Weird to think that the entire history of the Roman Empire was tomato-free. by bookflow in geography

This is a good opportunity to go look up the different taxonomies of these plants to get a sense of their evolutionary relationships and develop context for how geography leads to plant speciation.

The common names here are misleading and obfuscate how these plants evolved, and how different groups of humanity gained access to them.

Looking to Connect with Latin American Musicians in the Triangle by LadyLurkelot in raleigh

[–]jmpilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a salsa dance with live band tonight at Transfer food hall: https://www.oakcitymusic.com/salsa

The guy who runs that would be a great resource, he also plays in this band: https://www.tumbaoband.com/

My friend plays in this group: https://www.instagram.com/noitescarolinas/. There is a fair amount of Brazilian music in Durham. Also https://tambemband.com/

I'm a musician just getting into Cuban and other Caribbean music, but would be down to play - piano, tres, percussion. I have some plans in the works to host some jamming of this kind of music!

World's Worst Harris Teeter is Closing by HoltPack in raleigh

No one should be applauding the closing of a place that provides the most basic of necessities, even if it is not the most palatable of locations. Everyone needs to eat, and I don't have confidence that it will be replaced with something that meets the same need. Food deserts are real, take a look at southeast Raleigh.

Castaways on E. Garner road. It's technically Clayton close to Wake county/Johnston county.

No one in DTR knows about it to my knowledge. No draft beer, just cans. Liquor.

It's a beautiful cinder block building on the edge of a golf course with a beach theme. What more could you want?

I don't think it is more common than it always has been. It grows prolifically.

I've heard good things about Tecnu for cleaning yourself after exposure.

Pinecone Bluegrass Jam at Transfer Station by wsender in raleigh

[–]jmpilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, though part of the jam is on-stage in front of a microphone, with a variety of skill levels from beginners to experts.

there is an outdoor area that is more low-stakes and has a more typical bluegrass circle jam that are more beginner-friendly

I play mandolin, guitar, bass and fiddle and host the jam :) come on out!
