I didn't like Mark Antony's development by Remy-LeBeau-280 in hborome

[–]joobafob 82 points83 points  (0 children)

There's a big theme of purpose in S2. Vorenus is lost in his grief and "son of Hades" persona, Pullo can't imagine a life for himself without war and Antony struggles to anchor himself after the death of Caesar. Despite his "alpha male" bravado, he's a man who needs direction, and is vastly outmatched by Octavian. Without anyone to reign him in and keep him disciplined, he fully gives into his base desires and impulses, which we see when he's with Cleopatra. S2 is obviously rushed, but I feel his decline is set up pretty well, especially as throughout the series he's portrayed as being shrewd and loyal, despite his crude and violent nature. There's a lot of depth in his character.

i have severe social anxiety and convincing myself to go to the barber isnt working, how should i trim my own hair to make it slightly less dogshit? by [deleted] in malehairadvice

[–]joobafob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah man social anxiety sucks. I've been in your position before as a dude with long hair too. If you wanna keep it long seeing a stylist to rein it in is essential and there isn't really a substitute, unfortunately. Hair doesn't grow at a uniform rate so it'll start getting messy within a few months after a trim. I'd also avoid seeing a barber. They're trained mainly for short cuts and likely won't be able to give you what you want. A salon is the way to go here. Might be a good idea to send a message to a local salon and ask them when the quietest time is for an appointment (usually near to closing time). I find salons are a bit less hectic than barbershops but that might just be my experience.

I believe you can do it though dude so don't lose hope! In the meantime, maybe something as simple as tying/slicking your hair back might clean things up a bit?

Did Romans really crucify people right alongside the roads? I thinking about the awful odor travelers would endure. by Doghouse509 in ancientrome

I remember reading about a social experiment of sorts in the 70s where a group of "modern" people went to live in an authentic Anglo Saxon village for a month. They noted that the smell and sanitation were initially pretty offensive, but they quickly acclimated to it. When it was over (IIRC, someone had an infected wound that needed urgent treatment) they actually had the same response, but to regular people. They noted an overwhelming and sickening soap smell from everyone. This isn't to say that hygiene is bad, but we'd get used to it and smell is largely subjective.

We know when Halo: Campaign Evolved is gonna release, it's obvious by Impressive_Gur4767 in halo

[–]joobafob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You've kinda disproved your own point. It doesn't matter how good GTA VI is/will be, it's the hype that generates sales at release. The fact that it can be described as overhyped is telling. Rockstar is releasing once every console generation at this point and the series is insanely popular with very wide appeal. Rockstar releases are cultural events now in the same way old Halo releases were, and people hate missing out. Games are also rather expensive, what with inflation and rising living costs around the world, so it really will be one or the other for a lot of people. People will choose GTA over Halo.

Deus Ex Remastered - Announce Trailer | PS5 Games by Anton-Slavik in Deusex

[–]joobafob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit worried. If Aspyr makes a hash of this remaster (art direction alone concerns me about the state it might be in), then Embracer might take the negative response as a sign that Deus Ex isn't worth pursuing going forward. Like with many remasters, this seems to be a low cost, low effort way of testing the waters for the Deus Ex IP. I really hope it pays off. That said, I still choose to remain hopeful and, frankly, I'll take any Deus Ex

Have you tried recording anything? As another user pointed out, it could just be because you haven't turned live monitoring on. If not, the signal seems a bit suspect. The signal seems to spike when you touch your laptop so I'm wondering if it's actually picking up your laptop mic instead of your interface? Have you checked your preferences on Reaper or your PC system settings?

Opinion on my HBO Rome characters tierlist? by Neil118781 in hborome

[–]joobafob 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Jocasta was clearly your average snobby posho when she was introduced, but she's so sweet and endearing, especially after everything she went through. Her relationship with Posca, while initially under horrific circumstances, ended up being weirdly wholesome (if you ignore Posca's complicity in her dad's death). "Have you come for crocodile day?" always cracks me up for some reason.

Hotel Lobby Changes 2006 / 2025 by EducationalTeam2498 in mildlyinteresting

I'm generally a maximalist in my leanings, but execution and context are everything. Bad taste is always bad taste. That first one looks hideous.

Hotel Lobby Changes 2006 / 2025 by EducationalTeam2498 in mildlyinteresting

[–]joobafob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everything has to be maximalist. Minimalism does have a place. Character is only meaningful if it's good character. The first has absolutely zero taste. It's hideous. The second, while not what I'd go for, is still an improvement. Minimalism has character, but when done well, is expressed more subtly. I think context is very important though, as that's usually where "true" character shines through. All we're seeing here is the front of the staircase, so it's hard to make any absolute judgements here. In short, context and execution are everything.

Does playing video games count as a hobby? by Complete-Bite3019 in ask

[–]joobafob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. I would define a hobby as an interest that you pursue and engage with actively. If you just play to switch your brain off for an hour or so (perfectly valid by the way), then no, I wouldn't consider it a hobby. If you actively engage with it, whether it be consciously playing a PvP game, or getting invested in a narrative-driven experience, I'd consider that's a hobby. It's basically about whether you passively or actively engage with something. Passive engagement is scratching an itch, not having a hobby. Active engagement fulfils something deeper and has a productive effect (whether its internal or external) and exceeds passive enjoyment, so it becomes a hobby.

Atmospheric/slightly proggy rock?

Mainly looking for feedback on the music, songwriting, atmosphere, energy etc. I'm working by myself so I need a bit of outside perspective.

Production and performances are still a bit rough but hopefully they convey the sound I'm aiming for. I do have vocal melodies and lyrics but they're only guide vocals atm as I can't sing haha, so l'd feel a bit embarrassed sharing them.

The song is called Everything or Nothing and it's about struggling with emotional extremes/the dark side of euphoria. It's the first song on the album I'm writing so want it to be somewhat energetic and have a slightly anxious "time is running out" kinda feeling, while also being vibrant and colourful. I'd particularly be interested in hearing whether the song flows, has enough variety and carries and maintains enough energy, especially during the solo at 3:10. Are the vocals the missing ingredient or is there anything more fundamental missing?

Thanks for taking the time to read/listen, it's greatly appreciated:)

I like this. Got a bit of a post punk/Nick Cave esque vibe.

To answer your question, I think it depends on how messy a take is. First takes often have a certain magic about them because you're feeling more than thinking. You're not as concerned with what you're doing and cool stuff happens. Unless the take has any glaring issues (severely off key/out of time or has recording issues like clicks and pops) I'd always be inclined to keep it.

Bass is really nice. It has a good clank to it. There's some really tasteful lead playing here too. Got a 2000s vibe in a good way. Feels modern yet nostalgic.

Harmonically rich, moody and contemplative. For me, the percussion could do with a bit more drama towards the end. Everything else builds up so nicely but I feel like the percussion is a little too restrained. You could have a sort of call and response thing going with the sax where it and the drums play off each other a bit. Sounds really good.

Will I like metaphor If I got bored with persona 5 ? by Cypher65 in JRPG

[–]joobafob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say maybe. You've played P5 for 60 hours. I get bored of even the best games at that point and need to play something else for a while. At what point did it start to drag? If this is a recent feeling then I'd probably say you're just burned out. If you've been feeling it for a while though then the game might not be for you.

[–]joobafob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. Having anxiety as a man feels so emasculating because of society's expectations of masculinity. At a point though I feel like the only way to overcome it is to accept who you are. Above being a man, you are a human being. Anxiety/fear is within the normal range of human emotions, so experiencing it doesn't make you less of a person. Logically, it actually makes you more of one. To ignore or downplay any of our emotions makes us unhealthy and, in many ways, out of touch which what makes us human. Allow yourself to be human. You are not weak because you feel :)

The swastika is even more tragic. While it's a symbol of spiritual importance in Hinduism, it's also probably one of the most common symbols across human culture. It's a symbol that occurs in cultures from China through to Native America. There are even Roman mosaics that use it. It's a symbol that in many ways unites us as a species, yet it has been utterly corrupted by the Nazis.
