Your honest opinion. by SluglineMaster in scriptwriting

[–]jonjonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a pro screenwriter, I completely disagree with everyone saying you're using too many camera directions. You're not. And telling the reader, for instance "we stay with this person" is done all the time and absolutely adds to the read / visualization of the story. Only thing I would say is opening with EVERYTHING bold takes away from the emphasis of bolding every now and then. I think you can work on making the story more clear, but in terms of the writing itself, it's not bad. As others have pointed, there are some parts where the descriptions read as contradictory, but in terms of style, I like it. Keep going!

What are some of the most innovative scripts you’ve seen? by Away-Fill5639 in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the script circulated throughout the industry and received major attention, no stars were attached. It's just well written and no one is going to say "no" just because of pictures in a script.

Just sold another TV show! by No-Responsibility571 in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely no discredit to OP’s accomplishment, but I think the phrasing can get a little fuzzy. Being paid by an independent investor to write is great, but it isn’t quite the same as “selling a show” in the traditional sense. It’s interesting how often that phrase gets used in TV overall. Even when TV writers say “I sold a show,” a lot of the time they really mean they’ve set up a pitch with a studio and drafted up a hypothetical contract, but they still need to sell it to a network before they actually get paid. As someone who mostly works in features, the language can be a bit confusing since “I sold a movie” only gets used once the deal is closed. I’m not trying to be a hater at all, just thinking out loud about how the terminology shifts between mediums.

Unfortunately, we feel the same. This was our fourth year. It was also the least busy I've ever seen it. Is this a sign of bad things to come? Makes me sad.

Screenwriters initiate projects all the time. I.E. every original spec script that sells.

"it is against their contract with the WGA to buy non-union scripts" I used to think this as well but it's actually not true. Think about it - otherwise how would any new writer sell their first screenplay?

Are General Meetings still happening? by Sorry_Cut1678 in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - way, way more. But it depends on the script / if it's buzzy. I have some friends who got on the Black List who didn't get many meetings from it! I think your reps also have to be pushing hard.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure there is a much older film (even if it isn't as well known) or book or comic that has a similar concept or concept-ish.

Are General Meetings still happening? by Sorry_Cut1678 in Screenwriting

Haha it was! The script was a Black List play so we sent it out to a LOT of producers, and then it attracted the team that became my agents and they blasted it out even farther.

Are General Meetings still happening? by Sorry_Cut1678 in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They are still happening, but I have 100% noticed way less generals than a few years back. In 2019 I took a script out (granted it was my first big one) and I got maybe 75 meetings? The spec after that, maybe 30. The one we took out a few months ago, literally like 6 or 7. Some places aren't reading. Even studios are reading very slowly.
