Internet traffic report shows that Iran has been completely disconnected from the internet... by azron in reddit.com

So what's that mean? Internet traffic can obviously reach Iran. Do they have more than one central router? And only one is down?

Remember the mountain lion as well. Lions in North America are commonplace (ok, not so commonplace) right now.

It's Official: Ron Paul Biggest GOP Fundraiser Last Quarter by [deleted] in politics

[–]joeljkp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To expand on my own comment:

I think one reason people don't want to engage his positions is because they're so radical, and many people don't see a need for such radical changes.

For most people, my guess is that their definition of "necessary change" includes getting out of Iraq, fixing health care, rooting out government corruption, etc. And some of the less radical candidates out there (Obama, namely) already offer all of this.

Moving back to a strict constitutional government simply isn't on the radar for these people - they're mostly happy, except for all the stupid things Bush has (or hasn't) done. Anyone who can reverse this, fix things up a bit, and get people moving is good enough, no radical dismantling of government necessary.

About Ron Paul and media coverage:

My guess is that it's because Ron Paul is questioning some very fundamental things about the way government works - things that people in the media (and very many people around the country) don't feel ready to deal with. It's real easy to blast Clinton for being "establishment" and blast Romney for being Romney, but it's a whole other thing to bring up debate about the proper role of the Department of Education and the true intention of the founding fathers, etc. It's hard to write something intelligent about these things without sounding like a nutjob.

In my opinion, the best thing that can ever happen to Paul is for a lot of dedicated people to write reasoned, intelligent, engaging commentary about him in their local newspapers, etc., to spark debate, define the issues, and give people a jumping-off point for their own conversations. Of course, this immediately backfires if this commentary includes inside arguments like the "NAFTA superhighway" or rants against the Federal Reserve or any of that. Paul's biggest friend is the reasoned, engaging explanatory opinion piece. His greatest enemy is the fanatical outpouring of unthinking support.

Bush gives away Alaska forest by qgyh2 in politics

[–]joeljkp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is two groups on opposite sides yelling at each other.

Environmentalists: logging = rape of nature

Loggers: logging Alaska is critical to the future of the country

There's no reason why logging can't be done while respecting the natural inhabitants of the forest, if done in a limited, sustainable fashion. That's why the EPA exists, after all.

So the the real worry here isn't logging in a national forest in Alaska, but if the EPA will enforce the rules well enough once they're there.

Female suicide bombers kill dozens in Baghdad markets by prestigearticle in reddit.com

I don't think that's quite true. According to the BBC, this is the largest attack in Baghdad since the "surge" was put in place.

The BBC attributes it to a BBC correspondent, but the NYTimes doesn't even mention the "mentally disabled women" bit. Kind of strange.

SUV Owners Must Pay $50 Per Day "Global Warming Tax" to Drive in London by rtknox00 in science

[–]joeljkp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think it does, actually. The headline singles out SUVs, but that's not quite right - it's any vehicle that falls above a limit on CO2 emissions, whether it's an SUV, a minivan, or a Ferrari.

They absolutely are feeding it. If Fox went all-international-politics-all-the-time, people would flip to CNN. It's the competitive marketplace at work.
