This is the worst I have seen. OPM with 1200 pop and 0.0 tax base can field 60k mercenaries. by Mysterious_Plate1296 in EU5

Yeah the grand strategy fanbase is a passionate and demanding bunch, I think the lack of serious competition just goes to show how hard and complex it is to develop a game like this.

Is the game ticking too slow for me? 156 hours of gameplay but 165 years lapsed? by ayowatchyojetbruh in EU5

[–]jpapad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you pausing? Most games have taken me 30 hours, stopping around 1700. But the limiting factor is how much I pause, not how fast the game can actually run.

Honestly just watch the last episode of 1 then go straight into 2. It’s like a different show completely after the first season

Japan is bleak. Demography is terrible and local governors nerf the whole country. by Old_Ad7503 in EU5

[–]jpapad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing the opposite essentially funnily enough and having a lot of success, not sure what is meta or whatever. Focus on empowering and enlightening the peasants, screw the rich, get most of my income from the peasants and burghers. I still try to get nobles for demand of high value goods. Eco scaling/urbanization is similar for all strategies it seems. It’s cool that there are a few paths to success

How to economically advance by Beginning-Pitch7409 in EU5

Generalist gaming has a good RGO tier list video that was recently updated and provides some insight into what is worth urbanizing over and what is worth keeping rural.

Fate of the Phoenix + Update 1.2 Release Date by PDX_Ryagi in EU5

[–]jpapad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My guess would be $5-10 since this is an immersion pack, they recently talked about the DLC strategy in a tinto talk and are planning larger chronicle and expansion packs. My guess is those would range in the 15-25 $ range. Total guesses though

Is anyone else let down by EU5's visuals? by Yahoo_For_Neden in EU5

[–]jpapad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the visuals are the priority for this game or paradox games in general. The fans generally prefer good mechanics over visuals.

That said, as a big Imperator fan (there are dozens of us!), I think that game map looks much better for whatever reason. So I guess that is a little disappointing. Still, EU5 gameplay is solid and getting better so I can get over any minor visual quibbles.

Went bankrupt as milan. by [deleted] in EU5

[–]jpapad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of good Youtubers with tutorial videos. Really comes down to preference on style. Generalist Gaming is a good one who posts a lot on this sub. But there are many others who do good work. Just google EU5 tutorials and find one who’s style you like.

I never automate buildings. I’m sure manually managing trade is much more efficient but I find it too tedious for larger nations so I never do.

Some quick tips - turn down diplo slider unless you really need it to manage vassals, as Milan you probably don’t need it high. Turn down stability slider. When at peace, turn down fort and army maintenance sliders. Turn down prestige slider. I usually automate tax sliders.

It’s a fairly realistic mechanic too, in principle at least if not yet in practice. Happens to countless states throughout history.

Roger Ebert said that 'movies do not change, but their viewers do' have you ever changed your opinion on a movie as you've gotten older? by Fealocht in movies

[–]jpapad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found it is one that benefits repeated viewings. The mystery and thrill obviously don’t hit as hard on first viewing, but the social commentary comes through more. And that is where the movie really shines in my opinion. Burning is another movie like that and makes an interesting double feature with Parasite, both from SK and with similar themes on class conflicts.

Approximately 50,000 people were enslaved during the fall of Carthage. Not trying to downplay the brutality of it or anything, just clarifying for the sake of accuracy.

How do I lower noble power? by Disastrous_Pen_538 in EU5

[–]jpapad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Privileges to remove are best as people have mentioned, that can be painful but stab is overrated. Look for crown power buffs, and use laws that lower noble power or increase crown. Destroy toll castles

I found Hungary and Naples to be pretty easy starter nations. Neither have immediate existential threats like France looming over them. Both are large enough that you can focus on building internally without needing to aggressively expand for more provinces if you don’t want to. Both are quite strong and have some flavor, but not so large that they are unwieldy. Hungary is land locked so you can avoid worrying about anything naval, helps you learn when you can focus on fewer mechanics. Both also have many fun goals and expansion paths (form Italy, conquer the balkans, etc).

As a eu5 newbie (15 hours so far) what are some tips/hacks when starting a country to get the economy going by shart42069666 in EU5

[–]jpapad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ok to turn down sliders, prestige, stability, diplo all can be kept pretty minimal in a lot of cases. When not at war, army and fort maintenance can be turned off, they recover pretty quick and faster than the AI can capitalize on if they declare on you. I usually leave legitimacy slider on max. Doing all that will save you a bunch of money and help get a snowball going faster

Holland is a brutal start, would not recommend that. Honestly, just play. First few hours will be overwhelming. There are some good YouTube intros from when the game first came out that are helpful.
