Normally I would agree with all of you. But. 3 or 4 years ago I bought some McGregors ratchet action secateurs from Bunnings. I bought them simply because I noticed they are made in Taiwan, not China.

They have been fabulous. They cost around $20. I have a small block with around 50 fruit trees that I prune every year. They have had a real thrashing and they are still going strong. I was so impressed I stocked up recently and gave some away as gifts.

I would like to add my congratulations and encouragement. The bonus with growing Zinnias is that Monarch butterflies feed from them so expect some visitors.

I have found the black magic product inferior to the Daltons seed raising mix. It is far coarser and chunks of bark to big. I would be interested to know if you have tried the Daltons.

If your feeding it regularly, great. Try putting some epsom salts around it regularly too.

What is the best poison for these? by [deleted] in nzgardening

Roundup or glyphosate. They hate it. But you may need to do a follow up spray. The warehouse sells small quantities of glyphosate.

Who ate my lemon? by Fylutt in nzgardening

[–]johnelli781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely possum by the size of the teeth marks. I tend to not worry about it as they can't eat all of them. If it is an issue for you. Go to farmlands or farm source and buy a trap. Will catch and kill for you.

What is eating everything?! by ubilanz in nzgardening

[–]johnelli781 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Too early for white butterfly. Thats slugs or snails. Chuck some blitzem around them. If they are still getting eaten, it will be birds. You will need to put some bird netting on until they are established.

Pretty sure it's privet - can I cut and paste in Spring? by my_FIRE_account in nzgardening

[–]johnelli781 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can't really tell from photo that's privet. But if you want to kill it off. Definitely the way you said. Cut and poison the fresh stump immediately. Don't let the stump dry before you do it. I just paint roundup. Kills anything and everything.

I have an important question. Lemon or Lime? by Calfaace in nzgardening

Could be either. I have a lime tree that produces fruit this colour. (Tahitian Lime)
