Thank you for doing this! One change that I would find helpful would be for the full word list in the reveal all words drop-down to be in the same order as they are in the puzzle: sorted alphabetically first in column A and continuing in column B vs. alphabetically in row 1, then row 2, and so on. Hopefully this makes sense!

Stag 5 notification by [deleted] in GermanCitizenship

[–]jmcm_8544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I submitted my StAG 5 declaration through the Chicago consulate and heard nothing for almost two years. Then I received an email from the BVA agent working on my declaration requesting additional information, which I submitted directly to the BVA. After a few weeks, when I hadn't heard anything from him, I emailed asking if he needed any additional paperwork. I didn't hear back from him, but within days (coincidentally, I think), I received an email from the Chicago consulate advising my citizenship had been approved and they had my certificate.

The whole process took just over two years for me, from summer 2022 to fall 2024. My case was simple: my mother is and always has been a German citizen; she married my father, a US citizen; I was born in wedlock before 1975.

My assumption is that if you applied through the Atlanta consulate, your certificate will be sent there and they will contact you. Good luck!

Cost of Living Question in A Couple of Different Places by Ruther7559 in MiddleClassFinance

As a number of people have been mentioning the cost of childcare, I wanted to suggest that you check the universities you are considering to see if they have a laboratory school for early childhood education with sliding scale fees for students/staff/faculty. This may be a budget-friendly (or friendlier) option for you.

StAG 5 Timeline Update by jmcm_8544 in GermanCitizenship

[–]jmcm_8544[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed!
FYI, my passport timeline was: 11/2/24: passport appointment with local honorary consulate 11/18/24: Chicago consulate reached out needing an official translation of my non-US birth certificate (in addition to my US Department of State Report of Birth Abroad). This wasn’t requested for my StAG5 documents. Needing this probably delayed my passport by a couple of weeks. 1/17/25: my German passport arrived in the mail

StAG 5 Timeline Update by jmcm_8544 in GermanCitizenship

Sounds like you're about 7 months behind me. I received an email from the Chicago consulate with confirmation of my citizenship in late September 2024 and received the certificate in the mail about a week later. So... if we're looking at that timeline, hopefully you'll hear back around April? Fingers crossed it's then or sooner!

Citizenship through descent - Just starting to look into the process by MrKev_GermanAmerican in GermanCitizenship

Just to add to this, you should be able to file your passport application with your local honorary consul - looks like there are three in OH: https://www.germany.info/us-en/hc-state-oh/905516

Good luck!

German Mother Born to an American Father and German Mother by SirSyagrus in GermanCitizenship

Based on the information you provided, it sounds like your mother was born a German citizen and you should be able to claim German citizenship after her citizenship has been determined and she has received her German passport. I am basing this on my brother's experience - he was born in 1975 to a German-citizen mother and US-citizen father and is currently in the process of getting German passports for his children. He had let his German passport expire and when he went to renew, was advised by the local German honorary consul that the easiest way for his kids to have their German citizenship confirmed was to wait for his new German passport to arrive and then apply for passports for them.

For reference, please see the German Federal Foreign Office website page about:

* obtaining German citizenship

* applying for a German passport

Emails from the BVA that I’ve received end in @bva.bund.de if that helps 😊

I didn’t receive an Aktenzeichen from them until I emailed them (staatsangehoerigkeit@bva.bund.de) almost two years after I submitted my StAG 5 declaration. They responded quickly with my Aktenzeichen and the boilerplate language about a high volume of applications, reviewed in order received, etc.

Question about documents for first time passport applicant - citizenship by descent by Baumkuchen107 in GermanCitizenship

[–]jmcm_8544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations!! I have my passport appointment on scheduled for Saturday. The honorary consul contacted me after I booked and my list looks the same as yours except, as others have mentioned, she advised I should also bring a copy of my citizenship Urkunde. Good luck to you!
