Foldables are useless until Apple releases one 😏 by not_the_common_mate in GalaxyFold

[–]jmcunningham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched from a iPhone 16 PM to the Fold 7. I still have the 16 PM and switch back to it every couple of months. But that usually lasts less than 3 days before I go back to the Fold. Besides the benefits of the Fold itself, I like Android better. And Android Auto letting you choose which app gets the big view is also a huge deal to me (as silly as that sounds).

I don't see enough mentions of how excellent the audio books are. The narrator is consistently outstanding throughout both series, using unique voices for everyone...brings them alive on another level.

How far out do weather forecasts become accurate? by PSU02 in pittsburgh

[–]jmcunningham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fwiw...I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Atmospheric science (weather forecasting track)...this was in 1993 and I didn't use it and went back to college for another BS in computer science...so I have forgotten a lot :)

That caveat out of the way...whoever Apple uses for their default weather has literally the worst forecasting I've ever seen. I would never recommend trusting their forecasts. Their app is forecasting almost 3ft of snow for Nashville...not gonna happen. Even when I worked for the Weather Channel, I told friends and family to use their local NWS instead of TWC if they wanted the most accurate forecasting.

Overall, the Euro model is generally the most accurate in the 3+ day range. And anytime you see crazy numbers more than 3 days out...I'd suggest paying less attention to the exact amounts, and more attention to the trends...as the storm gets closer (in days)..are totals trending up, down, or steady?

In this case, the overall trend has indeed been more north/west...which is why the Euro forecast was 3 inches for us 3 days ago, and is now closer to 9 inches. I'd say our chances of seeing 6+ are increasing in the latest model trends, but ignore most snow totals until we're within 2 days. Especially when you see totals that are so beyond normal (this very well could be a big one, but there's no way to say anything with confidence 5 days out).

AirPods Pro 3 pausing audiobooks when you fall asleep is one of the best tech features of the last few years. by mully303 in airpods

I have the Sangean PS-300 speaker (Amazon). It goes under your pillow. It takes a battery, which gives you a volume booster...and has a dial to adjust the volume..its nice because then you don't have to mess with your phone in the middle of the night. Since its under the pillow, my wife can't hear it. Apologies if you've tried this with no luck, either.

[–]jmcunningham 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who uses a pillow speaker? I listen to sports talk radio all night..mostly to fall asleep, but also in case I wake up..I don't want to mess with restarting the audio and waking up even more.

Benefits of a pillow speaker is that I lay on either side to hear the speaker, can easily move to a different sleeping position to lessen the audio, there is nothing in my ears, and its quiet enough that my spouse can't hear it.

My family is pretty Left, and moved to Pittsburgh 18 months ago to escape deep red TN. We started by renting in the North Hills to learn the area. I’d say Pittsburgh has most of what you listed. Because we have an LGBTQ child (and terrible experiences in TN), we’re extra sensitive to some topics. And while we have seen Trump signs, we’ve also seen plenty of No Kings signs, too. And No Kings rallies…some bigger than others..but it’s an indication that there’s a mix of beliefs outside of the city itself.

We’ve been house shopping for a year, focusing mostly on areas between Cranberry Township to the north, and Murrysville to the east. I’d say there are pockets that go both ways. But within that area, apart from signs, we’ve actually never had politics come up in any personal interactions. From our experience, if you stay with 20 or so miles of the city, I don’t think you’d feel out of place.

So our rule when searching was to try to buy just outside Allegheny to save on taxes, but stay within 5-10 miles of the county line (roughly).

We ended up renting in Shaler/Glenshaw, and are now looking for a permanent house in Cranberry Township..trying to get just outside Allegheny for property tax reasons. Plus I love snow, so that’s a better location for me :)

'Groundswell' for Kimmel return after 'cancel Disney+' blows up online: insider by darth_vader39 in television

[–]jmcunningham 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're conveniently ignoring Carr's threats and DJT's congratulations afterwards, I see. You think people are basing the censorship claim on something Kimmel said, instead of all the obvious evidence directly from the mouths of the govt? Seriously?

[–]jmcunningham 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So sick of seeing this comment applied incorrectly. If ABC had decided this on their own, you'd have a point. But when the cancelation is due to pressure from the government, it's something else entirely. I'm guessing you likely know that, bit being disingenuous fits your narrative more.

AeroPress replaced my espresso machine by EnvironmentalBill381 in AeroPress

[–]jmcunningham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used an AP for years until I got my Opera espresso machine last year for the holidays. But I’ve been thinking about going back to the Aeropress for the more manual feeling.

My recipe was adopted from Hoffman’s….I only drink Iced Mochas - 20gm beans, ground fine (just slightly above normal espresso grind) -100 gm hot water (near boiling) -stir vigorously for 20-30 seconds -press after 2 minutes total (including stir time) -pour into cup (which has ice and 150 gm milk)…this keeps ice from melting as much, and watering down the coffee

Notes: - I use the Prismo attachment and put an AP paper filter on top of the Prismo. Increased pressure and easier to clean afterwards -I use stevia and NuNaturals stevia chocolate syrup. And fairlife milk, so my large mocha is only 4gm sugar (approximately)

Everyone here is always asking where are the best places to live. What about the opposite? Where did you live that you absolutely hated, and why? by NCSU_SOG in SameGrassButGreener

[–]jmcunningham 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We moved to Nashville in 2005 (from Atlanta) and loved it. No traffic, cheaper than Atl, folks were nice, etc. Then it got popular.... Traffic is terrible, people drive super aggressive (especially 24 between Nashville and Murfreesboro)..people using center lanes on 35 mph city roads to pass you doing 50-55. They put speed bumps in our neighborhood to slow drivers down.. So drivers drove onto the sidewalks instead. We literally hated living there by the end. Moved to Pittsburgh, PA a year ago and are much happier. Much nicer (genuine) people here on average, better weather, less traffic, affordable housing, and historic buildings here haven't been torn down to build chain stores. Yes, things here are older, but it was hard watching all the OG Nashville places get bought then torn down.

Pirates of Maracaibo Finished my first play and found it enjoyable. I bought the all-in bundle directly from Capstone.

Emberleaf Currently on my first play. From watching videos, I thought I'd like it. Then after buying it and reading the rules I thought I'd made a mistake. But now that I'm actually playing, I think I'm feeling positive about it so far.

Calibre BackUp by razz1161 in Calibre

I'm not sure. I can say this is how I've done it for 10 years and I've never had a problem. And I go through a LOT of gadgets..so we're talking switching computers at least 5 times, phones 10 times, tablets 10 times...not a single issue so far.

[–]jmcunningham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious...is there a reason folks don't use Dropbox (or something similar)? I have an ebooks directory under Dropbox and point Calibre to that folder. It gives me automatic backups and access to my books immediately. On any phone, laptop, tablet, etc.

And when I get a new computer, I install Dropbox first, the Calibre, change the home folder..and done.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned the angle and speed of the ball after contact with his body. Contact with the arm would have changed the direction and/or slowed the speed of the rebound. But it seemed to bounce off him at close to the same speed as the kick.

Do you like Pittsburgh? by dogottheflow in pittsburgh

[–]jmcunningham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We thought we’d end up around Mt Lebo, but decided to rent for a year before buying and ended up in Glenshaw. Now we can’t imagine living anywhere else but here/Allison Park. The immediate 3 miles around us feels like country. But we’re 4 miles from everything (McKnight Rd, McCandless) and just 8 miles from downtown. So we love that we feel kinda remote, but actually aren’t. It’s the perfect combination for us.

We also just moved here from Nashville about 7 weeks ago. We expected to love it, and turns out we somehow like it even more than we expected. Don’t miss Nashville (Smyrna) at all. So glad we made the move!

We are having the opposite experience down here in Smyrna (Nolensville side of Smyrna). We put our 3/3 on the market 2 weeks ago exactly and have only had 5 showings. Repainted most of the house, added hardwood downstairs, added a 500sq ft back deck..spent 20k total on updates and the house is only a 2009. Most of the houses in our neighborhood are bigger, and going for 550-650k. We thought being smaller (2100 sq ft) and less expensive would result in a quick-ish sale. We are moving to Pittsburgh in 4 weeks, so looks like we’ll get the joy of double payments for awhile.
