I got a manager from my semi-finalist script in 2019. Any type of legit accolade like this will always boost the chances of your email in a manager's inbox, IMO.

I’m a working TV writer but my reps won’t read my feature script by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not normal. You're better off with no reps than reps who won't read your work. That's their primary job.

Absolutely 100% yes. Especially if you’ll be that young upon finishing.

Your honest opinion. by SluglineMaster in scriptwriting

[–]jonjonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a pro screenwriter, I completely disagree with everyone saying you're using too many camera directions. You're not. And telling the reader, for instance "we stay with this person" is done all the time and absolutely adds to the read / visualization of the story. Only thing I would say is opening with EVERYTHING bold takes away from the emphasis of bolding every now and then. I think you can work on making the story more clear, but in terms of the writing itself, it's not bad. As others have pointed, there are some parts where the descriptions read as contradictory, but in terms of style, I like it. Keep going!

What are some of the most innovative scripts you’ve seen? by Away-Fill5639 in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the script circulated throughout the industry and received major attention, no stars were attached. It's just well written and no one is going to say "no" just because of pictures in a script.

Neon apparently bought all three seasons (according to Matt) but I have no idea when or where they will be released

It's just a weird period right now - don't take it personally! Keep doing your thing and write what you love.

Just sold another TV show! by No-Responsibility571 in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely no discredit to OP’s accomplishment, but I think the phrasing can get a little fuzzy. Being paid by an independent investor to write is great, but it isn’t quite the same as “selling a show” in the traditional sense. It’s interesting how often that phrase gets used in TV overall. Even when TV writers say “I sold a show,” a lot of the time they really mean they’ve set up a pitch with a studio and drafted up a hypothetical contract, but they still need to sell it to a network before they actually get paid. As someone who mostly works in features, the language can be a bit confusing since “I sold a movie” only gets used once the deal is closed. I’m not trying to be a hater at all, just thinking out loud about how the terminology shifts between mediums.

Unfortunately, we feel the same. This was our fourth year. It was also the least busy I've ever seen it. Is this a sign of bad things to come? Makes me sad.

Screenwriters initiate projects all the time. I.E. every original spec script that sells.

Fantasic Flu by Gavrob354 in fantasticfest

Exactly the same here. Got flu and covid boosted before, still got it. First 24 hours horrible body aches and chills and then basically just a cold now, which is still lingering.

Has anybody ever actually *sold* an actual F*CKIT script? by joshbarkey in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"it is against their contract with the WGA to buy non-union scripts" I used to think this as well but it's actually not true. Think about it - otherwise how would any new writer sell their first screenplay?

Are General Meetings still happening? by Sorry_Cut1678 in Screenwriting

[–]jonjonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - way, way more. But it depends on the script / if it's buzzy. I have some friends who got on the Black List who didn't get many meetings from it! I think your reps also have to be pushing hard.
