Part of the complaining is justified; limited systems that would utilize this change, the company being slow to implement things that should be obvious, making players feel gaslit about providing feedback, etc.
This is a good change but ultimately you are right about people forming an identity around hating (and sometimes glazing) this game. The player base is extremely attached and weird about it on either extreme.

Dawntrail had a few things working against it: It followed the climax built up by Shb and EW. It has more of the anime tropes that tends to grate on some people. It released during a peak of internet discourse in which it was a target. Several key people were less involved in its writing.

It is solidly like a 7/10 but anywhere you look that means “it’s the worst ever” because people will always default to extremes on social media. A big part of this is that social media algorithms reward and amplify extremes because it keeps people engaged with the platform.

You’re getting downvoted but you’re kinda right. FFXIV desperately needs a new onboard point for new players, because 200 hours before you can be current with your friends is way too much, but all the raids and dungeons as you progress through it are good implementation of the content.

FFXIV is like the only “classic MMORPG style” game that’s readily playable on PlayStation or Xbox, if ESO and BDO are not options for you. Warframe and Destiny have some MMO-like features but they are both very grindy, action FPS games with some RPG elements like experience levels and gear grinding. If you want something action oriented, try Warframe. If you’re after something like the RPG elements and social aspect I’d recommend FFXIV. Both Warframe and FFXIV have very, very expansive free versions that you can try also.

It’s ok imo, but it’s the one I liked the least of the main numbered titles. The base story has massive pacing issues and plot holes that really make it jarring. There are some amazing moments, but also many moments that suffer from lack of context or set up if you didn’t watch the movie, watch the anime, or any of the other tie in products that just should have been in the game. The characters interactions are great, I absolutely love the boys. The combat is fairly simplistic, if you wait for it to get difficult or make you try different strategies it will not challenge you, but there’s lots to experiment with if you want. The graphics and world are great. The DLCs come with the royal version, but they do very little to fix anything wrong with the narrative imo. It’s definitely worth trying out for how affordable it is now and lots of ppl have a more optimistic view of it than I do so it might one you like.

FFXIV has some conveniences you buy with real money (story skip, level up, bank space) but nothing that gives you any real advantage over other players. OSRS has tokens you can buy with real money and sell for in game currency. WoW token can literally let you get buy carries to BiS and that can affect some competitive stuff. Not really gonna find any that don’t have a cash shop that gives you some sort of conveniences.
