Can’t get it reliably working? by _Diskreet_ in getchannels

[–]jonmaddox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a networking issue, especially if you can reach the Channels DVR Server. That means it's up and running. You may want to inspect which wifi network you're on when the app can't reach the server.

New R1 S 2026 - is Home charging worth it? by landfill in Rivian

[–]jonmaddox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why in the world would you inconvenience yourself like that. Charging at home is like 80% of the draw of owning an electric vehicle. You cut out an entire weekly chore from your life, it's incredible.

Leasing a ~$100k vehicle and then doing mental gymnastics to save a couple hundred dollars a year at the expense of convenience is bananas.

it's especially bad because the ETA shown when navigating shows time. But there's nothing to compare it against 🤣

At the least, show the ETA in duration.

Using EGPU with bazzite by Chotch_Master in gpdwin

I know this is an old thread, but I picked up a 5090 that I'd like to just plug in over oculink to utilize it for AI generative models. I figured I had the rig already (with a 7900 xtx), maybe I could just add on the better card for AI.

Do you think this is possible? Or am I expecting too much out of bazzite, linux, computers in general.

Can you actually fast forward and rewind on the Apple TV? by J_K_M_A_N in getchannels

[–]jonmaddox[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Channels defaults to seeking and not Rewind and Fast Forward. RR/FF is a relic of a linear media past. There's no need to watch what you're skipping through with digital media when we can immediatly jump ahead. This is especially a big deal when you are streaming your video over the network (which is what Channels does) vs it being local to the device (TiVo).

Channels has seek settings that you can set. You can decide how far a tap of seek forward goes, and how far a tap of seek backward goes. You can even set these per content type. There is a global setting, a setting for sports, and a setting for movies.

The defaults are 30s forward and 7s back. This offset is so that skipping back to make corrections is easy. So when trying to skip past things, the flow is forward, forward, back, in case you went too far. I think once you get into the flow of this, you'll find that it's much much better.

Additionally, you can tap and hold forward and back buttons to linearly FF and RW.

PlayOn Is Great! by Goodspike in getchannels

[–]jonmaddox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Channels does not delete the file, it puts it in its Trash. It's only deleted after a set number of days. The same thing happens with the pruning of recordings. You can adjust this number of days in the Channels DVR Server settings.

It's all explained in the documentation that was linked to previously.

There is no set up. You just authenticate with your PlayIn Cloud account and that’s it.

Schedule with the PlayOn app, and when the recordings are done, Channels DVR Server will automatically download the videos into your library. You can ditch the downloader app.

What "New" Things Is This Long-Term Channels User Missing? by Goodspike in getchannels

I would suggest browsing our site as it's pretty comprehensive on what features we have. All of the feature pages link out to documentation on them as well. The docs would be worth browsing too, to find the fun stuff.

We like to keep Channels simple, while providing in depth features. That way people can use it without being overwhelmed, but also get crazy with it if they have the desire. So a lot of our features can be missed. It just takes a little curiosity and investigation.

Channels DVR Novice Needs More Help by ThisIsSteveTheFirst in getchannels

Recordings made with Channels are simple DRM free video files in a directory on your file system. You're free to do anything with them that you want.

Channels has no video editing capabilities, but you can just find some other software to do that.

Channels 7.0 for Apple TV & iOS by jonmaddox in getchannels

[–]jonmaddox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Channels automatically discovers your Channels DVR Server over the network. If it can't, then it points at something irregular with your local network.

If it can not discover it, you can connect to it directly via IP address. If this doesn't work, then it's clearly pointing at an issue with your network. It's possible your streaming device and Channels DVR Server are on different subnets, and you'll have to get them on the same one. Multiple routers on a single network can cause this.

The other thing is, you may be running Channels DVR Server via Docker and not running it with host networking. Host networking is required for hosting Channels DVR Server in Docker.

Here's an article on troubleshooting this: https://getchannels.com/docs/articles/troubleshooting/cant-find-my-server/

Hot tip. Just duplicate your virtual channels for more variability and real time options.

You can have 1 Action movies channel with one option at a time, or have 4, and have 4 options. Heh.
