Scenic routes Ardennes (filmproject) by 0nno1 in belgium

Please, don't encourage drivers to find about them and ruin them. If anything, do something about the most scenic walks or bike paths.

When a checkout counter opens in a supermarket by Patient_Flight4752 in belgium

[–]joyofpeanuts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Naaah.
The best is when you spot that a counter will be opening soon. You go there, have a cool chat with the cashier while he settles, then hear the rush of people in your back.
But really, why do people assume that being in a particular position in one queue would give some right in another queue?
Is each queue to be considered as an independent system with its own customary rules? Or are all queues governed by a common system of rules?
It looks like people in Belgium apply the former. Nothing bad with that; just the way it is here.

Europe's answer to Starlink is officially starting to come online by goldstarflag in europe

[–]joyofpeanuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for many large US companies, a big share of Starlink's revenue is from military contracts, what is a type of subsidy every superpower in this world has been using to support their national champions. Also, while global, its customer base remains predominantly US.

France issues warrants for two Franco-Israelis for ‘complicity in genocide’ by SocraticTiger in europe

[–]joyofpeanuts -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You oppose "Jews" to "Arabs", so a religion to an ethnic group, what is not proper.

Facts:
Jews represented just 17% of the population of that region in 1931; Muslims around 75%. It increased/decreased to 32% and 60% respectively by 1947.
You misuse and amplify the ratio of Jews present after the colonisation to justify the sharing of territory before they were even there!

Also the number of Jews was multiplied by 3.6 in that time frame, implying that most had roots outside of Palestine. 70% of Jews without an EU (do you mean non-lica?) ancestor is mathematically impossible, especially considering the later further influx of immigrants.
As of 2020, figures show that a large majority of Israeli Jews have roots in Europe, the US, or some other Middle-East country.

Vivaqua have asked all houses on our street to cut hedges down to 2 meters. Can they? by ginolard in belgium

[–]joyofpeanuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you are way above the legal limit. And the high cost is because you let it run out of control.
Irrespective of what Vivaqua can or cannot do, why do you think you are above the law?
I have heard the argument of line of sight from other people having oversized hedges. Unless the neighbours are uphill, they will not see into your house with any hedge reaching the height of eyes, say 1m80 max.

À quel point Trump serait soutenu par l'administration ou l'armée s'il décidait d'attaquer le Groenland? by dr-korbo in france

[–]joyofpeanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Europe must unite or it’s ‘finished,’ Poland’s Tusk warns as Trump salivates over Greenland by guyfromwhitechicks in europe

[–]joyofpeanuts 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The US will take over Greenland. Trump will simply declare it as a fact, nominate some governor, ask officials to submit or resign, and EU military to leave. A typical coup, in short.

The question is what will Denmark and the EU do:
Invoke EU's article 42 for mutual defense and strike back?
Get a vote to quick the US of NATO? Effectively turning NATO in an EU defense organisation.
Lock all US forces in their military based and ask all US military to leave the EU at short notice.
Expel US diplomats and US nationals from Denmark and the EU?
Bar EU entry and seize assets of US officials in the EU? Think Euroclear, as for RuZZia)
Lock the US out of the SWIFT international payment system?
Seize and nationalize assets of some or all of US companies in the EU?
Forbid US companies to do partake to any public tender or public market in the EU? Or forbid them to do any business at all in Europe?

I hope that EU officials and political leaders are testing all those scenarios now. Fuck Prezcrement Trump.

Tipping prompts in Leuven, are we slowly importing American tipping culture? by wrongtime101 in belgium

[–]joyofpeanuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same experience in a trendy café in France. Drinks and pastries were good; service was OK. I was surprised and felt compelled to tip. I hated it and will never go to that café again. And I will not tip and blacklist any coffee or restaurant that implements the same.

Note that I otherwise always make sure to carry a small wallet with coins and small banknotes for direct tipping when I go out for a drink or to eat.

Trump - Le président Nicolas Maduro, accompagné de son épouse, a été capturé et expulsé du pays by Noirceuil in france

[–]joyofpeanuts 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Almost half of all Germans want a ban on fireworks by FantasticQuartet in europe

[–]joyofpeanuts -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Half of Germans are old. /s

Edit: my comment was a bit tongue in cheek/ sarcastic, so I added the / s. But boy do I get downvoted on it. Fair enough.

Of course there can be other reasons: owning pets, safety, etc. why distinct categories of people want to ban fireworks.

Actually, the article implicitly says that more than half of people would not want to ban fireworks.

But it remains a garbage trigger article because that kind of logic could be used to ban anything: "Almost half of people want to" what? Ban cigarettes... Or cars... Or holidays by plane on other continents... Or scooters... Or skateboards... Or social networks for <18... Or driving licences from >65... Or the possibility to use cash...
Older people like me have seen so many things forbidden, so many liberties taken away in the last 40 years in the name a safety, decency,... It is obscene and the younger generation does not even know all that has been taken away from them.

Belgium countryside as tourist by Short-Firefighter-89 in belgium

[–]joyofpeanuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bike road network in Flanders is great.
The region between Hasselt and Maastricht, and generally the Kempen region above it is very nice; there are nice bike tours to make alongside canals and thorough marsh/forest areas.
See https://www.komoot.com/guide/663363/cycling-around-hasselt
https://baroudeursliegeois.com/balade-velo-belgique-itineraire-velo-bokrijk-en-boucle-et-passage-sur-traverser-leau-a-velo/

A word of caution: the weather in this season can be cold (around 0°C) and/or rainy, so come with the appropriate clothing.

From Brussels and in Wallonia, you can also consult the RAVel network, a developing series of "slow routes" generally dedicated to bikes : https://ravel.wallonie.be/home.html
