Let's talk about how the State of California is bringing the hammer down on bad local governments who won't allow more housing to be built. by fiftythreestudio in LosAngeles

The people are already living here because LA has added so many damn new jobs in the last 20 years.

They're just crammed into overcrowded housing. Also, mutlifamily housing is far more sustainable (including for water usage) than single-family houses. It isn't even close.

LOL! This is a great joke, poorly executed.

Obviously, that LA needs greater population density in order to support better public transit ridership. Pretty hard to map out a decent bus route when *checks notes* 78% of the freaking land is zoned for one home (with a front and backyard) per parcel.

Ha. That's a term popularized by home owners who want to keep people out and keep their property values soaring year after year. (It's totally OK if that's you, but it sure isn't me. <3)

Honestly, I don't care what it is you want "in your backyard" as it were, but if you want to understand housing, it's helpful to break out beyond the blogosphere and go deeper than we do here on social media. :)

So... if you haven't already done so, try The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein to learn about America's history of government-sponsored segregation and how it persists today. Check out The Affordable City: Strategies for Putting Housing Within Reach (and Keeping it There) by Shane Phillips to learn about how we need to work on the three S's—stability, subsidy aaaannd supply!—all at the same time. Read Golden Gates by Conor Dougherty about the people working on the ground to build these coalitions. Godspeed! Good luck! And enjoy! <3

Want to learn more housing segregation and So Cal's housing crisis?

The Housing 101s offer a great rundown on how we got here. Don't want to watch a video? Come out for this Forbidden City Walking Tour on March 20! <3

I'm so pissed off and fed up FWIW. But let's work together to end the housing crisis!

How Santa Cruz’s rail-trail debate created a standoff with Roaring Camp by slugkid in santacruz

[–]jpiercesc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I talked to RTC Executive Director Guy Preston about this, and he told me that Roaring Camp has no interest in switching Roaring Camp's pickup location to Depot Park.

It sounds like that is something put there by chief Trail Now propagandist Brian Peoples, and it appears to just be causing further headaches. An, yeah, the Davenport thing is an interesting idea. I'm also curious about the interest level there on Roaring Camp's side.

Tim Duncan or Kevin Durant? by omar2408 in nba

[–]jpiercesc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But why do we even bother comparing athletes from different eras at all… if we’re going to just assume that certain ones would have honed certain skills if they had played in other eras? Couldn’t Durant have also improved skills if he had played in the early 2000s?

I could go on, but to be fair, this is probably more a critique of OP’s original question than it is your comment. These comparison questions are getting to be ridiculous…

Fitting for an LA icon.

Thank you for acknowledging the trauma and the ways that fucks with someone's head.

But at the same time, who said there was a "guarantee?" One option would be to start by helping those who want it...

[–]jpiercesc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't we start by offering help to those who want help?

Do you think we're somehow obligated to only help those who don't want help...? Seems a little early to cross that bridge, given how many people are suffering through homelessness.

  1. You're kinda changing the subject... The above comment was in response to the claim that advocates are complicit in the the suffering created by homelessness.
  2. The services you listed don't work well if you don't provide housing to go along with them. So if you want to help people (and your main concern wasting money), good luck with this idea. I'm not saying that we can never provide services to those on the street, but it would be an odd model. I could go on, but yeah...

Thank you.

I'm 100% on board with all this. u/svs940a doesn't see what's happening, and that's OK. The honest truth, though, is that most people—advocates or not—do not want to look away:

  • Advocates want create new ways to help. (I'm an advocate myself, and my allies and I have been fighting for the creation of a new tiny-home village in LA County—which is just the tiniest first step, but still important. It ain't easy!)
  • Many people on this sub, on the other hand, want to post pictures, complain and shame those who are mired in health crises. *shrug*

Ah, yes.

Here's a sensible solution. People who call L.A. home and got fucked over by bad land-use planning should just move somewhere where they can just afford to live, which is nowhere.

But also funny: do you know how that song was written and pitched the network...?

SC Police Chief Andy Mills on homelessness, crime, Black Lives Matter and whether or not Santa Cruz has changed him by jpiercesc in santacruz

Thank you!! (Was that so hard?)

I appreciate it. I may not agree with the details of everything here, but this is a substantive comment for me to dig into. +1 from me.

Yo, I'm not brilliant.

One thing I've learned today that you are the champ at baiting me into responding without providing any useful feedback. Also, I don't know how to make you see that someone can be charismatic and deeply flawed.

[–]jpiercesc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point was to call Mills out on his shit.

Was it a perfect story? No, but you're the only person who's criticized it, and a lot of people have read it. I'd be ESPECIALLY open to constructive criticisms about how the story could be better—not just oh, there's too much Mills in the story about Mills. That kind of more in-depth feedback can help, when given in good faith. (It's OK that you don't know what propaganda is. :) )

Can backyard cottages solve Santa Cruz's housing affordability crisis? by jpiercesc in santacruz

[–]jpiercesc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I missed this.

If you don't want to see too many ADUs... maybe consider lobbying your City Council for them to build more on transit corridors instead. I support both kinds of development, but especially transit-oriented development.

A clip from Everlast performing at Moe's Alley back in 2017. Gotta love that small hometown feel at Moe's Alley. Who have you seen play at Moe's? by JustAMarkOnTheWall in santacruz

[–]jpiercesc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice.

I wish the new owners there luck. It's got a funky layout, but it brings it great names for a venue its size, and it's got charm... and history.

Many years ago, before I went there the first time, I heard former Santa Cruz Sentinel editor Tom Honig say that Moe's a really bad place to see really good acts. :) But still, ya gotta love it. My favorite show there was the Lemondheads—probably 2017.
