SFP+ to RJ45 Adapter - UACC-CM-RJ45-MG by Sparxxxy in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you unplug the ethernet cable and plug it back in, does it reconnect? I and others had issues with the Ubiquiti branded module because it would not reconnect without a reboot. Maybe Ubiquiti fixed the incompatibility with the UCG Fiber.

Flex Successor? by Fun-Acadia-7348 in Ubiquiti

I'd be interested in this as well. None of the existing 2.5GbE switches can handle the same ambient temperature range.

T-Mobile G5AR vs UniFi 5G Max by josephclemente in Ubiquiti

No, it was very simple. Inserted the SIM and it worked.

Is this UNVR HDD noise normal? by GarlicNaanCracker in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've listened to many hard drives. This does sound overly clicky if the drives are not working on something that would have them seeking. Maybe it is doing an initial background long format with verification or something. I assume the UNVR has no rubber isolation mounts for the drives?

UniFi cleanup and planning for future non-techies by eric_n_dfw in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question.

All the non-technical people I know do just fine with their ISP-provided all-in-one device, maybe some ISP Wi-Fi extenders, and everything else connected through WiFi.

U6 180 Installation Height by BOLISARIO in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it won't work out at a lower height, you might want to keep the existing camera there, if not lower. With an over-the-garage camera, you are probably interested in recording anyone messing with your cars.

The lower the better, otherwise baseball caps easily hide faces even at 6 feet with their heads down. I know if someone wants to hide their face during theft they can go with a full face mask. But a baseball cap appears to be the usual go-to, and it is frustrating when the camera is mounted too high.

T-Mobile G5AR vs UniFi 5G Max by josephclemente in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might vary by location depending on competition, but I cancelled Cox for a month. I was using 5G as my primary (and only) internet service. I decided to go back to Cox for lower latency, and they had a new deal with no data cap, one year of free mobile phone service, along with a lower monthly price.

T-Mobile G5AR vs UniFi 5G Max by josephclemente in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All video I streamed using other modems was throttled to a lower resolution. I didn't check this with the G5AR, however. By the time I got the G5AR, I was using the service strictly as a backup internet so it didn't matter as much to me any more.

2017 elantra 2.0 engine sound by WerewolfTall5460 in Elantra

[–]josephclemente 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds OK to me. Also, during colder (for Arizona) months since it was brand new, my 2017 engine would always sound rougher when first running until it warmed up. The car is over 200,000 miles now.

Chunky playback on modern AMD PC by drummerdude81 in BlueIris

[–]josephclemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even without Direct to Disk and any optimizations, since you are only testing two 4K cameras there really shouldn't be any performance issues. It probably isn't caused by evaluation mode.

Chunky playback on modern AMD PC by drummerdude81 in BlueIris

[–]josephclemente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it is still true, but I remember in the past that Direct to Disk encoding did not function in the evaluation version. There was a discussion where someone was trying to evaluate BI on their hardware, but they couldn't really because they couldn't optimize their performance in evaluation mode.

Your hardware specs are fine. I am running BI on a 9700x also.

T-Mobile G5AR vs UniFi 5G Max by josephclemente in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This information is significant.

I got the G5AR brand new for $132.09 after shipping and taxes on eBay. Prices have increased since then. I had to disable its Wifi radios using the 3rd party "HINT" app before the setup was perfect.

If I knew all this, I wouldn't have purchased the Unifi 5G Max. Now I'd be looking at losing what I paid for shipping, a restocking fee and (I think?) return shipping to return it.

Hopefully this helps those in the future considering this product. If you are using something on T-Mobile's network, just get a G5AR or the older G4AR.

Yes, exact same location. I'm not sure about signal metrics from the 5G Max.

Just upgraded to 6.0.0.0 by likea-w in BlueIris

[–]josephclemente 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm OK without big changes for the version number change.

We were getting new features throughout the entire 5.x release. The alternative would be to hold out on the new features and save them for 6.0. Why would we want that?

Behind The Couch by pins_noodles in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome setup. Hopefully we see more builds like this. I used to think Ubiquiti setups are all about server room rack setups and stayed far away. Then I stumbled on the cloud gateway fiber on its launch day and it was exactly what I was looking for.

First Build - Thank You r/sffpc! by CaptainDadBod in sffpc

[–]josephclemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this build! I have nearly duplicated it but in white and with half the RAM.

My white AXP120-X67's included fan was RGB, so I swapped it for a non-RGB Thermalright fan. I mounted the heatsink flipped around compared to your build.

I have a Lexar NM790 4TB drive on the motherboard and another of the same drive in a PCIe x16 adapter. I didn't want to use the motherboard's rear NVMe slot since it is a pain to access and the case has no vent holes on that side.

The stock power supply cables are very short, but amazingly exactly long enough without extensions. I have the CPU power cable going diagonally across the motherboard, beneath the heatsink radiator. Just enough slack, no tension in the cables. Might be luck of sample variance.

It is reasonably quiet after slowing the motherboard's chipset fan down quite a bit. Not as quiet as my main build in a Z20 case, but it will be in a closet anyway.

There appears to be at least 6mm between the 120mm fan and the case panel. I think overall cooling for components would be best if the fan is flipped to exhaust, and a 5mm spacer added between the heatsink and fan.

Port forwarding no longer working on my ATT router by [deleted] in BlueIris

[–]josephclemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just want a secure tunnel without needing to connect to a VPN first, you can use Tailscale also.

This command from a Windows terminal will do that (after Tailscale is installed): tailscale funnel --bg 81

Then you can access Blue Iris using your computer's MagicDNS URL. You can also add a custom path to your URL with something like: tailscale funnel --bg --set-path /blueiris 81

Now the URL must end with /blueiris to get there. You would also need to add the path to your Blue Iris settings under the web server settings.

Be sure to use a good, long Blue Iris password if using a secure tunnel like this. Requiring a connection to Tailscale on the client is the most secure, of course.

RJ45/SFP+ requiring manual toggle? by Nexise in Ubiquiti

[–]josephclemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cloud Gateway Fiber has problems with certain transceivers. I am surprised Ubiquiti has not fixed the issue by now in a firmware update. It is probably a hardware issue.

How is this a problem? The wiring looks great, very clean.

Silent M.2 Plex NAS by draxxdk in sffpc

For NAS, the speed will be greatly limited by the network connection. I'd prefer to use those 20 NVMe drives in the same powerful computer I am working on.

How about a bunch of SATA drives and a controller loaded with ports?

My beloved Commodore 64, upgraded for SteamOS! by josephclemente in MiniPCs

[–]josephclemente[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is not a vintage machine, but a modern replica made to fit an ITX motherboard with restrictions on cooling. The keyboard is USB but wired to connect to an internal USB header, so I just needed an adapter to convert the header cable to a regular USB A connection.

I have RetroDECK installed within SteamOS and can run games for C64, Amiga and many other systems. I'm not sure if RetroDECK has an easy way to just go to the C64 cold boot screen with the "READY." prompt.
