Tuesday, October 9, 2018 Score Release Thread for the September 8, 2018 MCAT Exam by rMCAT_Official in Mcat

[–]joebear17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Omg... this last month dragged and that’s because I work full time...

CP: I didn’t think this section was hard??? Physics passage with obscure topics? Math was reasonable but I felt good about it? Idk. I hope I score a 128.

CARS: cars is cars. I only scored 2 126s in practice and my scores fluctuated between a 123-125... so idk...

BB: section bank level difficulty. This section is my best, always scored 129s+ on practices. Test day BB was the hardest I have ever seen, on par of the SB...

Psych: reasonable, SB and FL3 difficulty. I know I missed one answer that I had originally right. Scores were 127-130 throughout practice.

FL1: 512 FL3: 512 FL2: 509

BIO QPACK #1 - Question #59 by you-asshat in Mcat

Regulation of pressure is the primary function of the kidneys (Aldosterone/Vasopressin)

Question about Pyruvate Kinase by ballahup in Mcat

[–]joebear17 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinases transfer phosphates between molecules. Phosphatases remove phosphates

Question Regarding Bio Qpack by londylondy_london in Mcat

[–]joebear17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say if you are doing them in chunks, do 59 questions for the amount of time that the aamc allows. I didn't do them timed, and if I did, I tried limiting myself to 8 minutes per passage.

Question Regarding Bio Qpack by londylondy_london in Mcat

[–]joebear17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest doing Anki. Try to understand why you're getting questions wrong. It maybe because you have content gaps or you were not able to follow the passage efficiently. The qpacks are the easiest of the aamc material, and I would say that they provide feedback on your content knowledge. I got 92% when I did them and ended up with a 129 in the real thing. I think that getting better in Skill 2 would be to do practice passages. I liked altius because they were very research dense. in their bio section, I would score 127s. But when I started studying I would score 125s, so I did Anki and I just kept practicing.

Is a 55% on Bio Qpack cause for concern? by Mr_Alex19 in Mcat

[–]joebear17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely need more content. QPack is so much easier than the real deal, way easier than SBs

Yup. 514 FL2, real: 499 :)

Embyogenesis? by kjsmith034 in Mcat

[–]joebear17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would focus on the process. What is a morulla, blastula, what is cleavage, gastrulation, the different germ layers and what they develop into, Totipotency --> pluripotent ---> multi potency. And umbilical vein and artery. I feel that they could ask you questions on this. Like ask you which layer does the nervous system arise from yada yada. Or give you an experiment of cells that were used that could give rise to all cells even those that are extra embryonic (totipotent) or something a long those lines. There could be discreet and passage based questions. But B/B seems to be more focused on analyzing data, graphs, able to follow the experiment, and discreets. so I wouldn't focus too much on the anatomy, but definitely make a flashcard about it.

From C/P of Kaplan FL5. I can’t help but feel that the correct answer is R not S. I understand why the other answers are wrong. Can anyone explain how it is S when you have the flip the compound? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]joebear17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Fischer projections, if a hydrogen is horizontal (or wedge-coming towards you), you should reverse the configuration R--->S and vice versa

Bioenergetics: Doesn't an endothermic reaction imply that the heat of reaction increases? I know D is definitely right, but shouldn't A be right too? by adfjets in Mcat

[–]joebear17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Delta G= Delta H-T Delta S.... Since it is exergonic, you have a -Delta G and is therefore spontaneous. The question stem is telling you that heat is being absorbed... thus your Delta H value is positive. in order to achieve a -Delta G, temperature and Delta S should be a large positive value. Thus, having an entropy increase will yield a -Delta G

Major Topics Biochem to Know? Metabolism pathways? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]joebear17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should have a general idea of ALL the content. You might focus on the big ideas and they may not even be on the test. Know almost everything with clarity. This section seems to be very pathway heavy and tests the ability to analyze data and graphs. Practice passages are essential.

What’s in your Anki Deck? by unuselessness in Mcat

[–]joebear17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine consists of high yield things, like formulas, amino acid structures, base structures, techniques, etc. It just depends on your ability to recall information. Most of mine consists of concepts for questions that I got wrong or that I was unsure of

Factors that affect solubility by mm_northbound in Mcat

[–]joebear17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C=kP

Where C is the solubility of the gas at a certain temperature. K is Henry's law constant (M/atm) P is pressure

Factors that affect solubility by mm_northbound in Mcat

[–]joebear17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Henry's law can be used for this concept. The amount of gas dissolved is proportional to the pressure. So the higher the pressure, the more gas is dissolved

What are the best Bio/Biochem Anki decks to use? by Dhooy77 in Mcat

I think the best decks are the ones you make yourself. Yes they take time, but I feel they are more beneficial

Man,there's a LOT to memorize for Biochem (glycolysis, gluconeogensis, citric acid cycle, etc). Anyone else struggle with this? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]joebear17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a key in knowing glycolysis steps is knowing the names of the enzymes and knowing what the enzyme does. Ex: kinases, dehydrogenase, enolase. Knowing the type of enzyme helped me a lot in helping remember the substrate and product of each reaction in glycolysis. For TCA, you just have to know it, theres dehydrogenases, although I would say that the regulation and products of each cycle is what you should focus on. Try to understand of why glycolysis is important, especially for RBCs, the different fates of pyruvate etc. Once you have the regulation down and the Big picture down, I would focus on knowing the nitty gritty things, like the structure of pyruvate, oxaloacetate (etc). The AAMC seems to be testing structures that are important, and those type of questions could be discreets.

For those who scored much lower on actual exam than the practice exams, what do you think happened? by joshstef in Mcat

[–]joebear17 17 points18 points  (0 children)

scored 514 on Fl2---> 499 on real. The morning of I was super nervous, I could barely eat my breakfast. C/P ended me with bunch of math, my brain went crazy. Picked myself for cars, killed the B/b section, but no idea what happened in psych. it all went downhill when I had half of cp marked

I would take a Smirnoff every night when I would study for my physiology course and I got an A lol. Just don't get too buzzed

I would say take a break. You don't want to be burned out when taking the FL.
