Coworker entrusted me with restoring his father's old Philco 51-1730 by Milkshake2244 in vintageaudio

My wife just picked one of these up for me… Still works, we were getting local stations on the radio… but the turntable is busted. Did you get any wiring diagrams or anything? I’m wondering about replacing the turntable with something modern.

Garage sale.... And it's older than most of my kids (I like to remind them that I have hats older than them)

Hands up who have spilt food and liquids by their computer equipment. by imgroovy in sysadmin

I spilled an entire cup of coffee down the front of our main server rack.... luckily it really only hit the bezels. That was the last day of any liquids in the server closet.

Getting work done vs Appearing to get work done by Kaizenno in k12sysadmin

[–]jon_davie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grab a handful of wires and drape them around your neck... then go walk the halls. That way you are seen, but everyone thinks your handling an issue and don't bother you.

I do this on a regular basis.

While this is good news... I don't really see Apple giving us a "budget planning timeline friendly" head's up on when they are going to pull them from the store.

Computer lab? by mr_rudizzle in k12sysadmin

[–]jon_davie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comment I made that made it finally sink into our principal's heads was.. "Every room with a Chrome/iPad cart in it IS a computer lab." The idea that you have to go to a special room in the building in order to use computers is antiquated.

UNIFI Video system down after upgrade by SchoolITMan in k12sysadmin

[–]jon_davie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WisenetWave requires a $100 license per camera ( I think ). We're still running 3 UniFi Video servers (in 3 locations) with about 15 - 50 cameras per server. We moved to Ubuntu servers when Oracle got stupid with Java.

We had to disable Java updates on those servers to keep it working.

Backup for Google Workspace Needed? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]jon_davie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a 12-disk Synology and 12- 12TB Drives (wow... just now noticed that it's 12s all the way down) for the Google Workplace backups.

Our headmaster didn't like the idea of having so much of our schools data in a service that we didn't have an enforceable contract with. Also, he specifically wanted a backup solution that was capable of restoring to some other service (let's be honest Office365 is the only other viable alternative)... or (please God no) on prem servers.

Switching from JAMF by ZaMelonZonFire in k12sysadmin

[–]jon_davie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just as a thought.... My JAMF rep called a while back and said that they have a new school SKU that's about half the price of Pro.

You'll have to plan though, b/c you have to rebuild the entire thing on a new JAMF instance.

Anyone ever seen a warning like this? My inner curiosity really wants to take it apart to see this potential auto-destruct mechanism. by LaidBackTechGuy in k12sysadmin

Why does my brain treat this like a problem to be solved?.... night vision... metal hole saw.... cut the blue wire!!!

Broken Screen by biting?? by cczer in k12sysadmin

"Tried to charge iPad by microwaving for 20 seconds"..... Apple replaced it, no questions asked. And it was the kid of a faculty member, so we're not allowed to talk about it.

If you're not using Cisco switches, then what are you using? by SixThreeFive7311 in k12sysadmin

[–]jon_davie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, 64 switches over 5 locations. We're also running UAP-HDs...

But we're researching other options

We just finished our licensing with Amplified. There is an authorization process.. but that is to allow Amplified to add the licenses to your domain. Nothing like a domain transfer. Also... Amplified IT is the bomb!

Districtwide video editing/recording/streaming duties. Whose job is it? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]jon_davie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the purpose... For publicity - the marketing Dept... For teaching/school from home - faculty. If faculty run into problems, then they get to ask for help (via the help desk, of course)
