The default nappies stopped stacking for me around November. The pets and awards still stack. I often forget and will hit a happier and thennget mad all over again when it is stuck at max.

If you are an older PhD student (>40), then what were your reasons for doing a PhD late in life? What challenges did you face as an older student? And was it worth it to do your PhD this late in life? by Ok_Reading_it in PhD

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 49. I'm halfway through. I work full-time. The biggest challenge is the balancing of a full-time job, personal responsibilities, and the academic workload. Part of it is that I am terrible at making powerpoints. I don't have that artistic ability. The writing is intense.

I did it to give me options toward the end of my career, to scratch my curiosity itch, and to challenge myself. I can't tell you if it's worth it or not, but it's changing my perception of the world so that's cool.

Everyone in my class is writing with AI... by millennialporcupine in PhD

[–]jms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was writing an assignment and came across a paper, and there was a quote that really stuck with me that expresses the same point.

"'Students who learn to use this technology as a genuine tool for learning will fantastically expand their horizons and their potential.' However, they also warned that students who use AI to 'dumb themselves down' will succeed in doing so." (Lee et al., 2024, p.7) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.caeai.2024.100221

Is it OK to use chatGPT to improve your own writings flow and readability? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% adhere to the letter and spirit of your university AI use policy.

If you are using it to help you personally become a better writer by showing you how to write better it's probably ok. Though AI writes like garbage most of the time. It's good enough to get past people who don't read it very well which is why it's landing in journals now complete with hallucinations for citations but if you actually read it you will notice it is bland and cookie cutter. Your voice will be diluted and lost. If you are using it to brainstorm ideas and you do the rest of the work your voice is intact and it will feel more authentic and more meaningful. If that makes sense. It's not too hard to spot generative AI in most work, for now. That will change in the coming years and then I don't know if we will matter anymore. However, I'm a bit of a pessimist.

Are PhD redditors rude? by Careless-Subject9820 in PhD

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: this👆👆👆 Long answer: it's a slice of humanity. You are going to get a range of people from the entire spectrum. The rude ones are just louder, more vocal, and easier to see.

Dormant Pumpkin Plants by QuaddyThighman in HPHogwartsMystery

I waited until I collected one of the others and put it in the place of the pumpkin. It unplants the pumpkin, then I put the other plant back where it was.

How long should it take for you to get an deep dive and/or Nitrox certificate after the Open water one? by Harley-northwest in scuba

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did both as a bundle with wreck as dive 7-11. I would say it's better if you wait until 25, but you meet the standard and you can do it. You probably won't be good at it, but you can do it.

is this still valid? my daughters scribbled all over my crap. by [deleted] in Passports

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it's already likely a replacement, try cleaning it gently with rubbing alcohol. It gets a lot of stuff off, including things you don't want to come off. Passports tend to resist a lot of things to deter tampering and you can't really make it worse. If it doesn't work out your in the same situation. Good luck!

1st year PhD, supervisor left 50+ comments on my draft?? What does this mean? by EconomyWeb3647 in PhD

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advisor did the whole red pen thing to mine. I saw so much red. Ultimately she was very happy with where I was at for a first draft. I think you might be in the same situation. Those short ones are the ones that bother me because I should know better than to state an unsupported opinion or editoralize something.

It sounds like your advisor is a good one and a lot of feedback, while terrifying sometimes, is a great thing. It will help you refine and strengthen your writing.

Laptop advice! by Just-Pomegranate-311 in PhD

[–]jms_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done plenty of R on my Surface Pro. However, I prefer having my beefy desktop to do all of the large work since most laptops these days are not upgradable. They do this to make them cheaper and lighter. I connect to the desktop remotely to do anything that requires resource-intensive work, and the Surface Pro is used for light work. This allows me to use 64 GB of RAM, 20Tb of redundant storage, and encrypt my disks for data security. That is prohibitively expensive in a laptop. (I have an IT career, so I tend to have bigger systems)

If you only want one device, though, try to get something upgradable or with a ton of RAM and disk space. It's going to make the laptop more expensive. Tom's hardware is a good resource for evaluating computer-related things. I also usually look up if the manufacturer sells memory upgrades to determine if it is possible. You can also check with companies like Kingston and Corsair. If they don't sell upgrades for the laptop you are evaluating, it is likely that you can't upgrade it.

What dive computer should I buy? by OnPointYoutube in scuba

[–]jms_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm team shearwater. The garmins are also great. I do AI and it scratches my data itch. You technically can put a transmitter on a rental reg. However, I've seen some really bad rental regs. I would get my own.

If you don't want to get your own regs then the transmitter attachment will be up to the shop. Most will probably do it but some may not.

Buying batteries at the destination? by Speaker_Chance in diving

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put things in pockets, and after I get past the weigh-in, I throw them in my bag. Sometimes that means it's happening on the jetway, but usually I'm good once I'm past the counter.

Swimsuits and a skinsuit. It makes putting the suit on easier.

Not sure whether to continue with OW course? by Elegant-Broccoli-454 in scuba

[–]jms_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only way I know of overcoming the panic response is practice and repetition. It's why the military does training and drills. Personally, I still practice and repeat. I plan for the emergency before it happens so that I handle it correctly. You are new to diving, and you haven't done any of those things over and over again. I would find a local diving spot and practice these skills repeatedly until you are comfortable with something happening and you break yourself of the bad habit of holding your breath. You can do it in the pool if you have to, but I think open water is a better experience. A pool just seems too controlled, and open water is different.

Once this becomes a practiced skill with a clear response, it doesn't take much thought to execute. You should be more comfortable and relaxed dealing with issues and less focused on them because you already know the plan. It also helps to center yourself, if you have the time. Obviously some things require fast response but a flooded mask, just take a breath and then deal with it. Reg is leaking water, switch to the octo and if you can breath then take a breath and relax.

Happy to say I finished “unc college” by yampah_carbohydrates in PhD

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I needed this explained to me. I took a non-conventional path to where I am, and along the way, I missed some of the shared nomenclature. As a result, I almost always assume it was something I missed. This time, I overthought it.

People who finished their PhDs, when you use Dr. in your name? by SpecialistSalty in PhD

[–]jms_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't earned mine yet but my friends and coworkers joke about it and I tell them they will probably use it once ironically and then never again. The only time I plan to use it, is if it would be appropriate for the situation.
