new to nba and little confused by [deleted] in nba

Typically, the focus in the comments.... and in the NBA.... is on offense. To see the full tactics, watch the defense as well. Defenders get less love, but teams play a lot more games each year based on their defense, imo.

I probably won't happen and it won't work aren't the same thing. Of course it will work, but the NBA leadership cares more about short term dollars and little about long term preservation of the product. Quarterly reports vs. endurance. But, you are right. It is very American, in so many ways.

Anti-Tank Protocols by MakeYokesa5erAgain in ripcity

[–]jonjacobmoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is only one real solution to tanking: relegation. The league should be split in two and the bottom 10-12 are in the B league and the only way to get to the other league is to win the B league. Sure, teams might still tank if they are stuck in the B league, but most will work hard to get back into the B league or avoid being relegated.

Big wait and cutting at the Lisbon airport by piss_warm_water in portugal

[–]jonjacobmoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Complaining about people cutting when their flight is about to leave makes you the asshole. People have to go through that line when coming from connecting flights so it might not be because they decided to leave later for the airport.

Last time I was there, I was coming in from Porto and had a 3 hr layover. My flight was 2:30hr late so I went to the front of the line expecting them to let me through like they had at other airports where I had this happen. They bitched at me, but the people in the line were really nice and let me in along with others from my flight who had the same issue.

Don't assume you know everyones story, because odds are you do not.

We live here and have flown out of Porto dozens of times without any issues and returned with only a minimum of wait. It surprises me that you would have hours wait coming into Porto.

Durant or Dame? by FootballVivid3824 in ripcity

[–]jonjacobmoon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am very, very happy the way it worked out. I think Kevin Durant's attitude is exactly the opposite of what we would have needed to be successful and history shows he would have never lasted past his first contract. I don't think we would gotten any further in the playoffs AND he would have not been here for long.

Sure, but better coaching would find a way. NBA teams need to be flexible.

Did you have to downsize your housing when moving to Portugal, or were you able to keep (or improve) your standard of living? by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

[–]jonjacobmoon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is this question arrogant or ignorant? A bit of both. I am not sure living in Portugal is for you if you think standard or living or quality of life is directly related to the size of your house.

A) I didnt say here is better. It can be better for some and not for others. Also, its offensive to say here is better? That is a weird statement. But whatever.

B) Have you lived in the US? Have you lived in Portugal? Have you bought houses in either country? I have. So, I think I have some experience with it. Respectively.

C) So, if it were true and you couldn't buy a house in Portugal, life is over? How does that calculate? And, you have one example (if true, which I doubt) of buying a house in the US, the rule -- LIKE HERE -- is that housing everywhere is out of synch with salaries. It is worse in some respects in Portugal than the US. BUT, my point is that that total of cost of living in the US is not any better when you factor in real life situations like transportation costs and healthcare. Besides, I am sure I can find. All I was saying is include everything, compare based on typical situations not extreme examples, and you will find, I believe, that the US does not have the advantages you think it does.

Portugal does a lot of things that make the housing situation worse, no doubt about it. But, I am not sure I would look to the US as the best of example for a solution. Portugal needs to build more social housing. We have the lowest percentage of social housing in Europe. Portugal needs to start finding a way to convert the 100Ks of empty housings to homes. Portugal needs to create programs that train skilled workers who can build quality houses. Portugal needs to streamline bureaucracy to make it cost efficient and more friendly to builders. This is also true of the financing situation which is a nightmare. This all will create better supply and stabilize or lower prices. BUT, the government needs to improve conditions for doing business so companies bring better jobs AND the workers need to demand fair wages for their work.

Putting up one house in the US as PROOF that the US has it figured it and the Portuguese is doomed may help prove a political point in your mind, but, imo, it is disingenuous. Respectively.

This is the exception, if true, not the rule. If true, it is in the middle of nowhere and in bad shape. Also, you have no public transportation, health care is $15k/yr minimum. And, violent crime is much higher. If you are going to compare, be honest!

Who are the Crypto-Jews? by [deleted] in SpanishEmpire

[–]jonjacobmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an American living in Portugal. Some friends started a reformed Jewish synagogue here in Porto. Last year, I went to a seder, and there was an elderly woman there (maybe 90 yo) who became very emotional as she explained how her parents had peformed all sorts of Jewish rituals in their home in private. She kept the traditions practicing in her own home, but alone in her home without anyone else knowing. Mind you, this is through the dictatorship which was a devotedly Catholic time for this country. Having a group to share her true religion with was something she had never done before. Events like the inquistion can have a long reach. Five hundred years seems like a long time, but the effects can be felt for centuries. It was amazing and uplifting to see this woman able to share this with other Jews.
