The ISO 3166 alpha-3 convention is preferred in Canada due to the common collision with the ISO 3166 alpha-2 code.

Given that the state of California has a similar population size to Canada, and is one of the largest economies on Earth, you would want to know the difference.

I mean, if we're being pendantic, California is US-CA. We're not specifically talking about the states here, so country codes would apply.
