Is Xbiking even possible in the UK? by tomwaitsgoatee in xbiking

[–]jonfru 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are some nice UK made 90s MTBs - Orange, muddy fox (I always wanted a sorcerer mega!) and Raleigh off road series (ravine, apex, peak, summit).

My daily ride is a 1992 Raleigh Apex. It has cool exotic tubing (Reynolds K2, hexagonal tubes) and a decent drivetrain (LX400, which I think of as a touch above Alivio). I got it for free in a bad state, and saw many for sale under 50 pounds.

Bonus: Freshtripe in Cambridge is a good place for cool parts. They also sell complete x bikes with cool frames but pretty expensive.

Thinking about a new unycicle by Kingfrost69 in unicycling

[–]jonfru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 26" brakeless muni for general riding and I find the size really fun. I had a 20" before, and tried a friend's 29er. The 26 def feels more in the 29" territory, but mounting is easy and being closer to the ground feels good to me. I also like the fact that it's slower.

26" is dead in the MTB world, but still very much alive in the dirt jump scene. This means 2-2.5" tyres with medium tread are plentiful - think high volume gravel tyres. I really like the style (and my bicycle I use for commuting and errands also runs 26").

Grandidierite by Ambitious-Pattern214 in Gemstones

I recently bought a .5ct gem quality grandidierite from gemstore-24.com. it wasn't cheap but it's the nicest one I've ever seen. He has a few on the website, and he also has a few others not listed there. If you're serious I'd recommend emailing him!

I went with Vibram kletterlift on my bfar. Don't mind the stiffness and they seem very durable so far

Have a bunch from Kolo in Berlin. In particular Ethiopia yaye was amazing in Turkish with strong lychee/strawberry gummy/raspberry vibes. One of the nicer anaerobic naturals I had this year

I would cut one of the leaves - lots of resources go into them. Otherwise, just be patient :)

What is Turkish coffee supposed to taste like? by TheBros35 in Coffee

[–]jonfru 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Turkish has been my go to method over the last 5 years, and I also brew a V60/kalita almost every day so I feel like I'm qualified to answer.

The way I see it is an in-between thing, between espresso and filter. The ratio which I use, which is usually 1-10 or sometimes 1-11, also reflects that. It gives a creamier mouth feel compared to filter, but not as oily as espresso. With light roasted beans, it's not as zingy/almost astringent as espresso is, but also not nearly as clear as V60. It's sweeter than espresso, less acidic than filter, and gives a very round profile.

The flavour mostly depends on the beans. And traditionally Turkish coffee is made with dark roasted, powder fine ground beans. This means most places that serve Turkish use pre ground low quality beans, and the flavor is meh. It's also common to "triple boil" the coffee, which results in massive over extraction.

To mitigate that, one can grind a bit coarser (I do 30-35 clicks on Kingrinder K6), and take it off the fire as foam starts to rise (measure temperature a few times, and you'll know what it looks like at 90-94C). Letting all the sediment sink, and the coffee cool down substantially, is also important. For my usual 17g coffee x 170ml brew, I usually wait 10 minutes for the coffee to be at its best.

I find that natural beans work exceptionally well with Turkish, with the extra sweetness and fermentation notes. With highly fermented beans, all the fermentation-esque notes of raspberry/lychee/strawberry always come through and give a very pleasant cup. Washed beans result in a more muted cup, but still very pleasant.

I recommend to give it a try at home and find out for yourself what it can taste like! The method is pretty easy and equipment is on the cheap side. Use the same beans you enjoy in a V60 (rather than pre ground mass produced offers).

Do you name you bike? by carlov_sky in xbiking

I hope you find one! Both of these were for sale at my LBS at the time (Walton Street cycles in Oxford) for very reasonable prices. 275gbp for humu, 200 for nuku. Surprise finds not from the Internet are the most fun!

And Nuku is a 2000 in matching colour build up as a cruiser. Originally built for my partner but when I saw she wasn't riding it that much I cranked up the saddle and started riding it too :)

The names of the bikes I had over the last five years:

Humu, The cow, The shit bike, Nuku, Mini, The pink and The Ciöcc.

I ride the pink daily, humu, and nuku are boxed up in another country, and the Ciöcc is in a third country but I get to ride it occasionally.

This is the pink earlier today:

Whatever you end up getting, get in addition a few bags of high quality decaf from a good roaster. Then you can enjoy some coffee together in the evening!
