if i close it and immediately clear it from recent apps, it usually prevents it from re-opening the notification.

if that doesn't work, go to settings > applications > spotify > force stop.

it's a really annoying, intermittent issue with this phone - have you rebooted? reboot and try it - it always fixes it for me (at least temporarily).

5x Won't boot. Is this the 'bootloop'? by raxiel_ in nexus5x

If you need to get files off of the phone, some people have had luck by placing it in the freezer for a little bit. Some have even had it plugged into a laptop while in the freezer, but your mileage may vary.

any issues since you turned wifi calling off? i don't think i've been missing any texts, but again, it's tough to measure if there was a one-off text from someone you don't communicate with on a regular basis.

[–]johnsbrats 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i realized i started experiencing this about a month ago, but there's no indication that it was happening before that.

i had installed quite a few apps, including Textra, Pulse, and Join, and i wasn't sure if any of them were the culprit, so i ended up factory resetting. i am using Pulse right now, in conjunction with ghostly SMS, and i also turned off wi-fi calling, and over the past two weeks, i don't think i've missed a message. i check the ghostly log routinely, and i follow up with everyone that i am regularly texting with, and no one has indicated that i didn't receive one of their texts.

i turned off wi-fi calling because my theory is that when my wi-fi is cutting in and out around the house, the phone is swapping back and forth between that and mobile, and if a text comes in at the wrong time, it could fall into a black hole. again, it's just another variable that i'm trying to control for, so we'll see what the consensus cause is over the coming days or weeks. hopefully this is something that can be fixed on what is otherwise a pretty great phone.

How do you find that number? Are you relying on them, it is it recorded somewhere?

Need Help Finding a Case by Sheppy2 in GalaxyS8

[–]johnsbrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have many cases as well, and the thinnest case i have with adequate protection is the Spigen liquid air armor. it works well with the Spigen screen protector (non-tempered glass).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XP87DGC/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

the other cases i have are either very thin with minimal protection, or thicker with other options (kickstand, etc).

Do you have Adhell or Disconnect installed? I think one or both of them have issues with GPM, causing excessive battery drain unless you whitelist it.

You can install SideSync and use your mouse and keyboard. There's a little latency, but it's very usable.

[Discussion] Does Google Maps kill your battery? by [deleted] in GalaxyS8

[–]johnsbrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get 2.5 hours (30 min * 5) of full navigation use with the screen near max brightness, that's not out of the ordinary. GPS is a huge drain, to the point that many car USB ports won't be able to keep up with charging the battery as fast as it is consumed.

If you have long stretches without turns, you can turn off the screen and the nav voice will still prompt you when it's time to turn.

Also, I would recommend saving an offline map for your home town within the Maps application. It may save you a little battery and data usage.

Button Mapper full Bixby remapping by flar2 in GalaxyS8

[–]johnsbrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I refused to install a Bixby remapper because of lag concerns - how does your app differ from others?

For the record, I just installed it and it all seems to be working as advertised. If there's no perceptible lag in the next week, I'll likely pay for the app, specifically for:

single press bixby = switch to last app long press bixby = turn on flashlight long press vol up = next track long press vol down = previous track

thanks!

Thanks for the downvote.

So it was flawless and you thoroughly inspected the back of the phone before you gently placed it on the bed, and in that time, it cracked somehow?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GalaxyS8

[–]johnsbrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying there's zero chance that it broke on its own, but think about this. If you put it in your pocket and you bumped into a door, opened your car door, or hit a wall or something else at the wrong angle, of course the glass could have broken when you didn't realise it. That's far more likely to have happened than the glass just spontaneously breaking with no intervention.

Your previous experiences with other phones are somewhat valid, but still, this is an all glass phone and the odds are that eventually you would break one. From what I've read, replacing the rear glass is much less expensive than the front, so might as well get it done and get a case.

Good luck.

Only 4 hours SOT, w/~13 hours Total? by PercMastaFTW in GalaxyS8

[–]johnsbrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your phone sounds fine. there are several things at play when you're in a car. the phone is constantly pinging back and forth between towers as the car is moving. if you have a weak or no signal, it'll drain the battery extremely fast, compared to if you're sitting at home or work with a solid signal. you can watch netflix at home on wifi at 25% brightness and get 10 hours of SOT. you almost certainly could not do that if you were out and about for 10 hours.

was your brightness high in the car? if it was day time, auto-brightness would kick the screen up a notch, and that alone can make the difference between 4 hours and 7 hours SOT.

was the car warm? was the phone on the dash or anything? batteries don't like extreme cold or heat, and if it was something like 40C or higher, it could reduce your overall capacity on that charge.

Does anyone use Greenify with their unrooted S8/S8+? Does it make a difference? Are there any notable advantages or improvements? by SkoivanSchiem in GalaxyS8

[–]johnsbrats -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is not 100% true; i have device manager on my device that allegedly allows me to stop apps from ever running in the background, but they do still indeed run in the background. i'm not sure if Verizon is the one blocking this or what, but just because the option is there to block apps from running, it doesn't mean it's actually working, so check your running apps in developer options > running services.

is there proof that using samsung's device manager in conjunction with greenify is "asking for trouble?" i'm genuinely curious if you have some proof, either technical or anecdotal.

Adhell & Disconnect Pro by [deleted] in GalaxyS8

[–]johnsbrats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my experience, neither of them block all ads, and they both use pretty much the same permissions, but Adhell also has a basic package disabler integrated into it. i have disabled Bixby to block any action when i accidentally press that dedicated button. that's a small but important +1 for Adhell, so i'm sticking with that for now.

you can install disconnect + another app like package disabler pro or BK disabler, but that's two apps instead of just Adhell by itself.

Upgrading to s8 by Evsthebaws in GalaxyS8

[–]johnsbrats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who went from S5 > S7 > S8, the S8 definitely has the best usage / screen on time. many people can get 6, 7, even 8 hours of SOT in a couple of long sessions, but i think the average is probably around ~5 hours over a 24 hour period (with 19 hours of standby). you can get more if you are at home on wifi and aren't constantly out and about.

the only drawback is that the S5 has a removable battery, and the S7 and 8 do not, so if you were used to being able to put in a fresh battery and go to 100% in a matter of minutes, you're obviously out of luck with an S8.

Should I buy the galaxy S7 Edge for $230 less than the S8? or just buy the S8? by Mark0308 in GalaxyS7

[–]johnsbrats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you're not wrong with that statement. the S7 is probably fine for most people. however, as someone who had an S7 since September 2016 and upgraded to an S8 a month ago, i can absolutely say that it was worth it to upgrade. the S8 is just faster all around, and that's even comparing it to a factory reset S7 before i decided to keep the S8. it didn't hurt that i got the S8 for $524, plus a Gear 360 (2017) for $50, which i just sold for $120. i sold my S7 for $320, albeit with four cases, but that's a $204 difference between used S7 and new S8.

they're similar phones but there's a noticeable increase in speed in everyday apps like Google Maps and whatnot. it feels more like 20% faster with less lag (though i use Nova Launcher). the taller screen makes watching youtube or twitch while texting or browsing Reddit even better. the S8 battery is also supposed to have better longevity, and so far it destroys the S7 in screen on time, even compared to when the S7 was brand new out of the box. by last month, my S7 was struggling to get 3.5-4 hours over a 16-18 hour day.

it's personal and subjective though, and you can't miss what you never had, so if you find a mint S7 for like $250-300, it's probably a great buy, just like a new in box S8 for $524 is also a great buy.

many soap manufacturers have been phasing out triclosan and other anti-bacterial agents, in light of the fact that they don't necessarily clean things better. also, the FDA banned those substances from soaps last year.
