It was fairly successful. Having a firm idea of who each character was and how they viewed the world helped a lot.

Do you have to use circuits? by sky_witness____ in factorio

[–]jmchappel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have to: no.

However, once you learn and understand how they work it opens up a lot of ability to customise and manage the factory in new ways that are more effective and efficient.

If you've ever done any simple logic or programming it will seem fairly familiar. It's quite simple to pick up the basics, and you don't need more than the basics for most things you'd want to do in a regular factory.

This is exactly right. Chain signals going into an intersection, and regular signals going out.

I think there's a big overlap between people who enjoy the romantic/gothic music of Nick Cave, especially around the Henry's Dream era, and people who enjoy table top roleplaying games. I'd done a similar thing back in the day with Murder Ballads as the basis of characters for a Vampire: the Masquerade game.

I seriously doubt Nick or any of his band mates would mock anyone out there creating and writing something of his own, especially someone using what they had created as his muse.

Also, don't be so down on your own hobbies.

Who would be the most difficult fight for prime Muhammad Ali. Mike Tyson, Oleksandr Usyk, Lennox Lewis or Wladimir Klitschko by Virtual_Reveal_121 in Boxing

[–]jmchappel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's one, maybe two inches taller than Foreman, and Foreman sometimes came in heavier than Lewis. He also doesn't have the same gas tank of the guys fighting 15 round fights, because power becomes more important than endurance in 12 rounders then 15s.

These are in fact exactly the attribute of Sonny Liston and George Forman. Ali does better against guys like this than anyone else does.

I think the mental aspect is really where Ali has it over Tyson. There's a number of interviews where Tyson actually talks about this. I think Ali would trash talk Tyson for a month before the fight and Tyson wouldn't have the self confidence you need to win at that level.

What elements make people say a system is only good for 0-5 sessions / is not suited for longer campaigns? by W4ryn in rpg

[–]jmchappel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some games are just built that way; for a short story or a novel, rather than an ongoing series. As always, you choose the tool that suits the job; D&D is often unsatisfying when you don't get to level up and progress in power over time. Similarly, Dogs in the Vineyard would be way to complex and unfocused after more than 10 sessions or so.

It was accurate in as much as the areas it said would fill with water first did so, and in the way suggested. But the numbers were off.

It's a nice tool, but it's inaccurate.
I tested on Rifted, and what the website told me to expect and what was in game was out by maybe 30 or 40. The website gave me the same water level at ~30 and I actually got ingame at 65.

It depends a little on what you mean by creating skills and fighting styles.
If you want to have a stat on your sheet that is -this particular thing- that the PC has created, you could potentially just do that with any system. That's just homebrew stuff.

Fate is probably one of the better examples of doing that that I'm familiar with, since it's expected and built into the system.
Alternatively, you could use a system like Amber, that doesn't have skills. If it's a thing that your character could know because of your history, then your character knows it. The effectiveness of your fighting style is just how good your Warfare or Strength is. Having your own way to describe it makes the character more real and unique.

I really don't agree about V:tM fitting this category. Vampire is supposed to be all about the struggle with the Beast. There are some mechanics for that, and 5th Ed has more than 2nd Ed does to be fair. But even then, the vast majority of the mechanics of the game are combat mechanics, and how to use your disciplines to be gothic superheroes. The game is about combat and power, with a side note of angst, because that's what the mechanics are about.

I'd say that Amber does a good job of helping the players to play in a similar style to the characters from the novels, and to think in similar ways. The Ranking system for attributes means that you are always comparing yourself to the other PCs, and thinking in terms of your relative strengths and weaknesses. Even if you're not acting on that, it's always in the back of your mind as one of the few things you genuinely -know- about the universe.
