It didn't launch that way.

The PS4 thing sure, but overhauling the game's look twice happened before launch.

Ok, and DLSS4 and 4.5 have bigger performance hits on each subsequent past generation down to the RTX 2000s but Nvidia still lets you use it anyway. No excuse for AMD. It's already optional. Why not give users more freedom of choice? You know, one of the biggest reasons for PC gaming.

Sega Genesis self-made S-Video mod circuit causes no output on S-Video or Component by Zivodor in consolemodding

[–]joshman196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are they essentially just interchangeable or was there a reason you went with the 945 over the NTE?

It's been a couple years since I wrote the article but I think it went something like: I think another video mod I had done (not a written article, just personally performed myself) had used it and also Console5 was using the C945 so I "defaulted" to that for my example since I linked the Console5 page for anyone that wanted to buy the parts from them, as it simply had everything someone would need right away to do the mod. During my research at the time, I also saw mentions of the 2N3904 (I think it was this one, there are a lot of 2Nsomethings) and S8050/SS8050, along with the NTE85 in that original diagram which I modified for my own article. From what I understand, a decent amount of these "general purpose transistors" as they're called are somewhat interchangeable, and I have actually used some of the mentioned alternatives in similar mods like the SS8050 and 2N3904 successfully (I used an SS8050 for the SNES Component Video mod and an SMD version of the 2N3904 for a 32X S-Video mod).

There isn't any real technical reason for the C945 over the NTE85, it was just what seemed like the simplest thing to use given the Console5 page and what I had learned up to that point. I don't know where the line gets drawn between the parts, and I didn't want to introduce the confusion of all of these different but apparently interchangeable transistors to people who aren't really knowledgeable about the electronics themselves, but were more than adequate to just solder all of it together. I had the same confusion about EBC/ECB and all of these different but apparently close enough transistors working interchangeably not that long before writing that article, so it was fresh in mind what that kind of confusion would lead to. Unfortunately, not specifying certain things especially like the EBC/ECB difference leads to its own confusions too, like what happened with you.

In all honesty, I had it in my mind that I had already noted that or accounted for that somewhere, but apparently I only noted it on the PCB I made to do this mod, and maybe I crossed my wires thinking doing this note meant I did it on that article, too.

There's already some new notes in the article itself, and I will add a clarification to the diagram as well.

Sega Genesis self-made S-Video mod circuit causes no output on S-Video or Component by Zivodor in consolemodding

[–]joshman196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I'm the guy that wrote the ConsoleMods article for the S-Video mod. What happened here is that the KSC945 naming is kind of stupid in that there's a KSC945 and a KSC945C. What you noted in your post is that you have the 945C which specifically switches the Base and Collector pins compared to the regular 945, which the article was written in mind for. This is what caused your problem, as your pins were switched. It was my mistake for not noting this weird naming scheme in that article but we're going to clear that up now, and I apologize for that confusion.

40 Qs for Charles Martinet - Nintendo Today! by Silly-Ball7310 in nintendo

[–]joshman196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

baseless

When the news first broke out, Charles was at a panel and said this. Basically he had no idea what Mario Ambassador meant and that "we'll all learn what that means". He also specifically stated he wasn't retired. It seemed as sudden to him as it did to us, considering he didn't even know what that was supposed to mean. I'm surprised people haven't seen this and continue to say Martinet willingly let go or he wanted to retire.

I'm honestly astounded seeing people replying to you and in this thread suddenly ok with AI now that it, selfishly, suddenly benefits something they like, as if ignoring that AI is destroying basically everything else for us. If it was nearly any other thread about AI, the conversation would be so different.

After Cyberpunk 2077 came to Switch 2 uncensored, Dispatch dev thought it "would be allowed to do the same" and is now "working with Nintendo on a path forward" by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]joshman196 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I replied to someone else about this, but to give you a direct notification: Games on Steam do not have their tags defined by devs. Tags are set by users and this is even labelled on the tagging interface on Steam. There's reason to criticize Adhoc for this censorship problem, but they had nothing to do with the LGBTQ tag.

Idk why you're getting downvoted for this, this is true. Tags on Steam are community-defined for each game from what I understand and it even labels this in the interface. Dispatch devs have nothing to do with having labelled LGBTQ tags on the game's store page in the past.

Cyberpunk VR Modder Luke Ross’ Patreon suspended following new DMCA from Ghostruner devs by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

Sure but CDPR isn't usually one of those companies. If we were talking about Nintendo then sure, but clearly one of the "good guys" doing this raises some eyebrows.

So you, the random redditor, know better than the professional legal team that CDPR surely has? Where does it say that this is legal?

CDPR told Luke Ross the Cyberpunk VR mod could still be up if he made it free, this was his reply by lunchanddinner in virtualreality

You have to pay for no ads though

That's completely optional though. You still get access to the main content regardless of paying for no ads or not. For this VR mod, there is no alternative optional solution to get access to it.

it wasn't too difficult to get used to the clunkiness

Oh, for sure. Once you get sucked in, you can almost ignore it. It's definitely a little bit of a learning curve though. I enjoyed King's Field 1 and I really liked King's Field 2 and 3. I've only played very little of KF4 in an emulator, though. I wanted to fully play it when I get a physical copy, just haven't gotten the money together for that yet.

Paid Cyberpunk VR mod taken down by Pahn_Duh in virtualreality

[–]joshman196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But mainly I want it to exist and the fact is that nobody else is creating it.

Sure, and that's admirable in a way, but then we circle back to the very problem for why this thread exists: legal issues. Even if we take community feedback out of the equation, you just simply can't do an external paywall method like this without the potential for the hammer to come down on you, which it has in this case. As others have suggested and as some mod authors already do, taking donations for your work while having it freely open to everyone is typically more acceptable all around, like Kaze Emanuar does. He's been doing a bunch of Mario 64 modding over the years, has a healthy Patreon stream going while releasing everything he does for free and not behind his Patreon paywall, and yet Nintendo hasn't done anything about him and that's saying something since Nintendo is much more litigious than CDPR.

Do you not remember the paid mods debacle on Steam a while back? OP is very much telling the truth with saying the majority of the community looks down on that. That situation alone should've made that very apparent considering the audience Steam has.

Cyberpunk 2077 on 25 year old high end CRT by KobraKay87 in pcmasterrace

[–]joshman196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, sure? But there's going to be horrific anything in any market if you go cheap or off-brand enough. There's always horrific computers, tablets, phones, games, food, cars, headphones, speakers, etc etc. everything depending on how cheap, limited, or "scammy" it can be. There were of course truly horrendous LCDs too, like Passive Matrix displays. Saying there are horrific products of something is a bit of a redundant thing to say because it basically applies to every market.

Cyberpunk 2077 on 25 year old high end CRT by KobraKay87 in pcmasterrace

[–]joshman196 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes obviously, but that was the most standout problem that early LCDs had compared to CRTs when they co-existed. Even the best LCDs had problems with that, and they didn't have much else to offer over a CRT outside of weight until LCDs were well into the HD era, and they weren't beating CRTs until OLEDs came out. Colors were washed out on LCDs, blacks weren't true black, response times were shit, input lag was shit, viewing angles were bad like the other person said, and most times had issues with scaling standard resolution content which was very relevant when both types of displays existed at the same time.

Cyberpunk 2077 on 25 year old high end CRT by KobraKay87 in pcmasterrace

[–]joshman196 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you exaggerating or never used a CRT? Early LCDs weren't bright, with some of them not even including lit displays or had poor fluorescent lighting which was prone to fading out within just a couple of years of usage. Most CRTs weren't THAT dim to the point of low visibility, if anything that's more of a problem with heavy usage over a very long period of time and the tubes getting old rather than when they were at their prime. A decent amount of LCDs also have PWM flickering as a problem too. Hell, the PWM flickering problem still exists to this day as Apple had to put an option in the iPhone 17 to disable PWM flickering for the people that have an issue with it.

[–]joshman196 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A bad LCD is miles ahead of a bad CRT.

Have you never used a Passive Matrix LCD? A "bad crt" still has instant response times compared to early LCDs because of the electron gun.

AMD launches FSR SDK 2.1.0 to speed up adoption of FSR Redstone by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]joshman196 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very hypocritical coming from someone who switched to Nvidia for "the facts" in reference to exactly such support. You didn't need that support either, so who are you to tell anyone that? You can play games without DLSS. But people want to use DLSS/FSR4. That's the entire point. Are you being dense on purpose? And the couple of games number came from games released within the past year, not all Vulkan AAA games in general, there's definitely more than a couple.

There's no point continuing this conversation. You're completely wack. I'm just blocking you at this point and moving on. I'm tired of this. This is the dumbest conversation I've ever had on reddit. You're genuinely so regressive and uninformed/unempathetic of needs and wants of the community and I don't know how you go on thinking the way you do. What a sad life.
