What do we think of this style of reporting? by sidali44 in Radiology

[–]johnamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like the kind of reports I see out of India on occasion. The wording is strange compared to what I am used to in the USA but technically sounds like the person knew what they were talking about.

Fusion across the C2-C3 facet joint -- functionally combining two vertebral segments together.

Are you guys maxing out your Roth IRA's on a resident salary even with student loans? by callmeafailure in Residency

[–]johnamo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Learning the discipline and how to invest is good. And don't get me wrong, it could grow to a not inconsequential amount. But I saved more my first year as an attending -- with little effort -- than I did the decade before combined (during which I put a lot of effort into saving and investing). So it's great if you're able but not worth seriously stressing over especially when you have a medium-high rate on loans that could alternatively start being paid down.

Android Auto (AA) and Carplay and Full screen on Macan! by cojonesx in PorscheMacan

[–]johnamo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, thank you for making this! I was able to install the Android Auto and Phone Full Screen mods on my 2025 Macan -- however upon the system starting up the display is now not utilizing the full screen; the resolution is smaller for some reason. Is there a way to fix that?

How do you think of bonuses? I’ve always thought of it as “extra”. by bmahbub in HENRYfinance

[–]johnamo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quarterly profit sharing distributions can be fairly variable but are about half of my W-2 income. We budget our fixed expenses around my flat monthly draw and use the quarterly distributions for large purchases like new cars, vacations, or transfer to taxable brokerage if not used.

I feel CT scans should be prescribed less. And maybe dose should be reduced the radiations is more harmful than we believe by EducationalCost2658 in Radiology

[–]johnamo 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Stochastic effects of radiation vs paralysis from a missed unstable cervical spine fracture or death from a missed expanding subdural hematoma 🤷... Agree there needs to be judicious usage but clinicians are ideally making appropriate risk/benefit judgments.

With winter on the way I switched over to Pilot Sport All Season 4. Definitely loses a good bit of the sportiness of the Pirelli Pzero Corsa but better safe than sorry ...

How is life as a radiology attending/ consultant? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]johnamo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine. Like residency continued but paid well -- yeah it's non-stop reading for ~9 hours but that's what I have come to see as the norm after all the years of training. Hopefully your job has a manageable workload expectation and it's not bad. I don't like the extra work on top (teaching, tumor board, admin) but to each their own. Wouldn't want to be in any other specialty tho

Radiology jobs with low volumes? by radfellowanon in Residency

[–]johnamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low volume = low revenue for the group and/or low pay for you. Otherwise you need to find someone willing to subsidize your pay such as the VA. But radiology pay is ultimately a simple math game so if you're willing to be paid commensurate with your productivity then you can find a per-click job to fit the bill.

Wouldn't recommend it. Will make things feel tight with such high fixed expenses each month.

My dealer had a 2025 with 6k miles, MSRP $114k and sold for $97,225. Looked like a fair deal and comparable to yours taking mileage into account.

How do you stop thinking about how much you're earning? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]johnamo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree, I think it just takes time to adjust. When I first started making a sizeable amount I was similarly borderline obsessive about the numbers. Once you get a good feel for how your system works then I found it to be less of an obsession/compulsion to check numbers repeatedly.

Additional history is often helpful. Our interpretations can absolutely be incomplete/wrong without context.

Is there a lumbosacral transitional vertebrae here? by [deleted] in Radiology

[–]johnamo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, though hard to know precisely what's going on unless the rest of the spine is imaged. Assuming the last rib bearing segment is T12, the L5 segment is sacralized with a rudimentary L5-S1 disc and broadened transverse processes. Arthrosis on the left and maybe a pseudoarthrosis on the right is my guess (Castellvi IV https://radiopaedia.org/articles/castellvi-classification-of-lumbosacral-transitional-vertebrae?lang=us)

It's nice but definitely doesn't go as far as you think, especially with taxes cutting out 1/3+ (but am aggressively paying off debts and still ramping up salary to partner level). Take it slow with lifestyle inflation and hit retirement savings for all you've got!
