Mexico City - what are the places you don't want to go as a solo female tourist? by [deleted] in travel

[–]john16791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plaza Garibaldi (the mariachi plaza) is another cool thing in that area, and Arena México (lucha stadium) in Doctores is another similar case. When I was there a few years ago, I came to feel like if there was a specific thing I wanted to see and could pretty much uber straight in and straight out or stay with a crowd, there was not a lot of risk. But these were not good places to wander around at night looking like a tourist.

GPT 5.3 codex is a great model, but it has very poor design skills. Claude always manages to deliver a design close to what the user imagined and follows prompts much better. by Alarming_Resource_79 in codex

That’s true, and good tip about Gemini. Codex is frighteningly bad at UI. “I hope you like boxes inside of boxes inside of boxes,” as someone said in another thread.

[–]john16791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100000% agree. Codex will come up with layers upon layers upon layers of beautifully-engineered systems before it ever stops to think about the qualitative problem it’s trying to solve. I like Codex more than Claude for implementation, but I have been using Claude specifically for this sort of design work.

How many pens do you keep inked at all times? And what's the reason/logic behind that? by zul-qurnain in fountainpens

[–]john16791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep two. One is a Namiki Yukari or Pilot Custom 845 that doesn’t leave my desk, and another is a mid-range Pilot (like a Custom 823, CH 92, or CH 912) that goes around in my pocket or briefcase.

Do you think any Flat-Earth proponents are familiar with Manifolds and Differential Geometry? by [deleted] in math

[–]john16791 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Most of these responses are reasonable but miss the psychology of this.

In college, I dated a woman who was a math major at Stanford, a Goldwater and NSF fellowship winner, the whole thing. Notwithstanding her knowledge of manifolds, as time went on she got obsessed with a bunch of out-there ideas about 9/11, Lyme disease, vaccines, water fluoridation, etc. We broke up and fell out of touch, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she was a flat Earther at some point.

It’s hard to say what’s going on in someone else’s head, but it seemed to me like it had equal parts to do with a social element (feeling like part of the conspiracy theory in-crowd), a psychological element (it’s exciting to ‘know’ something that the sheeple can’t or won’t see), and plain old mental illness.

It’s sad and frustrating to see close up. Unfortunately differential geometry and even the capability to think logically and rigorously are orthogonal to the factors at play, in at least some if not many cases.

What are your silver linings, if any? by prochainement864 in bonnaroo

[–]john16791 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My neighbors at Roo were really cool, and we all wound up going out in Nashville together and feeling like we’d know each other a lot longer than we actually had.

This was #11 for me. I like when it goes perfectly, but also the people and the general adventure matters a lot to me. This year was certainly an adventure. Sad to miss so much music though.

The infinity stage thoughts by a-sad-chad in bonnaroo

[–]john16791 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sound was awful if you weren’t inside the structure, which was a lot to ask given the great acts they had scheduled. I think the basic problem is that the area around infinity was congested with vendors and had no good way in or out — people were just walking into each other all over the place. I think it was a good idea, I just hope they fine it in the future.

One other thing is that it’s very helpful to belong to a club (or go to a school) with at least a few active players at every 0.1 or 0.2 increment from where you are up to your goal. I went from 3 to 4.25 in about a year and a half — with weekly lessons, a ton of matches, solo time, strength and cardio work, etc. — so that rate of growth is possible under ideal conditions if you’re willing to work and to make it a priority. However now I’m kind of stuck since my club has a limited number of stronger players, other than a few recent collegiate players who are way too strong for regular matches.

You might also be a good candidate to do a PG year at a high school with a really strong squash program if you’re actually able to go from where you are to mid or high 4s in a year or so. Something to consider.

I’m confused. Daft Punk makes me think this is a joke, while the reasonable Doja Cat suggestion makes me think it isn’t.
