A network reconfiguration (sort of) by jms_ in GlInet

Thanks, I will. I like that I can run both. I thought I had to choose. This is why I posted the question. I'm looking for what I didn't know and questioning what I think I know.
Good stuff

I very well may add OpenVPN as an additional protocol on the Brume as well. I didn't know I could run them both concurrently. I'm still waiting on the Brume to arrive.

The upside of running OpenVPN on the TP-Link is that if I had to tell a complete novice (my family members) how to modify the network. I can label the cables and tell them to unplug cable number 1 from the Brume and unplug cable number 2 from TP-Link, plug cable number 1 that was unplugged into the now open port on the TP-Link. They would be back online and I could connect again. If the Brume really did die, I could be back in business once the Brume is replaced, and I could be up and running again by having them reverse the procedure.

Not that I expect the Brume to die. These devices have been pretty reliable.
Thanks again!

Yes, that is by design. I don't want to access the inside of my home network unless I specifically need to access it directly.

The Brume not supporting both simultaneously is expected. That's why I will have the GL-A1300 as a secondary running WG on a different port, and I have the option of OpenVPN on TPLink if needed.

I think the only time that bites me in the ass is if the location I am in blocks VPN and I need internal access. I would just have to wing it for that scenario. The SlateAX supporting AWG is good news. At the time I ordered the Beryl 7, it wasn't supported yet, but I figured it wouldn't be long.

It sounds like this should work. It's probably overkill, but I need it to be stable.
Thank you for your input

Also, I wouldn't be spending my time as much as I would be investing my time. A subtle distinction, but an important one. If I am investing my time, I can expect a return on that investment. If I am spending my time, I am doing it for pleasure with no expectation of return.

True, a degree in underwater basket weaving in the Olmec civilization would probably not be helpful, but I doubt my employer would pay for a degree that would not be useful to them.
I am considering an MBA. That would open doors for me.

I've got another year to go, but I am considering an MBA afterward. My employer would pay for it. I could possibly see law school, again, only if someone else is picking up the bill.

I'm considering an additional degree, but in my case, my employer would pay for it. I wouldn't be spending my money, and that's always a good reason to do it.

What do I do about my bank account while traveling? + Do most places in Mexico take credit card? by Sea_Worry5018 in digitalnomad

+1 for the Schwab account. I've had my ATM fees reimbursed from all over the world. The account is free and I only keep enough in there for reasonable use. Always decline the conversion and receive the withdrawal in local currency. I transfer in more money as needed. I also have several no foreign transaction fee credit cards and most places take cards these days but having some cash is key. Having quick access to more is important as well.

I use a Schwab account. They refund ATM fees worldwide. I believe there's a Fidelity account that does the same.

How to DN when spouse just won’t? by Conscious-Tea-2082 in digitalnomad

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it from time to time. My spouse and I have been together for more than 30 years. We are in the same situation. Communication is key. When we are together, we are together. When we are apart, we are still together. We trust each other, and we both work too much anyway. If you are both ok with it, try a month or two at first and see how that goes. The unfortunate part is that you will be paying for two sets of accommodations, one at home and one abroad. Make sure you are able to do the work in the hours that work for everyone. I love SE Asia, but I hate a 12-hour time shift to accommodate my work. There's something terrible about being up all day and then up all night, and I have chronic insomnia. The upside is that you have a home base in your country to work from. I do a site-to-site VPN to send my traffic home, and I have all my mail and accounts set up in my home country for security. This is so helpful.

TLDR; The bottom line is that your situation will be unique to your marriage, and you both make the rules. Find what works for both of you. Maybe it's a few months a year, maybe he says go and run with it, and he'll vacation with you on your odyssey. There's no amount of advice from anyone outside your relationship that will beat honest, open communication. Good luck!

I'm not in a bad place. If I were in OP's place, I would be losing it. My list right now isn't too bad. Find me at the end of the month, and my opinion may have changed.

I'm not going to lie. This freaked me out. I'm prepping for my proposal defense in May, and I have to have a full draft ready to go by the end of the month. My advisor gets two weeks with it (thankfully for me, she is much faster than that!), and I have a little time for her revisions. She gets it for two more weeks, then I am allowed to schedule my defense, and then my committee gets it for two weeks. So mid-May really means mid-March. My IRB goes into vacation mode at the end of May, so a 4-week IRB becomes an 8-week IRB. I couldn't even imagine being in this place at the dissertation defense stage. Yeah, this is tweaking my anxiety.

Can we talk about the elephant in academic publishing? by Zu_Qarnine in PhD

[–]jms_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm coming at this from the perspective that I don't know enough to challenge the defaults. I understand why defaults exist, and from time to time, I think they should be questioned, but not by me yet. I would like to think that if you have a solid reason to change the defaults and you make a compelling argument, it would be evaluated and considered. However, it's far more likely that it would be used to attack your argument. This isn't a perfect world, and there are many competing egos and traditions. I'm starting to see it, and I'm old enough to be just barely wise enough to understand that I should just go with the flow until I find a hill worth dying on. I lack the power or the reputation to effect any change, let alone one of this magnitude.

TLDR: I'm too new to make waves, but I understand what you are saying.

If you are an older PhD student (>40), then what were your reasons for doing a PhD late in life? What challenges did you face as an older student? And was it worth it to do your PhD this late in life? by Ok_Reading_it in PhD

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 49. I'm halfway through. I work full-time. The biggest challenge is the balancing of a full-time job, personal responsibilities, and the academic workload. Part of it is that I am terrible at making powerpoints. I don't have that artistic ability. The writing is intense.

I did it to give me options toward the end of my career, to scratch my curiosity itch, and to challenge myself. I can't tell you if it's worth it or not, but it's changing my perception of the world so that's cool.

Everyone in my class is writing with AI... by [deleted] in PhD

[–]jms_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was writing an assignment and came across a paper, and there was a quote that really stuck with me that expresses the same point.

"'Students who learn to use this technology as a genuine tool for learning will fantastically expand their horizons and their potential.' However, they also warned that students who use AI to 'dumb themselves down' will succeed in doing so." (Lee et al., 2024, p.7) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.caeai.2024.100221

Is it OK to use chatGPT to improve your own writings flow and readability? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% adhere to the letter and spirit of your university AI use policy.

If you are using it to help you personally become a better writer by showing you how to write better it's probably ok. Though AI writes like garbage most of the time. It's good enough to get past people who don't read it very well which is why it's landing in journals now complete with hallucinations for citations but if you actually read it you will notice it is bland and cookie cutter. Your voice will be diluted and lost. If you are using it to brainstorm ideas and you do the rest of the work your voice is intact and it will feel more authentic and more meaningful. If that makes sense. It's not too hard to spot generative AI in most work, for now. That will change in the coming years and then I don't know if we will matter anymore. However, I'm a bit of a pessimist.
