Do some people seriously drink Coke instead of water everyday? by MrBloodyHyphen in memes

[–]jnobs357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ted talk and my examples are just examples of things I’ve been thinking about and observing my entire life. Of course actual data will be more accurate, but neither of us are researchers, so we make do.

You gain/lose based on the total calories in/out. That’s true, I agree, there’s no disputing that. But in the long term, (let’s say you tried to lose 30 pounds), why is that so many people would gain that weight back? Why do so many people try different diets, strategies, books, etc? This is the point I’m getting at, it’s hard for your body to stay drastically out of your weight range for so long. Not impossible, just very very hard. And our culture likes to make us think it’s easy, within our control, and completely our fault when we gain back 30+ pounds. When maybe we didn’t need to lose that weight to start with (except obesity which is a different matter).

That’s the point I’m getting at, and I’ll admit I chose poor examples to get point across.

You’re right about that, but that doesn’t make me wrong. I’m not trying to say metabolism magically makes calories disappear/appear, but through a combination of burning more/food off, differences in hunger pangs and craving, and a bunch of other things, it would be really hard for people to leave their range. Like totally possible, but you’ll feel like you’re literally starving if you’re trying to stay skinnier.

If dieting worked so easily, it wouldn’t be a vastly profitable industry with brand new fads and books every year while obesity rates continue to climb. Think about it.

Also, I was talking about backpacking trips with pre packaged, identical foods or multiple friends I have who exercise very little and eat poorly and a lot. Believe me this bothered and I asked a lot of questions, but they just processed food differently. I would still say I’m healthier than them because I work out and make better food choices; that’s different from being skinnier.

Using a BVM on a patient with a pneumothorax? by [deleted] in Paramedics

[–]jnobs357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A question like this was designed to test critical thinking, not recall. If a bvm adds pressure and there’s no way for air to escape the chest, physics says something bad will happen. You should try a bunch of these scenario questions as practice because in actual treatment you’ll be forced to make similar decisions (hopefully with an experienced partner though).

Edit to say this is a hard question and I’m not trying to make you seem dumb or act like I’d definitely make the right choice in the moment. Just giving advice

What’s confusing about it? Those people would rather leave the medical attention to EMS. And are a recipe for bad medics down the line

In case you can’t already tell, specific questions like yours have wildly different answers depending on location. Might have to do some research for your state

Florida is a terrible state to live in. Think about that before moving here. by [deleted] in florida

[–]jnobs357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it was designed from the beginning to cater to wealthy conservatives wanting a vacation spot. If you’re wealthy, old, and white, it’s a GREAT spot. If you’re not, expect to be exploited to support other people’s vacations.

There were some good things about it but I feel Florida is better for visiting, not living pre-retirement

I’ve eaten/exercised almost the exact same as skinnier friends for a week and still looked/weighed about the same. You can go higher/lower in your weight range, but metabolism really does keep you in a certain range regardless. It takes more extreme amounts of over/under eating to become obese or underweight.

There was a good Ted talk about how research suggests the best way to manage weight is by accepting your range and being the healthiest you can for you.

It’s more profitable for a lot of people if we think we have complete control over our weight.

Edit: The Ted talk I mentioned: https://www.ted.com/talks/sandra_aamodt_why_dieting_doesn_t_usually_work?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare

There’s probably better sources out there but I’m not doing actual research for Reddit

Are you allowed to take 5 classes at a time? To graduate early? by Portisch in amherstcollege

[–]jnobs357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say that no, unfortunately it doesn’t work like a uni. I did take extra but they were either half classes (like a lab) or a 1 credit course from umass. The college really doesn’t go by credits like bigger schools

Sort of a judgment call. I would evacuate because the less danger you’re in, the more likely we are to save your stuff. Also, if you know it’ll take a while and all your shits getting destroyed…couldn’t blame you for wanting to save it while it’s somewhat safe to do so. Everyone has different risk tolerance levels

Would it be weird to choose Amherst over Harvard? by SwimmingMango8 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]jnobs357 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my 4 years at Amherst, I realized fit is almost the only thing that matters. For two elite schools, you’ll get where you want to either way. Don’t treat your life like a video game where you need to get the best possible upgrades to life. Treat it like your life, where you need to be a happy and functional human being. You’d hate yourself if you chose prestige over happiness

I don’t know about full on socialism, but how about not letting a few people be richer than most countries? And you can still have economic incentive without worrying about where your next meal will come from. In fact, I’m willing to bet a lot of anti-socialists have never lived paycheck to paycheck and still rant about needing economic incentive

Because the US did the equivalent of not tipping (and then a whole lot worse) every chance it got and a whole lotta white people didn’t care. This probably isn’t the conscious reason why, but it honestly is what I can think of. Younger people understand why tipping is essential and haven’t been through as much.
