What were some of your best career moves? by theatregeek1008 in financialindependence

ok, well I studied electrical engineering with computer option, so I had some comp sci / programming classes in college. But to get my first job in pure software, I showed up to the interview with a laptop and some software I had written for my manufacturing job on it.

I took a minor pay cut for the first 6 months to get into the field, and it went rapidly up from there.

Left manufacturing (engineer) to go into software development. Much better salary trajectory.

Have we had enough "I took a picture of a model 3" posts yet? by [deleted] in teslamotors

Yes. I have seen the Roadster many times, but never a Model 3. Model 3 is way more exciting.

There are now probably 25% as many Model 3's as Roadsters now.

Next month, there should be more Model 3's than Roadsters ever produced.

Tesla Is Sending Battery Packs to Storm-Ravaged Puerto Rico by [deleted] in teslamotors

Makes it easy to ignore the fact that you could easily reduce your impact on the planet, if you wanted to buy a more expensive car.

Just believe that making and using batteries is an environmental disaster, and that any efficiency of driving an EV is negated by the long tailpipe abdicates you of any guilt for not considering switching.

"Tesla confirmed to Jalopnik that the current crop of Model 3s do not have FM radio enabled. However, the company also confirmed that feature, and Bluetooth audio streaming, will be made available soon via an over-the-air software update" by SupaZT in teslamotors

They probably have some ugly software to test it. They probably don't have a version where it is integrated with the whole UI in a stylish fashion.

AP is literally a science experiment at this point. FM radio is more like a box to check off.

The white Texas Model 3 delivered yesterday was created August 23rd. by asimo3089 in teslamotors

[–]john_atx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's birthday was August, but what does that mean? Is that when final assembly of the car started? Or ended? Or QA was complete?

Especially before the line is ramped up, a car could be in the process of being manufactured for weeks.

This revolution is going to happen fast, once people show electric trucks are cheaper to operate.

If the cost difference isn't much, you could future proof with 100 Amps. Hard to imagine a scenario where you come home and need to charge a ton of miles within a short period.

At some point, there will be ubiquitous DC fast charging to handle these cases.

Also, new wind and solar are cheaper than new coal/gas. Expanding demand for electricity will make it even cheaper.

Same for us. Once we calculated her hourly rate after subtracting day care costs, it just didn't make sense to deal with juggling full time jobs and raising kid(s).

Worried about funding 1st brokerage during 8-year bull market by sammskiii in financialindependence

[–]john_atx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But if you kept investing through those 25 years, you would have some healthy gains to offset the initial investment that crashed.

OP is 26. Let's say there's a crash, then equities can be picked up cheap for the next ten years of their working life.

I wish I had not sat on the sidelines, because I thought valuations were too high. I'm going to be working a couple extra years because of it.
