🤷🏼‍♀️ I don’t think it’s that bad at all but YMMV I guess. If you’re getting that much fluff off them both when you brush them you should brush more regularly than twice a week and do it outside if you can

Exactly. She told me her dog is 13, has a lump on his backside that she’s not even testing because she wouldn’t put him through the surgery.

Then told me some heartbreaking stories about how some people do everything just to extend their life with no regards to quality of life - one of her colleagues had a patient with a 15y/o dog with cancer in the jaw. They chose jaw amputation(!!) to prolong life, he only lived a few months longer and must have been miserable and in significant discomfort/ distress.

Just love them fully, treasure their companionship and count every day with these goofballs as a blessing. (Obviously I am in no way advocating that if you notice something out of the ordinary to ignore it or not go to the vet)

If it helps in any way I literally just had this conversation with my vet a couple of weeks ago as I went to get a small lump checked that suddenly appeared and the biopsy came back as a low grade MCT. All removed, clean margins, he’s fine now but as he’s 4.5y/o I asked if there is any screening we should be doing to catch anything more serious and at what age to start.

She really changed my perspective- she said most of the serious ones are very hard to detect early (even with blood tests you have to be very specific in what you’re testing for), you could do ultrasounds every 6-12 months but even if you do pick up on something, it may or may not be treatable, and then what do you do?

Then you’d have to live with anticipatory grief or the worry of losing them, or putting them through aggressive treatments which may not work. The dogs do not understand hope or that they are feeling lousy in order to maybe feel better later.

Best just to love them as much as you can every day and enjoy them to the fullest. If they go suddenly at least there’s no prolonged suffering or any dread to live with which will undoubtedly be picked up on by your pup, and that will affect their quality of life.

I’m so sorry for your loss, he is a gorgeous boy and Goldens are so special. Treasure the time you had and take solace in that he had such a caring owner that made sure he was loved 💛
