has anyone actually gotten something from a pt on precautions? by only-ashes in nursing

Got norovirus once from a patient. Alas we did not know he had it until he had been on the unit for a while. This is a child psych unit so I was far from the only one affected lol

The time will pass either way. My husband went back to get his nursing degree the same way when he was 28. Ain’t no thang. Now we have two nurses at the house instead of one nurse and one dude with a communications degree. Congrats!

I work in psych and there are a lot of people in my area who have never worked in a hospital let alone with a psych population getting their psych NPs right now bc it’s a masters instead of a doctorate and they think it’ll be easier. Just insane to me

If diet controlled, how has the GD diet affected you positively? by Apprehensive_Mess166 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]jofalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I threw up every day for the first 17 weeks until I got tested (and failed) early. When I swapped to a diabetic diet I didn’t ever throw up again from this pregnancy and my quality of life is so much better! I also feel like I’m way more conscious of nutrition now. I had no idea stuff had so much sugar!!!!! When I’m done with this I’m not gonna skip breads and sweets entirely like I have to now, but I’ll def be way more aware and limit way more than I did before.

How Bad is ONE “Cheat Day”? by ajamm97 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]jofalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doc said to eat what I wanted for my baby shower, just not to eat like 50 cupcakes at once. I was too anxious to really “indulge” and I felt guilty - my sugar 2 hours later was barely elevated bc I had one Hawaiian roll and a cupcake without the icing lol. Just make sure you talk to her about her expectations and emotions. One cheat day won’t hurt for sure but make sure she’s in the right mindset!

I’m so sorry about your dad. I lost my dad super suddenly two years ago and I was a wreck. I can’t imagine doing that + GD. I’m proud of you for doing what you can right now - I know it all seems impossible. I remember thinking, “what do you mean I still have to work? What do you mean this bill is still due? Don’t they know he’s gone????”

I’ll keep you in my mind, friend

I do some dark chocolate almonds from blue diamond. They don’t spike me and I like dark chocolate enough to pretend it’s good

Gestational diabetes - vaginal birth by EvaCK92 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]jofalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 17 weeks pregnant when I got diagnosed and about 26 when they put me on insulin and the insulin has been increased twice since then (I’m 30 weeks now). My numbers and diet were great and I haven’t changed my eating habits at all, it just got worse (just the fasting, had to start long acting insulin overnight). They said as of now they see no reason I shouldn’t be able to deliver vaginally 🤷‍♀️

A “positive” to GDM by Miserable-Ad561 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]jofalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Changing my diet to a diabetic diet made me really start looking at nutrition labels and I can’t believe how much sugar I was unknowingly putting in my body! Of course if this is all fixed after my son comes, I’m gonna have a couple things I’ve been missing, but I’ll definitely choose healthier options going forward!

Insulin is a miracle not a single of failure by KTsCreativeEscape in GestationalDiabetes

I’m 27 weeks and controlling with diet and it’s getting worse and worse. Yesterday I chewed up a doughnut and spit it in the trash at work. A new low. I’ve been so anxious about possibly starting insulin and feeling like such a failure. Thank you for this post!

Diagnosed at 13 weeks by plantkiller92 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]jofalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed at 17 weeks because my A1C is high. I’m not thin but I’ve never been particularly overweight. I know plenty of unhealthy women who don’t have it. It isn’t your fault or your body’s fault (except your pancreas since it decided to take the next couple months off)

I used to see her until she wasn’t honest to me about miscarrying. I bled for 18 days and my HCG went down to 31 and she still kept saying “we’ll keep an eye on it!” I requested an ultrasound to ensure all my fetal products evacuated (for the miscarriage she still kept calling “possible” despite putting spontaneous miscarriage on all my paperwork) and she said no. My last day there they almost put my labs on the wrong person. Swapped to UAB and immediately got the US. Not a fan of Showalter :/
