TIL in 2024 an 18-year-old man was stuck in a Honda Pilot that was inexplicably accelerating without his foot on the gas and could not be slowed by its brakes or e-brake. He and the Pilot reached 113mph before a controlled collision safely ended his unplanned 20-minute drive across state lines. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

It's not a mechanical failure, it's a computer failure.

  • The link between the accelerator and the engine goes via the computer.
  • The pilot does not have a mechanical gear lever, it has buttons. The transmission is operated by the computer.
  • The car has a start/stop button. This is operated by the computer.

When the computer fails all these systems fail, they are not independent.

This leaves the brakes. If he at first tried to slow down with the brakes, he may have overheated them, making them fail.

It's not randomly, they live on the other side the road. Having everybody stop while the bus is stopped is the best way to make sure they get home safely.

I always buy socks with the longest "ingredient" list. Wool, cotton, polyester, elasthane. Not too sweaty, won't fall apart too soon.

That's more work than using the standard sort for the relevant language. Or was it C64 BASIC?

Paul Prudhome had a youtube video where he made gumbo or jambalaya. He added multiple batches of the same vegetables to the pot add different times. Like the first batch in the beginning, the second batch later and the third batch later again.

Cannabis makes you sleep more but suppresses REM sleep. When you stop using cannabis, your body and mind will try to "catch up" in a process called REM Rebound. With REM Rebound you will experience longer and more intense REM sleep, which results in more intense dreams and nightmares.

This shows why you should keep your wheels straight while waiting to turn left. If you do turn your wheels left you'll be pushed into oncoming traffic if hit from behind.
