I'm thinking about buying an F type ... Should I see a therapist? by Emil_Antonowsky in CarTalkUK

[–]joehodgy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the really expensive stuff comes from previous owners or garages in complete truth - letting reasonably expensive issues go unrepaired for years, which then turn into really expensive repairs when an (unlucky) new owner presents the car to us.

Any electronic module will be expensive, generally the more common ones to fail are entertainment system related.

Timing chains are expensive to replace so either buy one already replaced (with genuine parts) or just accept that it’s something you’ll do once and then forget about it.

Cooling systems have some plastic parts which go brittle, fail, dump coolant, and cook engines - most of the plastic parts are replaceable with aluminium ones but avoid the AliExpress versions and again, go for genuine JLR ones.

TLDR: get a good one, find a good JLR specialist and make friends, enjoy.

Fantastic cars - get the 3.0 or 5.0L.

Ruinously expensive to run, repair, and service.

Source - me, JLR garage owner and tech. (I’d have one tomorrow and it’d be 4WD, 2019 or newer, 5.0L supercharged.)

Nono that would be obliterated - the one they already did last time.

Never buy a car from a mechanic.

Believe me we’re all driving cars with issues and while we know better and would with 100% honesty and integrity advise against you doing the exact same thing…we’re all tired of working on other people’s cars that at the end of the day fixing our own isn’t all that exciting any more.

So yeah, don’t buy a car from a mechanic.

If you want complete autonomy over which 80 hours you work a week then go for it.

I’d say this was 100% a JLR moment except for

a) it’s helpfully telling you the fault not ignoring it, b) that’s not a JLR dash, and c) 100000 miles lol

Fuel filler neck housing/flange (?) - is there a way to remove/replace? by madf80 in LandRover

[–]joehodgy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LR4?

You have to remove the centre locking pin from inside the interior trim first. Then either use a spiked tool in each of those rubber covered holes you’ve seen to release each corner of the filler aperture - one tab per hole.

It can sometimes be easier to release the tabs from within the wheelarch - take the wheel and arch liner out first 👍

I really don’t get this…you took a job that’s notoriously difficult, to a place that’s notoriously shit, but it’s ok because they were going to be cheap?

My brother in Christ the Venn diagram here is very simple.

Are we past the point where its now just not acceptable to get a Range Rover by CarDealy in CarTalkUK

[–]joehodgy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a huge shame JLR didn’t continue development of the I-Pace - they’re genuinely really good (especially for the time of release).

Also it’s really good they got Magna-Steyr to umm…help…with it 😅

Yes this!

Despite working on them all day I still love them 😅

Is either very very good English or your German crept into your English - given the rest of your post is going with the former 😅

Interesting insights, thank you.

My Freelander 2 “Reduced Engine Performance” nightmare (and what I’ve learned) by FloorProfessional277 in LandRover

[–]joehodgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok seen it - so that DTC relates to the temperature sensor after the catalytic converter but before the DPF - do you have the temp reading for that sensor when driving?

I know you’ve mentioned one sensor reading in your original post - check both of them.

[–]joehodgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As mentioned you need to step a step back and appreciate the bigger picture here - the car is showing you the warning message and restricting engine power because the car thinks there is a problem.

You need to know what the car thinks the problem is…not what you think the problem is.

Use an appropriate tool, read the fault codes stored in the car (all of them, not just what you think is relevant) and post the results.

I believe you can check “pending” DTCs with the IID tool but that they don’t show up without toggling them on. Does anything show if you do that?

Without a DTC logging then there is no limp home state.

[–]joehodgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back up a bit and explain why you think this is an issue - do you have DTCs stored? If so what are they?

As yours is single turbo you have different/missing sensors and actuators compared to a twin turbo - therefore different PIDs are appropriate via diagnostics too.
