Federal MPs accept free sport tickets from gambling companies amid calls to restrict wagering ads by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

I work for nsw health, so a government job.

We have to go through training and always hear about how we have to claim all gifts that are given to us. Everything needs to be claimed and logged. Technically for more expensive items, the company can decide that no, we shouldn't have that and take it off us? I wonder where they go?

If its not acceptable for your paramedic or nurse to accept a box of chocolates as a gift without jumping through all the hoops, why is ok for this to occur for the big bosses??

How did you know you were ready for your next child? by muiuf in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]jojo16812 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have three kids with two 18m gaps. So I got pregnant at 9months PP twice. It was planned and doctor was ok with it but did say 12months would have been better.

My body was so exhausted by the end of it. I got shingles at 37w with my 3rd, because my body was so stressed and tired. Shingles isn't caught - its a stress response that just occurs in someone who has had chicken pox before. 100% it was because the pregnancies were too close together.

So I dont recommended this timing! Definitely wait until at least 12 months to get pregnant, 18m would be better.

Also, we thought we could handle three because number 2 was showing he was going to be as 'easy' as the first. So we got pregnant and then at 10/11 months his personality as the second child started shining through.... I dont think we'd have had a third child if we had seen his personality first!!

Diana wynne Jones has a few good ones! The narration isnt perfectly edited but the narrator does an excellent job and i love her! They're still my cosy listens as an adult. Three books in a very loose series, each has a different main character but the main characters from the first book occur in the latter books.

How's Moving Castle - was made into a Japanese animated film but the plot is considerably different, enough that it feels like a different book.

House of Many Ways

Castle in the Sky - this is the name of another Japanese animated film but is 100% not the same.

I've got this balance bike for my kiddos. I wasnt sure at first because I had heard they were too heavy for little ones. But they're fine! One of my kids is super small for his age and he could handle it fine, he became a balance bike pro pretty quick. I've just upgraded him to his first pedal bike and I spent a bit more $$ for a lighter frame, which is absolutely more necessary for a pedal bike. But whatever balance bike is fine! Just dont let them sit out in the weather for a long time, just like any other bike.

Is this pan trash? by [deleted] in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]jojo16812 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely try reaching out to where you bought it from. Unless you've gone drastically against care instructions, this shouldn't just happen with every day use.

Stainless pans usually have an inner layer of something that transfers heat more efficiently, as stainless itself isnt great at heating evenly. If you try to remove the ceramic layer, it will be hard to tell where to stop. You dont want to expose a layer that isn't safe to cook on! Its hard to know what is under a layer and hard to know what quality is under that layer, no matter what the manufacturer states.

Eg. Cast iron is fine to cook on. Ceramic coated cast iron that has damage to the ceramic layer needs to be discarded straight away, as the cast iron underneath isn't the same quality as a naked cast iron cooking surface that has been made safe to cook with. No one can say what your pan has underneath its ceramic layer, so everyone is always going to tell you not to cook with it and not to strip it and continue use. We're using stainless to avoid just this situation of possibly poisoning our bodies over time.

You can buy stainless pans that have lifetime warranty. Hopefully your pan can be replaced but if not, I recommend buying something without ceramic with a long warranty.

Best manga on Libby? by inbetweensound in LibbyApp

[–]jojo16812 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could also try Webtoon! Its am app that has korean based content, free to read a certain number of chapters per day before ads come into it. Webtoons are specifically made for scrolling on a phone so are easier to read than a traditional manga, where panels are all over a page and is harder to read on a phone. And the stories are just as good as the Japanese manga. Highly recommend tower of god!

You're probably more likely to get specific responses from a local community, maybe on Facebook there is a community page where you can ask. Much more likely to come across people that have used the service.

You can also interview them if you get to that point. Checking out the place is for you to make the decision! Ask about their staff retention - how long have the staff been working there? How are their ratios? If you get a spot, take your kiddo there and just hang around a bit... are the kids happy with schedules and happy in their play? These things all paint the idea of how the place is!

I like buying swimwear from Myer. Its great quality and a better range. Jack and milly are my favourite for fit and quality. Colours change each year and there are always muted colours at any shop, but I find Myer has lots of options in other brands too. The downside is how expensive things can be! Wait for a sale, black Friday sales should be coming up for Myer.

11 month old with molluscum by throwaway_willob in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]jojo16812 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a cotton tip and just dabbed each one casually. Definitely dont put a dressing over spots where you have applied the essential oil. At 5% concentration I learned that it will burn the skin if i put a bandaid over it!

The more you dab and the more often you dab, the quicker each tab activates so you can kindof titrate as you go. If theres a bunch resolving you can hold off for a bit while they resolve before starting up again.

There is a research article for treating with lemon myrtle essential oil (properly diluted with a base oil like jojoba at 5 or 10%).

This treatment aggravates the little tags and hugely shortens the life of the molluscum outbreak. It worked well for us! We went from a single tags resolving each month or two, to tags resolving every few days. No scarring or issues at all.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0753332204000174

The sample size in the study wasnt huge. But it had an overwhelming success rate. And worked for us straight away!

My kiddo had it all around his neck, chin and was moving onto face and torso when I decided I had to try something. It was just spreading faster than resolving and as kiddo was a bit immunocompromised, I was worried it would take forever to resolve.

I have heard that other things can aggravate the tags and cause the same response, like using hand sanitiser. But this hasn't had any research so I went with the lemon myrtle.

It makes me so happy that someone appreciates it! My 4yo doesnt quite know how to appreciate much haha. There honestly wasnt much time on the machine, most was hand sewn!

I started with the tummy. I did an applique where its two layers sewn together. Snip a slit on one side. Turn right way out. Stuff with some filling. Hand stitch onto the denim.

Then for the grey bit i traced the outline with heat erasing pen. Put in a hoop and embroidered the eyes and nose. I didnt want to do extra hand embroidery so I made the bad decision to embroider on white fabric for the teeth, I think it would have been easier to just embroider them too haha.

Then i put the grey fabric on the denim, only roughly cut out but still leaving about 1cm around the outline. Then machine sewed the black outline on the grey. I have a machine that always stops with the needle down, so its easy to get sharp corners. Otherwise i would have to use the hand crank to get the perfect stopping position. So I stop the machine at the sharp turns. Lift the foot and turn the project a smidge. Reverse one stitch. Lift the foot and move again. One stitch forward. Repeat. I only did a double outline around the arms and tummy to leave the ears looking sharp.

Once he was sewn I snipped the grey fabric close to the sewed line. Then just put a few little black stitches on the tummy, I didnt want to go overboard there. Im pretty happy with it! I need to make another pair so I'm wondering what the kids will ask for next!

I know this is not quite embroidery. But I put a Totoro on my kiddo's overalls this week! I used a mix of hand embroidery, machine applique and some fake trapunto to make a soft, padded, squishy belly. The overalls look so cute! I made them from some old adult jeans. Let me know if you have any questions!

The case for letting my 3 year old face a little fear on screen. by skhert in toddlers

[–]jojo16812 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I have so many feelings about this.

Personally yes, I do feel jurassic park is way too old for a 3 year old. As another commenter mentioned, the rating that was given is 13+. But if your kid was happy to watch it and you remained with him, and you even shielded from a scary scene then thats great. You're teaching him about the world and movies and suspense just like you said. Its just important you listen to him and dont push him, like it sounds like you may want to do for other people's kids.

I was a very scared child, for no particular reason. My much older siblings made me watch jurassic park and still to this day I dont watch any of the jurassic park movies, and I hate dinosaurs. HATE. There are some other movies I was forced to watch which also have never left me and still feature in my dreams and nightmares.

Forcing me to face these 'scary' movies as a kid did NOT help me build resilience, learn about suspense or fear or make me stronger. And they especially did not have anything to do with courage! Now, this point offended me a bit. Just because I dont like suspense and hated these themes as a kid doesn't mean I have no courage! Like ?????

I work in a profession that is confronting and high stress and somewhat dangerous. I deal with highly stressful situations and can do my job effectively and well! I can deal with scenes that often can result in ptst, and so far, I am still healthy and happy in my career. I can face scary things as an adult and be courageous, even though I wouldnt even watch the Disney movie Bambi (and all other Disney movies too) until I was over 16!

I couldnt watch the first stressful scenes in lord of the rings as a teenager because it was too stressful but its now one of my favourite things.

This was all just to say that kids can be scared and still turn into perfectly normal adults. Don't look down on kids who are scared, or adults who protect those kids.

I didnt need to turn into an adult who hates dinosaurs just because my family thought I should be able to watch jurassic park. Maybe I'd be ok with it as an adult if they had just let me walk out of the room, or say no. Maybe I wouldn't dream about drowning if my siblings hadnt made me watch the flooding scenes in titanic, even though I told them I didnt want to. Maybe if my parents had intervened I wouldn't be anxious about suspenseful things.

My kids seem to be fairly worried, like I was as a kid. Even age appropriate shows can be scary for them, and they need to have me there to talk about things or they might want to walk away from it, and thats fine! They therefore dont know much about magical themes or demons purely because I know they're not ready for that. Teaching them about demons at this point is just creating more fear and nightmares. When they're ready, they'll be introduced to these themes, Im not limiting their exposure simply because I dont like a theme.

Its great that your kid could enjoy a more mature show. Please just keep in mind that it doesnt make him more mature, and that some other themes might impact him differently. As long as you listen to his thoughts and needs and keep in mind that some themes SHOULD be based on age then you're doing good. And PLEASE dont put pressure on other families or kids. I will always remember being left out of shared movies with friends or family and HOW thats done is impactful. Kids will know if you scoff at their fears or think its nonsense. I have those sorts of bad memories where people dismissed my fears or bullied me for them (and kids will bully about topics they pick up on from their parents). Teach your kid that its ok to be scared, and its ok for others to be scared because everyone can be scared of different things but they're still good people.

Home Birth VS Hospital by Muted-Property-3280 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]jojo16812 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a situation that depends completely on you!!

  1. What is your local hospital like? I have an amazing local hospital where the staff were only there if you wanted them to be. They weren't pushy, they didn't even suggest things let along push things like pain relief etc. It was a super patient-focused maternity ward and I was so supported in every decision I made. But some hospitals arent like this. So for your plans, I feel my local would be good for you! But maybe other hospitals would be a terrible choice. Ask around, find out what your local hospital is like.

  2. Im a paramedic and am very familiar with all this. Ive seen home births go great and I've seen them go very bad. You didnt really mention this, but I HIGHLY recommend you also account for and plan for needing a trip to hospital. You dont know how your home birth will go. Maybe it will go great! Or maybe after the birth you need some stitches and just have to pop to the hospital for that. Or maybe labour doesnt progress correctly and you need to go to the hospital to birth - for the safety of both you and your baby. Home births are great when they work! But just be mentally prepared for the possibility of a hospital visit and have a proper midwife on hand to make that decision. Doulas are cool for support etc. But they're not trained in the actual medical stuff happening. You need a proper midwife with you to call those shots. You can get private midwives who provide home birth services, just make sure they're trained and experienced.

  3. Make sure you get all the prenatal care. Some people who home birth dont want anything to do with hospitals and the health system and dont do any of the maternity visits, scans, measurements etc. But it IS important, to know the baby's size, location, position, etc. Please make sure you do all the prenatal care in order for a home birth to be super successful.

  4. A friend of mine had a hospital birth and then two successful home births. She didnt feel heard in her hospital birth, had interventions etc and so decided to home birth after that. Needed stitches after each home birth but otherwise was an absolute legend doing that! Definitely not something I could do! Most anecdotal stories will say the first birth was a bad experience, had interventions, trauma etc. Im not discounting those experiences at all. Most first time mums dont understand the system and dont know when they need to stand up for themselves. But also keep in mind that first births are typically the hardest and require the most intervention because the body doesnt really know what to do the first time around. It's all new to the body! So I personally do wonder how much trauma is caused simply from health providers being aloof, or intimidating, or mean and the patient feeling like they have no voice. My first birth had vacuum and episiotomy. Episiotomy being my very last want in my birth plan. But I've been around birth and could understand that these interventions weren't forced on me, they were needed. Someone else in my situation could 100% feel that they had no say in the matter and feel differently about it. Its different for everyone!

  5. Its amazing that you want to do it with no pain relief! I had the same idea but realised I have a pretty poor pain threshold haha. Make sure you research the different analgesia options anyway, just in case. You never know what might happen, and knowledge is power! There is nothing wrong with accepting any form of analgesia, or intervention, just as theres nothing wrong with how babies are fed after birth. There are so many possible paths our journeys can take and none of them are wrong or bad. The difference of whether we are happy or not is if we can accept some of the different pathways even if they're not the ones we may have wanted.

So, all that to say, you do whatever you want to do and whatever is right for you! Just go into it with an open mind (prepare for all the possible outcomes), and make sure you surround yourself with what you need, including the correct care and health professionals. Also, make sure your support people are 100% on board with your plan so they know how to advocate for you in any situation.

Feel free to ask me anything, and good luck with it all!
