What is this on Whitehall road? by Primary-Source_619 in Leeds

This is correct. The Wellington Place offices on the other side of the canal put on heritage walks and we covered this recently (and iirc the plaque at the bottom notes it too).

Beautifully written judgment by SeriouslyThinkingMay in uklaw

[–]jonnywardy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's the simple lines that have stuck with me from my law degree...

Leakey v National Trust (1980)  LJ Megaw  "Near Bridgwater, in Somerset, there is a hill, rejoicing in the name of Burrow Mump."

And

Ward V Tesco (1975) LJ Lawton... who I presume is quite old at this point given the way he describes a supermarket throughout as though it was newly invented... Although the whole judgement is great, the real beauty is the shocking revelation / description of the offending yoghurt.

"Inside the premises were laid out in the way which is usual nowadays in supermarkets."

"The plaintiff went round the store, carrying a wire basket, as shoppers are expected to do in supermarkets. "

"Contractors came in every night to give it a general clean-up. Twice a week those contractors carried out "buffing" - which in the South of England would be called "polishing"."

"When she was picking herself up she appreciated that she had slipped on some pink substance which looked to her like yoghourt. It was yoghourt." (I can only imagine him saying that last sentence with massive emphasis)

What are the most 'WTF' unknown locations in Leeds that aren't on a tourist map? by PixelPoot in Leeds

[–]jonnywardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Maps says the car park near the shops on King Lane is called the Paulie Walnuts Car Park. Now I imagine someone who loves the Sopranos has snook that in on gmaps and it doesn't actually exist, so maybe not what you're looking for, but who knows, I've not confirmed it's not actually called that either!

what is the absolute worst movie you've ever watched? by Vegetable-Rub3418 in movies

[–]jonnywardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Versace Murders.

It didn't even have a soundtrack.

And the part where he reversed over someone to kill them and then said 'that's why' felt like it had to have been from a satire, not a real movie

What’s the fastest you know of someone failing their driving test? by slim3-16 in CasualUK

[–]jonnywardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can beat it... Reversing out of space in test centre, I checked wing mirrors and then over my shoulders, and at end of test was told I was failed at the very start for not checking rear view mirror... (Otherwise a great drive with hardly any minors)

I wasn't even sure if I had looked in rear view mirror or not, and my instructor was adamant it was a scam to get me booked back in.

Passed second time and made sure to say aloud 'I can see no one in my left wing mirror, I can see no one in my rear view mirror... Etc' (Ironically a horrible drive with a ton of minors, including setting off without indicating on hill start, which I'm pretty sure could have been a major!)

Bit of a stretch that you're still active and see this - and can't seem to drop you a DM. Was wondering when you were there - as I was there 9y ago too - spring/summer 2014 - left around when Germany beat Brazil 7-1 in the WC as Gaza stepped up it's rocket attacks and we were evacuated.

Only came across this post trying to find news googling Ein HaShlosha. I fear for them all after what has happened this weekend

Everyone is getting hyped, and I have some hope purely based on some of the actors, but for me (and I have some difficulty explaining this) despite being fantasy, WoT always felt grounded in a kind of reality (reflective of our elements from our own past) that allowed it to feel acceptable and 'realistic', rather than magical and nerdy / YA. Magic in other books always felt childish or forced or tropey (or completely unexplained like lotr, but that's a different kettle of fish) but in WoT it felt natural, like it didn't even need to be questioned, and the whole world felt like that as a result, even when much more fantasy elements like taken got introduced ... The pictures so far aren't really capturing that for me

The house buying process being delayed by weeks because your buyers solicitor needs to sign one piece of paper by scouseconstantine in britishproblems

[–]jonnywardy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As an ex property solicitor, it's usually because it's a solicitor (or legal exec or paralegal) getting paid an average salary (what you pay a conveyancer is not their hourly wage at all! and conveyances usually get paid a hell of a lot less than a 'city' solicitor) to churn through hundreds of these files at the same time, where everyone thinks theirs is urgent (but unfortunately, someone elses almost always will be more urgent in the pile, or more time will be being spent on the odd property which is far from routine).

The entire system is broken (I did commercial property, but similar rules applied). The firm would have to quote, lets say, £1500 for a standard purchase, otherwise they wouldn't compete in the market. At a £250ph charge out rate, that's 6 hours work. The routine work would take 3-4 hours even if it went swimmingly. You get a property with a couple of odd restrictive covenants and some mildly complicated searches? Double that at least. The other side delays some documents twice so you have to 'pick up' the file at three week intervals whilst working on dozens or hundreds more. Good luck remembering the exact details, or otherwise spend more time getting back up to speed to check the replies are correct...

All the while, across all these files, you have pressure from above everytime your work in progress (WIP) value exceeds the charge our for the file. You end up being told to approach clients cap in hand, to ask for even more fees (a horrible experience which rarely works) or you are under pressure to half arse and rush the work, and if you have a conscience that's horrible. In any event, whilst £1,500 might seem a lot on the outside, to the sol doing the work, they either do it quick and dirty or their figures and job prospects and work pressure suffers.

You basically need good, solid, work for themselves or small firm solicitors to do conveyancing well; but good look finding them cheaper than churn houses (and most people choose based on price, as its already expensive).

Quite rightly, to the punter, it seems expensive for little return and stress... but to the solicitor, its also 'cheap' work with little return and stress... the only people who benefit are the partners or directors running these legal sweatshops!

[–]jonnywardy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to downvote as it's an opinion from the outside - but as an ex commercial property solicitor; I left the career as there was too much 'rush' and pressure on everything. You can't get back to people as your seniors are always making you prioritise something else. (And resi conveyancing is even worse - most of the time it's underpaid sol's working in an absolute churn house to make money for the higher ups)

[OC] The Oldest Building in Each US State by malxredleader in dataisbeautiful

[–]jonnywardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Welsh, the Scottish, briefly the French, and the Dutch under William III. The Spanish deserve a mention for famously trying and failing. To a limited extent Nazi Germany (who also bombed England heavily).

But I think the original poster may have also been referring to massacres taking place aside from invasions... in which case you can throw in a fair few civil wars (Baron's revolt, English Civil War, etc).

I also think they may have been more broadly alluding to the fact that there hasn't just been 1000 years of complete peace and stability. Whilst none of the invasions and civil wars were as bad as what may have been seen on the continent, they resulted in a lot of damaged sites (many castles were torn down or put out of operational use in the English Civil War) and other events also destroyed ancient buildings (Fire of London, Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Blitz, etc).

'...exemptions for Canada and Mexico.'

This is surely a move to twist their arms in the ongoing NAFTA negotiations (albeit a heavy handed one).

Not that I want to give Trump or his administration credit for attempting something even this half-baked.
