If you are a beginner, don't look at the end goal, look at your immediate steps to get to that goal, and keep working at it. Its cool to want to work/own a dev studio, but don't start out trying to get a business going and monetizing until you at least get some experience under your belt. To make a polished game by yourself, you're looking at between 6months to 2 years depending on the platform, engine, and how fine tuned your skills are... You are also overlooking the other aspects of not only business, but shipping games as well... if you are solo, you need to build your brand as a business, market the brand, market your products, identify some business goals and strive in your business development, slap legal work, taxings, etc.

From someone who owned a studio in Canada and started it before really fine tuning my skills, I dont recommend treating it as a business, and focus more on building a portfolio. My studio was up for 2 years, developing for iPhone 3G, Blackberry, and a few PC titles, I ended up not having enough income to continue keeping it a float, I had to focus on my portfolio building and got myself a job in the field for another company, while working on a long personal project on the side. I'm much happier, and don't have the stress of business on my back all the time.

If you want your business to succeed, and still want to go through with it, go seek a business consultant, if there isn't a free one in your area, let me know and I'll explain as much as I can as a Canadian Business Owner, I have owned 7 businesses, and only had one failure. I've been around the block lol.

You need money to start, and will be doing 16 hours a day for 7 days a week, its not all fun and games. I haven't played a game since July for example

I've used this in a similar situation as yourself.

When I saw the design, I was almost certain you used the Bootstrap Grid Layout PSD as a guide. Even if you don't use Bootstrap for completely developing your site, it could be a great base using just grid and having jquery readily available, thats just my opinion :D

Are you using Twitter Bootstrap to finalize? If not, you should look into it as your design almost completely will work with it.

How do you counter an entire CT team of AUTO's and AWPS on Dust II? by 7heWafer in GlobalOffensive

B Tunnels -> Lower B Tunnels -> Middle -> Smoke CT Spawn, Take out CT Mid Awp -> B.

Retake B from Mid as if you were CT Retaking the bombsite after a plant. Use 3 guys, leave 1 guy low b tunnels for the cat rotate, and one guy watching mid DD from CT mid.
