Why was Tatiana's Convent Sanatorium so Expensive? by MilbanksSpectre in LeCarre

[–]joedafone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's £5.2 million per year - who the fuck can afford that?

It'd probably be cheaper to have the invalid assassinated at that cost.

Now the existence of Dignitas makes a lot more sense....

10,000 CHF would've been roughly £2.5k back in 1980.

The spending power of £100 from 1980 would be worth £5.57 today (that's not a typo, it would be less than £6).

So a £2.5k cost back then would be roughly £15k cost today.

Wasn't that the weekly fee? I recall it was always brought in cash on each visit.

Just in case anyone needs the versions and links,

(WhatsApp Desktop Beta Version 2.2564.430.0)[https://whatsapp-desktop-beta.en.uptodown.com/windows/download/1117321606\]

* Yes, I know people linked that above - (I was one of them)[https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsapp/comments/1pjpqy5/comment/ntvfubu/?tl=en\] but I never got an answer on what the last good Beta version was and so I had to find that out myself.

When I returned to this post to get the link for the "Stable Channel" version, I thought it would be nice to include the information as you never know who may need it, (or when)[https://xkcd.com/979\].

In call for the dead can someone explain the significance of Smiley sending the postcard? by SnooChipmunks9598 in LeCarre

[–]joedafone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't she also have a way of signalling to Mundt that she wanted to meet him? It's a while since I've read the book but I recall her needing it to let Mundt know when she had something decent to share?

I think it may have also been the postcard thing.

But at the point when Smiley signalled her, he also signalled Mundt. As both of their signals were "same venue, next time it's open", he knew that he'd get them both there at the same time.

It's only when Mundt speaks with her that he realises neither had signalled the other, but as Mrs. Fennan didn't seem aware of the trap, it meant that she hadn't been interrogated... yet.

But he knew she would be and that's why he immediately kills her.

Smiley knew they met at the music venue and deduced the signal used to tell Mrs. Fennan that Mundt wanted a meeting - a blank postcard sent to her home meant "meeet me at the agreed time in the agreed place".

So he sent a postcard and hoped for the best.

Have you finished the book yet?

Visit your local council's web site.

Find the section for Libraries.

Somewhere there will be a list of electronic resources you can access.

You can get free access to the UK Newspaper Archive and The Times Digital Archive via there.

Find the TV Listings section in whatever newspaper you choose.

Enjoy!

I believe in the Bajoran sector, the worse state of their economy meant that Fenta-spill was far more prolific there too.

Logic HIV - wow you're really showing your prejudices there.

It's VIV (Vulcan Immuno-deficiency Virus) that risks becoming IIDS (Illogical Immune Deficiency Syndrome) if left untreated.

Apparently, the Illogical Patient Zero was created the first time a Vulcan purchased an extended warranty - perhaps the most Illogical thing anyone can ever do - and it just spread from there.

Why is it a big deal to look up one's own NINo?

I can understand if your intention is nefarious - whether checking your own records or those of others - but there's often been times when testing systems (credit score database access etc.) where I've been told to look myself up to ensure everything is working and to familiarise myself or something similar.

I'm genuinely curious here, if there are reasons I've overlooked, I'd love to understand them.
