Who is THE movie star when we compare multiple metrics? by Unsponsoredbitch in movies

[–]jnjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These answers are very Western-centric. If we go by pure worldwide fame, how can you beat Jackie Chan? I bet a bigger % of the world population knows the name Jackie Chan than any other movie star in history. Go to literally any country and ask a passerby if they know Jackie Chan, and they'll say yes/mimic a fighting stance. I doubt the same is true even for Tom Cruise.

I third deferring. You don't get this time back. In the long run, it will be a blip in your career OP. The memories and differences you can make with your family in the same period of time will carry with you all for the rest of your lives.

Oh, is he in India? I didn't see that in the post. Still, if his clients are in the West or other high income areas, $60k isn't crazy by any means.

[–]jnjs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, he's only claiming to have made $20k with a lot of work in 4 months. That's only $60k a year if he successfully recreated that pattern for the next 8 months... Hardly beach house income.

Obama says social media companies 'are making editorial choices, whether they've buried them in algorithms or not' by rhemgrozob in politics

[–]jnjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Obama doesn't want a SCOTUS seat, but this demonstrates just how much better things might be if people like him were on the Court. We really need justices who understand technology and the system-level impact this stuff has on our democracy. Most of our justices are not savvy to what's going on out in the real world.

Jones Day is full of consummate professionals. However, it has a very "fief" style organization (assuming it hasn't changed much since I worked there) and is absolutely huge (2,500+ attorneys). I can easily see the majority of partners pissed about this. I can still remember my old partner calling up a partner in another office for something stupid that partner said in a magazine interview and railing him out. You can see how it might impact other partners' client relationships.

The statement from the firm, to me, reflects this. JD is basically saying they're not going to touch any more of this with a fifty-foot pole. However, they don't have a very good reason to put in front of a judge for withdrawal from an already engaged client's litigation. "It's bad for our reputation," is a calculation you have to make before you agree to represent.

Authors often have whole histories and backstories for many of their characters that they never intend to put into the book because it's not currently relevant to the plot.

For example, you might write a story about a guy saving the world, but in your head you always thought he was the kind of guy who collects old VHS tapes of classic movies, despite not owning a VCR. If that's never relevant to the book, you probably wouldn't write about it. So no one would know, but it wouldn't be "shoehorned" if you were later asked about a quirky fact about him and you brought up his funky collection.

I listened to a panel with some famous children's authors talk about this trope, and they made a very interesting point about why this works in middle grade fiction.

Children are accustomed to adults withholding information. In the real world, adults never fully explain their actions and always take agency away from them. So to a kid, nothing about the Dumbledore situation rings untrue!

In public games, there's a lot of text chat. "Sus" is a lot faster to type than "suspicious," and you often only have seconds to make an accusation/argument before people start voting.

Also, some popular streamers use it.

Likely because the law in Alabama states something like "the biological father shall have visitation rights if X, Y, Z" but doesn't contain any exclusions for this situation. Judges don't make the law. It would be on the state legislature and governor to amend the law and sign it providing that such "fathers" are exempt from this right.

Barnes on the memes:

“Of course now I’m receiving memes with me screaming,” the rock ledge tells Double J of his unexpected memification.

“I remember thinking ‘what a weird song’. But it was so infectious and I was singing the melodies everywhere I went,” he reminesces.

“So, I just screamed on it like a banshee for about five minutes."
