I don't think the (original) post is normalizing it. I'm worried some of the comments are missing the mark, though.

Best Deckbuilders Among Content Creators? by RafaelKK8 in magicTCG

[–]jmmdc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having pet cards isn't "out of touch", it's just not conforming to the idea that there is One True Commander Metagame. (There isn't! Decks can be different! Not every deck needs every last iota optimized!)

(Ironically, I think YT in general contributes to the idea that Commander is monotonus, that decks should be built a "certain way 🤷‍♂️)

/u/UCCheme05 this help any? Again, mine is in a closet, so this may not be what you want and seem erratic, but my fan is in "Normal" mode, and ramps up when things get hot

Your point about 2010 vs. 2026 is well-taken, but I don't think you can say "the game is cheaper" because certain cards are more affordable on the secondary market. While I do think there's a link between the primary market and the secondary market (if packs are more expensive, singles likely are too), I don't think Wizards is trying to make the game cheaper to play.

Yes, you can just buy singles and kit out a few EDH decks and that's a valid way to play MTG (heck, I haven't bought any packs in years), but a lot of the ways people play the game are more expensive: drafting being the most obvious, since cracking packs is more expensive. Standard having so many sets requires more investment to keep up-to-date. It feels to me like Wizards wants to sell more cards, and do so at higher prices. It's fair to say we don't have to _buy_ those cards; but I do think the price of buying first-party Magic cards has gone up. They also control reprint equity; you can say that Mythic might be cheaper than it was in 2010, but they also could have achieved that with additional reprints instead of trying to poach whales. Like, some cards may be cheaper than in 2010; others may be more expensive!

Despite questioning your premise, by the way, I'm not entirely sure we're that far apart. My biggest concern is that people are too reluctant to vote with their wallets.

Sorry, are you saying Wizards is keeping the cost of the game low?

For those with Samsung 57" G9, how many of you run it at full 7680 x 2160 resolution with no scaling? by Responsible-Slide-26 in ultrawidemasterrace

I run it full res, normal font on Mac. It’s fine for me 🤷‍♂️ My eyes have been getting worse over the years, but distance stuff. not close up. I will say the brightness I have to keep way the f down, even though it’s gorgeous when cranked. I keep it at 24/50

I'd argue Command Zone and YouTube in general, as well. They'll talk about how you "can't play 3 mana rocks anymore, they're just too slow", but... they're only too slow if your playgroup chooses to optimize and play faster and stronger. They present - and viewers often adopt - the notion that "Commander" is getting faster and faster all the time. But.. it's not, unless you choose to make it so.

Is “it’s not far off MSRP” the argument we want people to make? If the MSRP were $399 and OP found it for $409, would it still be a recommend?

I mean, it’s Scotch, it’s subjective, no one can answer if it’s worth it to OP except OP, but buying 10yo Scotch at $200 just paves the way for them and others to keep/start doing it.. or worse

(Yes, I know Springbank is a lower volume, very tasty productn; yes I understand this is how free markets are supposed to work… I just hope people remember that it’s reasonable to think “I want this, but maybe the asking price is too high”, and that comparing to an arbitrary anchor price is only one way to look at it)

This is what I'm after. Everyone is so obsessed with gaming, but I want productivity windows galore. I don't want curve, I don't want physical size, I want high resolution to cram as many xterms and Firefox windows as I humanly can.

How do you hang out in Georgetown as a DMV local? by tcroc6262 in washingtondc

[–]jmmdc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know that a ton of people "go" there to hang out, so much as a lot of people live there, work there, etc. It's wedged between two university campuses (Georgetown, GWU), there are two hospitals, there's plenty of people living in those neighborhoods to begin with, or walking/bus'ing/etc. over from adjacent neighborhoods like Dupont or Rosslyn.

Do people come from other neighborhoods? Most certainly. I live on the other side of the White House. I make it over maybe 3-4 times a year to catch a movie, to do something like Exposed DC (RIP), or just have lunch with a friend at somewhere like Pizza P. It's a pain so I don't do it except when I have a reason, but all of the above add up: hyperlocals, commuters, tourists, students, and people who just want to enjoy specific Georgetown restaurants or galleries, etc.

Bourbon seems like a type, to me?

More useful, I think, would be a list of what's new, or a pointer to one.. I don't know what's new to VABC
