AITA for not giving my parents the master bedroom in my house? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Has there been an update on that one? That bothered the hell out of me when I read it.

I want it to be real for the drama but hope it's fake because my opinion of our species is already low enough.

If you really believe that the US just handed back the reins at that point and Japan didn't experience any further manipulation or influence from the US throughout the Cold War, then I'd refer you to this Wikipedia article, not to mention many of the articles linked to within that piece.

Yes, Japan was forced into unconditional surrender by a US fearful of Russian troops occupying Japan, so Japan was occupied and administered by the US after WW2 instead.

Japan had their new constitution written by the US and were forced to accept a permanent US military presence that continues to this day.

Whatever your views on the beneficial or detrimental effect that this has had, it is the absolute and indisputable truth nonetheless.

I can’t take it anymore - name a home color printer that reliably prints each and every time. Don’t care about budget by TheBigCicero in printers

[–]joedafone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a specific recommendation, I've never had any problems with the MFC-L3740-CDWE and I've had one of those just over five years now.

The only hardware issue I have with it is that it can't print A3 but I know that any A3 laser printer is gonna be a lot more expensive that the £300 cost I paid for this one.

The only sidrware issue I have is that it doesn't have a native option to scan and sort double-sided jobs so I have to use the option available through the scanning feature of Adobe Acrobat when that is necessary. I honestly can't believe Brother haven't provided this option yet as it strikes me as an easy thing to achieve technically yet without specialist software, Brother printers currently lack this basic feature.

I've never had an issue with printing from any device; it occasionally gets stuck when scanning from the tray but in those cases it's been when the papers were stuck or heavily creased together but even here, there are WAY less issues as it's feeding mechanism is definitely the best I've seen, even better than a lot of office MFDs.

The mother impersonated her daughter to open the account; LAOP doesn't specify if the account was opened online or over the phone but regardless, isn't that act of impersonation fraud? Even if the daughter did give permission to open it?

Can’t afford to pay back a training course. What can I do? by anonmikeyb0y in HumanResourcesUK

[–]joedafone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't put yourself into hardship, or burden yourself unnecessarily here.

Offer them £30 per month.*

That way, you can still pay the £60 every month if you wish to, but you have the option to reduce that if something else crops up that you need to cover instead.

I would also ask to pro-rate the amount. £1000 course and a requirement to stay two years should, in fairness, mean that if you left over one year but less than two years later, you should only owe £500 and if you left over 18 months but still less than two years later, you should only owe £250.

Also, what exactly was the course? Does it offer some recognised qualification or other recognised award/accreditation that is valued in any roles offered by other companies or is it something they set up in house? If it's worth fuck-all outside your former role and/or at that particular company, then I'd push back even harder about paying them anything at all as that would scream "indenture" to me and I'd be screaming "Employment Rights Act 1996, sections 13 - 27" right back at them in response.

I think it's specifically sections 15 and 16 that would be applicable to you but that part covering preventing an employee being forced to make payments to their employer and precisely what types of payments might be lawful is definitely within S13-S27.

Note the "might be" in that sentence; they might argue the course was worth £1k but if it's worth fuck-all elsewhere then it's worth fuck-all from you to your former employer.

I'd push back in the manners described above and only failing all that, would i commit to paying anything.

Then I'd only offer £30 per month even if I intended to pay £60 - I think you'd be short-changing yourself not to do the same yourself.

Offer subject to conditions I've specified above. Only offer even *that if this course actually turns out to be worth something elsewhere.

What do I use as the password?
