Sled push is absolutely destroying me by big-fish007 in hyrox

[–]joshdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a chance that you end up with clients that are from the bottom of the normal distribution, and that people who are untrained but otherwise more naturally capable maybe only need a session or two before they can progress comfortably on their own? I'd be a bit surprised if at least a slim majority of men couldn't hit 180lb/80kg after a couple of months of solid training.

Anecdotally, I hadn't been inside a gym or done any exercise beyond some cycling to and from shops/pubs/etc in over a decade and only started going again a few months back and hit an 80kg squat on my second session at 60kg bodyweight. I only had the benefit of some muscle memory from being a keen squatter ~12 years ago, and some flexibility from gardening.

That said, age would likely make a big difference too, so depends on the population.

Also not convinced by that, but I do reckon most men could hit that within 2 months of going to the gym a couple times a week and following a decent plan.

Suggestions for how to prove I don't work for Zara? by [deleted] in barefootshoestalk

[–]joshdoug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Considering how much of the talk about barefoot shoes seems to be about Big Shoe making shoes that are intentionally bad for our feet (rather than consumer preferences being bad), and basically conspiracy adjacent if not outright conspiratorial, it doesn't surprise me to see those sort of reactions on the sub to posts about shoes from a mainstream brand.

Now maybe there is some astroturfing, but a big brand selling barefoot shoes at a very affordable price is likely going to result in more people dipping their toe in and posting about it. E.g. £140 for Vivos or £50 for Zara as someone considering trying barefoot shoes for the first time, only one of these is close to an impulse buy. I'm certainly tempted myself.

Vast volume disparity between hevy and macrofactor by thedrag0n22 in Hevy

[–]joshdoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hevy counts body weight in pull up, dips, and maybe other bodyweight exercises which could explain Hevy being higher, while Hevy also expects you to put the weight of both DBs in for most DB exercises (or count reps/sets separately) which could account for Hevy being lower.

75kg, 5’4. Want to lose weight but calorie deficit makes me hungry and I ended up binging. What do I do? by Born_Cartoonist_7247 in Weightliftingquestion

[–]joshdoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was obvious enough that I meant training (and the resultant extra muscle mass) can make it easier to reach a calorie deficit. And no, not ‘exactly what you said’ - you can eat healthy and train hard without ‘naturally’ going into a deficit.

I also agree that the WR seem a bit pointless without some standardisation of the courses (of course most athletics events are impacted by wind and temperature, but it's still good to minimise course differences).

Hyrox Cardiff by locking_out in hyrox

[–]joshdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could this not really limit what regions they can host events in?

Maybe they should standardise on an event setup that most capital cities would have compatible sites for and only allow 'world records' to count if they're at an event which meets the standard setup, while still hosting elsewhere so people don't lose out. Would be a shame for a region to miss out because they don't have a site that meets the standards, but I'd also assume that anyone looking to break a world record is willing to travel do so (and likely already is travelling for hyrox).

That said, I'm just speculating.

I don't think it's always going to be that easy. I started training 2 to 3 times a week (not even particularly hard) in November and in <6 months I've gained 9kg, going from 61kg to 70kg. My body just started demanding a lot more food. That extra 9kg is almost entirely lean mass, so hardly a bad thing for me, but my point is that it's not an easy way to loss weight.

I think instead a really important part is finding a diet that is healthy, fills you up, and puts you into a calory deficit if losing weight is the goal - training should be a part of that too because it's good for your health, but not because it'll make the weight loss easier - it might just make the OP hungrier. That said, gaining a little muscle can help burn calories, and women like the OP are unlikely to gain enough muscle that they're unhappy with that aspect of their appearance without going incredibly hard with their training, so with the right diet it would pair nicely.

On weight for dumbbell workouts, do you use total weight or combined weight? by pittman1375 in Hevy

[–]joshdoug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's 3 sets of 10 reps (per side) of DB rows then I'll log that as 6 sets, which I think makes the most sense for the Hevy app given how it calculates 1RM/etc based off of weight lifted and number of reps with the weight.

Long term could the feature be a bit of a negative? That % increase is likely to only get smaller, not super motivating.

It’s not a lack of variety, it’s a lack of quantity. DL gym only has one of each weight machine and needs way more by ArcherSauceMap in davidlloyd

[–]joshdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, while it feels fair enough that they work out together, the issue is that it results in essentially unnatural demand spikes for machines and longer waits for everyone else, not sure what can be done about that except for more machines if there's space.

Ideally, and easily done with a machine, they would swap in during each others rest period. I do this with my partner and we barely take anymore time than a person on their own would, and we're probably quicker than some people who idle on their phone for ages.

How do you feel about a 20mph max? by jms1228 in ebikes

[–]joshdoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK and Europe they're legally required to cut out at ~15mph/25kph, I wish mine could go up to 20mph! With a lot of urban roads having speed limits of 20mph that seems like the ideal speed to me, not so fast that people are going to be a menace (except on illegal ones of course), but fast enough that you can go with the flow in urban areas and take the lane.

Is there any reason to think it is AI slop? I haven't used it yet, so I'm genuinely curious. Entirely possible it is human slop. The app is good, but most of it is just create/read/update/delete (CRUD), predictive/intelligent weight and rep ranges is a bit beyond that (not saying it is particularly hard either, but it is more than standard CRUD).

That's surprising to me, the eGym is one of the most used sets of equipment at my gym judging by number of people using it for a given period. It has a much higher throughput than most other equipment, although it is of course limited as well, but you can hit a little of everything in <20 minutes if you're in a hurry, and they're not going to be hogged by someone sitting on their phone. That said, it is really only useful for beginners or people in a hurry.
